Currently using Nextcloud AIO and it’s pretty decent, though I’ve got 16 vCPU and 32 GB of RAM allocated to it right now, though it’s only using 10% CPU and ~7 GB of RAM at the moment.

I think it takes a while to warm up once you start adding data to it, especially depending on the plug-ins you add and amount of data.

I’ve seen that around, but I prefer to run my own services instead of relying on a ready-built system like that. I find they don’t offer that much customization options usually.

Yeah, that’s the pain point - building and maintaining the charts.

Also, I know the charts likely wouldn’t have to be super complex, but I’m used to working with Bitnami’s charts that are massively complex - I just don’t have the time to go that in-depth.

jax,
@jax@lemmy.cloudhub.social avatar

Oh, I know I could get them to run with enough work. I just don’t have that much time to spend on initial implementation and upkeep of the charts.

I’m using FluxCD, which I believe can do deployments of plain Kubernetes manifests, but that still requires a decent amount of overhead to keep up to date.

I think I’m going to end up using docker-mailserver for this.

That seems really resource heavy. 4 Gb of RAM for an SMTP relay?

Other than that it looks pretty great.

I can’t do latte art, I call mine “the blob” or “polarbear in a snowstorm” lol

jax,
@jax@lemmy.cloudhub.social avatar

Oh, that is pretty cool! Custom post types does seem like an interesting solution to some problems I've seen with i.e. Mastodon

jax,
@jax@lemmy.cloudhub.social avatar

Yeah, I'd love to setup a /kbin instance at some point, it seems pretty nice.

Yeah... I'm not good at naming things lol

Some people are reporting outbound networking issues/DNS resolution in the lemmy matrix chat, I wonder if you're hitting the same thing. Do you see anything about DNS resolution errors in the logs when trying to search for other communities?

jax,
@jax@lemmy.cloudhub.social avatar

I mostly didn't touch that part, it seemed to be outside the scope of the article and suggesting a config for each person's exact setup isn't going to be possible.

This would be for putting in front of the nginx proxy built into the compose file. In theory you could do SSL offloading here or whatever you want, as long as you don't change the headers needed by the nginx.conf file further up the page.

@jax@lemmy.cloudhub.social avatar

Ah, so it seems like once you've setup an instance at a domain, you've kinda burned that domain unless you use like a subdomain. That's a bit annoying, but I guess it makes sense.

jax,
@jax@lemmy.cloudhub.social avatar

Ah, so similar to the issues with finding content on a single user Mastodon instance :(

I think the biggest leap forward for the Fediverse would be making content more discoverable. Just not sure how that would be done.

The other problem for a single user instance would be that anything you post is basically shouting into the void unless people follow you. At least with Lemmy you can post to other instances/communities.

Does it make sense to host your own Pixelfed instance (like I’m doing with Mastodon and Lemmy currently)? I occasionally do some photography and having a place to post my images to replace my current site would be nice.

jax,
@jax@lemmy.cloudhub.social avatar

That’s true, it has been pretty seamless. Though, for example, my instance doesn’t seem to have any of the comments from this thread, and I’m not really sure why…

I might have spoken too soon, checking again and I can see them now. Also, interestingly, my mastodon account is following my Lemmy account and also able to see my main post plus the comments/responses, which is pretty slick.

jax,
@jax@lemmy.cloudhub.social avatar

Ah okay, that’s not terrible, but would make a large instance going away a bit of a pain. At least the data’s not gone.

jax,
@jax@lemmy.cloudhub.social avatar

Yeah, I haven't had too many major issues with Lemmy or Mastodon now that you mention it. Lemmy's install docs are... messy, but once running it's been without issue. Hats off to the devs for that.

We’ll see I guess, I hope it doesn’t turn out like the TouchBar on older MBP models or the Apple Watch (mostly just for notifications and fitness)

jax,
@jax@lemmy.cloudhub.social avatar

Yeah, I haven't been able to justify their laptops lately. I had/have a 2016 MBP 15" that I gave to my dad last year since it was a bit slow for what I was doing, and since working from home I wasn't using it much. Would be nice to get either a desktop or laptop (or for them to release more desktop apps for iPadOS).

jax,
@jax@lemmy.cloudhub.social avatar

Those are good points. I think we’ll see others start to succeed more once the hardware price comes down. Apple has a habit of driving component prices down due to the shear scale of manufacturing they require.

jax,
@jax@lemmy.cloudhub.social avatar

Yeah, the only thing I can think of that would be worth using is for doing work and throwing up web browsers and IDEs and logs without being confined to a screen.

If it can do that well, I’d be interested.

anders, to lemmy

Lemmy is booming

I have never before received so many reactions and comments on my Lemmy posts before, so it's obvious to see, that there are many new members here.
Welcome to all the new! And I'm looking forward to see more of you here.
Cheers!

jax,

That’s actually kinda a really nice feature of federation. Each instance kinda becomes its own image/video host (assuming your software supports it). Just have to actually use that data in the frontend…

They recommend the Ansible setup found here: https://github.com/LemmyNet/lemmy-ansible

Their main docs site does have instructions for running via docker(-compose), but they seem to be pretty broken right now.

I'm running Lemmy and Authentik (authentication broker for my Mastodon instance) on one of the $14/month AMD premium droplets and it's working fine. (1vCPU 2Gb RAM). Though I'm the only user currently and my instance has only been up for about an hour lol.
