Last week my #VIC20, my first computer and still one of my favourite retrocomputers fell on the floor from a shelf. The 40-year old ABS case is brittle and broke right on top of the user and cassette ports. The Run Stop key also fell off 😩 #retrocomputing #repair #thread #commodore

The keyboard with the missing key, the Run Stop.
The key with the broken plunger in my hand.

Fortunately, I could find the broken pieces (only two big chunks, plus a small one) and glue them back in place. I'm happy as the repair is barely visible. I used in the past cyanoacrylate glue for ABS with good results, it seems to work quite well in this repair, too. #VIC20 #retrocomputing

@davbucci@mastodon.sdf.org avatar

I'm now using my #3Dprinter to obtain a compatible plunger for the broken key. I tried to glue it back but the repair was not strong enough as one piece of the puzzle was lost.

davbucci,
@davbucci@mastodon.sdf.org avatar

After a few failed attempts, this printed plunger seems to fit OK. The repair is almost unnoticeable from above 😊 #VIC20 #retrocomputing

If you are interested in the 3D model of the plunger, I found it on Thingiverse and the original authors did a great job: https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:3208313 I had to file a little the portion that fits into the key, so maybe this would have been a better alternative for the #VIC20: https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:2453924

The box hinges broke many years ago. I tried to repair them 7 years ago but they broke again. I decided to print a replacement to glue in place. It seems to work well. I will see how it will stand the test of time. #vic20 #retrocomputing The case is yellowed, but it is bearable and I think I will not retrobright it again.

Two clips aligned to hold together the VIC20 case. A third one is also present on the right but it is not visible in the picture.

Smoke test: passed! 😊 The keyboard works again and especially the Run Stop key that broke.

A BASIC program stopped correctly.

BTW, if you are interested, here is the Thingiverse page about those clips to #3Dprint #VIC20: https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:2984324/files #retrocomputing

I updated the page on my website about the restoration of my I wrote in 2017. It allowed me also to provide a feedback of the Retrobright process that I tried 7 years ago: http://davbucci.chez-alice.fr/index.php?argument=varie/vic20restoration/vic20.inc&language=English#update2024

I decided to release the full source code of The Queen's Footsteps as open source: https://github.com/DarwinNE/The-Queen-s-Footsteps/ If you want to test it, you should probably start by cloning AWS2C, as TQF expects to be a subdirectory of it.

Another on the bench. This time is the nice Dual 1218 my parents bought in 1974 along with a Marantz amplifier.

davbucci,
@davbucci@mastodon.sdf.org avatar

This type of is fully automatic. It's nice to use, but harder to service. Now I have to find 5 quite different lubricants to grease/lube specific points of the turntable 😳 Fortunately it is a well-known deal with Dual turntable and many resources exist. BTW I just ordered an Audio Technica ATVM95E cart at the place of the DN211 that was originally there.

davbucci,
@davbucci@mastodon.sdf.org avatar

I inspected the 1218 mechanism and I cleaned it. There are signs of wear in the large gear that controls the automatic mechanism. I wonder if it can be fixed or polished before I will receive the correct grease for it.

I cleaned and regreased the Dual 1218 . After a little fight with the infamous “steuerpimpel” I was able to make the turntable mechanism work again. I love it! Now I only need to work on the damper, put the new cartridge, set it up properly and job done!

@janbeta maybe you would like this thread as you like repairing vintage HI-FI equipment.

The Dual 1218 contains a disk changer mechanism. My parents never used it, but it is nice to see it works perfectly.

I noticed that it is very easy to connect the to my analog as it provides 1V/oct and gate signals. I love using the arpeggiator 😍 @synthdiy

I'm working on a large-scale for and with soloists.

What should I listen to for inspiration?

Any time period, any style -- I'm interested in seeing different ways of combining these forces, and studying the nuts and bolts of .

If you're a , director, or who has wrestled with this, what would you say are the key do's and don'ts of writing for this combination?

@composers @classicalmusic

davbucci,
@davbucci@mastodon.sdf.org avatar

@mcmullin @composers @classicalmusic Probably you already know them well, but I may suggest the large Bach's compositions for choir and orchestra (the passions, the mass in b minor, Christmas' oratorio, etc.). Haendel's Dixit Dominus. On a different period: Dvorak's Stabat Mater, Brahms' Requiem. On another completely different style and very surprising, Stravinsky's Les Noces (but not a full orchestra: 4 pianos and percussions). Hope it helps!

davbucci,
@davbucci@mastodon.sdf.org avatar

@gordonkerry @mcmullin @composers @classicalmusic I could sing both Brahms' Requiem and Beethoven Ninth symphony (last movement of course) as a chorus tenor and I can confirm. I recall the 9th as probably the more demanding vocally. Once the director repeated the whole movement for an encore and it was though managing their vocal resources so to be able to speak the next day. But this is why vocal technique exists, after all. It was an amazing experience, I utterly loved both pieces!

davbucci,
@davbucci@mastodon.sdf.org avatar

@gordonkerry @mcmullin @composers @classicalmusic On a completely different register, may I add Arvo Pärt's Salve Regina to the list? The version with the celesta and the string orchestra is very nice.

Happy new year! I was considering adding a new module to my soon. A VU meter with a magic eye tube as inspired by @polykit is an obvious candidate 😊 On the musical side, the synth sports two VCO's, a VCA+ADSR, a VCF and a VCLFO. All is controlled by a MIDI2CV module, plus an output mixer in a box that used to contain fine wine. What would you recommend? I was suggested a second VCA+ADSR. I was also considering a noise gen+sample and hold. @synthdiy

@kbob @polykit @synthdiy Thank you! I'm hesitating between another ADSR and a noise source (white + pink).
