Once again the Linux elitist and reply guys rear their ugly head to show that this particular penguin shaped leopard cannot change its spots. 😔

@kev

Surprising at first... but also not surprising when I remember the dynamics of the public Internet.

It's sad that so many good voices that ought to be heard, remain quiet and retreat into the shelter of the "dark forest" because of mass responses like this, while the loud-mouths and stirrers proliferate.

@kev
This one stood out...
"I understand that some people are still living in serfdom, but I cannot stop repeating that it is much better to be free. (And whenever I am fixing my mum's Windows, she is 86, I just cannot believe what some people pay their money for)"
I'm amazed this person can be bothered to fix his ageing serf of a mother's broken Windows. Why not just shout at her for being "a slave" and force her to learn to use a nix terminal to set her free.

@kev Tech “bros” that hide behind the screen can be real dicks. It’s actually a reason why I’m very careful about Mastodon in general because they all seem to be in this space, with nothing better to do. Of course… it’s way more complicated than that and don’t want to single out just Mastodon. Also passive aggressive I can’t stand at all. It’s a shame. People are diverse and like different things. End of story… unless you’re “that” person 🤷‍♂️

kev,
@kev@fosstodon.org avatar

@vincentritter I think you’re right on with the Mastodon thing, Vincent. Truth be told, if I wasn’t the admin of a fairly large instance, I’d have probably abandoned the fedi a while ago for this exact reason.

Like with most online services though, Masto can be amazing as well, which is what keeps me around. :)

velten_dev,

@kev I have thoughts, a lot of them which gave me the idea for a blog post. For this moment I'll just summarize my reaction here.

  1. Ruben's instance is a BSD focused instance. By it's nature it's going to attract a lot of FOSS die-hards. There certainly is an echo chamber effect and going against the echo causes strife since...
  2. Some people pin their identity to a cult and any opinion against the cult is an attack on them.

This is sad, but not necessarily unexpected.

kev,
@kev@fosstodon.org avatar

@velten_dev it's definitely not unexpected, and also very sad. Most of the replies (that I saw) were not from Ruben's instance, FWIW.

@kev holy shit! 😱

shom,
@shom@fosstodon.org avatar

@kev it's sad to see people being unkind and confounding to see them act against their own stated interests by acting as gate keepers instead of ambassadors. Thanks for posting and supporting rational voices.

tylnesh,
@tylnesh@fosstodon.org avatar

@kev sorry, but this reads like an attempt at creating drama. The replies you included are quite harmless and far from anything I’d paint as elitist. I could write a dozen articles on how Mac or Windows people are elitist. Try looking for Linux-related bugs on Steam forums.

It’s not a problem anyway. People have opinions on things they use. What’s the point of getting obsessed on what a random stranger writes underneath your post? When you post publicly, you invite discussion. So act like it.

joel,
@joel@fosstodon.org avatar

@tylnesh @kev this would be fair if it wasn't because people got obsessed at what a random stranger shared on their post.

hundreds of boosts and many comments (many of which were removed) is simply annoying.

Now, you might say "if you are afraid just don't post it publicly" and fair enough, but its still annoying

tylnesh,
@tylnesh@fosstodon.org avatar

@joel @kev the thing is, I’m starting to feel like whenever people are confronted with opinions outside their bubble, they feel threatened and attacked over any small disagreement. When all the comments under a post are agreeing with the OP and providing no new point of view, then the discussion is pointless. It’s starting to feel like LinkedIn, where everybody is always excited and patting themselves on their shoulders. I’d rather have an internet where people disagree with each other politely.

joel,
@joel@fosstodon.org avatar

@tylnesh yeah but this wasn't about differing opinions or anything.

Clearly Ruben already knows all the things that were said, the very same things he criticizes are the things he gets as answers. It's just an infinite loop of the same problem as always.

Windows has to be used by people, and there's people who maybe like to use it, and they don't wanna change it, and that's fineee

    @kev Jesus Christ, the things people will write, because someone dares to use different OS than them.

    @dzajew I know. It's ridiculous.

    @edboythinks I think a lot of these people think of themselves as edgelords, so if the masses were to descend upon *nix they'd lose their shit as the "normies" had arrived.

    How ironic...

    MurrayWindripper,
    @MurrayWindripper@fosstodon.org avatar

    @kev
    I think that's why some people are sniffy about Ubuntu... It's popularity means there's too many of us who blunder around with only a faint clue of what we're doing.
    @edboythinks

    jbaty,
    @jbaty@social.lol avatar

    @kev It's so disheartening. Those responses are from a contingent that can put one off the whole community.

    kev,
    @kev@fosstodon.org avatar

    @jbaty exactly. I wonder how many people have thought about a switch to Ubuntu, nosed at some forums, sub-reddits etc. and thought "screw that..." and gone back to Windows.

    brunomiguel,
    @brunomiguel@masto.pt avatar

    @kev I could almost bet that some of those replies came from the "I use Arch BTW" and the "FOSS purity test" crowds . Disclaimer: I also use Arch, but I'm not that kind of moron (all other kinds of moron I am, at least in the eyes of someone, but not that kind).

    kev,
    @kev@fosstodon.org avatar

    @brunomiguel I'd be willing to bet the vast majority came from those 2 camps.
