I am feverish in bed post-vaccine, please tell me a cool fact about something

jeffcliff,

> You don't know which direction any address is so you need a table holding every allocation and the next best hop for it.

at one point everyone on the internet had a table of domain names, stored locally, too

we solved that problem

such tables are a stopgap, a stopgap that survived because the internet isn't big enough to justify building something to replace it

spanning trees are part of the way out, but the full way out hasn't been fully hashed out yet

jeffcliff,

> How do you route traffic without something having a full routing table?

depends what kind of traffic in terms of how it has to be handled imho.

Bloom filters can do a lot of heavy lifting that they aren't, currently- ie there's probablistic middle ground between 'broadcasting everything everywhere all the time' and where we are right now

generally: handshakes between different parts of the network to re-define spanning trees that are triggered by unusual traffic is likely too imho

jeffcliff,

> except we'd never allow this because the global routing tables would be so huge and inefficient.

this sounds like a cop-out

some inefficiency is to be expected, but globally the only reason that you'd need such tables is if there was no redundancy, which to describe the interplanetary internet less and less with time

There's a million children in gaza.

There's enough water in the area for about 600,000 people.

This means, in the last decade, gaza has gone from 'a little over capacity compared to their long-term water supply' to 'COMPLETELY FUCKED" because they couldn't keep their dicks in their pants.

Part of the problem is they are trying to outbreed the jews, and aren't willing to sterilize their women (due, in part, to islam)

just not with fatah

jeffcliff,

c'mon now we both know the real "terrorists" here are bibi and

jeffcliff,

the current situation is beyond fucked and there is no answer to questions like that

ie hamas is going to benefit from it, that's all there is to it

jeffcliff,

> my interpretation of the situation is that israel wants to eliminate hamas entirely.

realistically, they also want to eliminate fatah

jeffcliff,

sure there is

  • russia/china/israel is pointing nuclear weapons at them
  • covid is running rampant
  • global warming is continuing to worsen
  • the US has been drawing on unrenewable sources for a bunch of inputs, such as water, en masse for a long time and isn't ready for what happens when that water runs out.

Gtmlosangeles, to actuallyautistic

The term “self-diagnosed” developed wide acceptance and use prior to my realization that I am autistic. I honor and value the history of my communities of autistics by understanding the meaning being communicated by that term. I do not try to change anyone’s use of that term, but I do not use it myself. I share this here in case others have similar ideas or want to discuss.

I strongly believe that no one is entitled to know any diagnosis of another. That information can be shared freely by the person diagnosed but should never be required. This goes for autism, mental health conditions, pregnancy, HIV infection, and even COVID infection.

Diagnoses are tied to medical, psychiatric, and educational institutions that perpetuate racism, homophobia, transphobia, ableism, classism, eugenics, and more. The existence of well-meaning professionals and the benefits of sharing commonly understood categorizations do not eliminate the danger that can be associated with knowledge if diagnoses. Thus, every individual should have full control over who has access to that knowledge, in order to maintain agency over their own lives.

It is my best guess that I would meet the current diagnostic criteria for ASD. If I were to say that I am self-diagnosed, that would be what I mean. But I do not say that. Now that I understand what autism is, I do not care whether I meet the criteria for ASD. I simply communicate that I am autistic. How others interpret that communication is up to them.

that's great until we need to do public health statistics to understand what a disease is doing to the public

If you think that Google or Microsoft are Evil Corporations, you haven't really seen Evil.

Meet Larry Ellison, who is almost 80 and somehow still alive. Larry heads Oracle Corporation since founding it. Every single product that Oracle has ever bought was either killed or turned to shit.

Oracle bought MySQL (mostly to kill it), which in turn resulted in MariaDB fork. In 2023, I can say I haven't seen MySQL/MariaDB used for quite a while for anything except PixelFed (for some reason) and Amarok (yes, the music player).
Oracle bought Sun Microsystems and KILLED EVERYTHING SUN HAD EVER MADE WITH FIRE with the sole exception of Java. SPARC? Dead. Solaris? On life support. In fact, Solaris was open source/free software/whatever you wish to call it before the acquisition. After the acquisition, no Solaris code was ever published again.

Let's talk about the main product of Oracle Corporation, the Oracle Database Management System. Did you know that Oracle explicitly prohibits publishing any benchmark results without prior approval? That's right, if you own a licensed copy of Oracle DBMS, you can't tell anyone how good it is. Because if you do, your license will likely be revoked and you might even get a fat lawsuit. So far, this is the one of the two databases I know of with the license having this clause. IBM has a similar thing in their DB2, but only to an extent. IBM DB2 license requires that all published benchmarks must provide full information for reproducing the results, including hardware specs, OS settings, et cetera. MSSQL is the other DBMS with a license clause prohibiting sharing benchmark results without their prior approval, but this is Microsoft we're talking about.

The feud between benchmarks and Oracle goes back to the early 80s. In 1983, Dr. David DeWitt benchmarked Oracle DBMS and published results, which made Larry furious. To the extent that Larry wanted DeWitt fired from the university where he worked. Rumour has it, for years after that DeWitt couldn't land jobs because many companies were afraid to lose Oracle licenses for hiring him. Imagine being that petty.

Anyhow, I'm glad Oracle doesn't own any product I use or I am forced to use. I hope Oracle dies from cancer filled with cancer, yes, the entire company. They deserve it.

jeffcliff,

Oracle is a good example of what a proprietary software world looks like

Think about what a strong bond you would share with your wife by the time she is 18 if you had met her when she was 9 and gave her 300 orgasms every year. All that dopamine during her most impressionable years was meant for her to fall deeply in love with you so that she wouldn't drop you the moment you stop being a good provider. All those steamy nights with her were meant for you to fall deeply in love with her so that you would love her after her beauty fades.

All taken away from you.

seriously why the fuck are people still getting boosters
didn't they pretty much admit that shit did nothing

jeffcliff,

We are now years into vaccine escape.

This isn't 2021, and the variants of covid that are circulating are mostly not the same.

They were effective. But that effectiveness drops every month that we allow millions of people to get covid. We shouldn't need to update the boosters, but thanks to those who have been out getting and spreading covid, we do.

We should be thankful that covid doesn't mutate more rapidly
( outside of with Molnupiravir )

jeffcliff,
