@aleksi @paavokassi @menneisyytesi Up there Tampereen Kebab Pizzeria Snupi:n kanssa.

jhilden,
@jhilden@vis.social avatar

@ilkkajii @piiabartos Itsellä sarjakuvat ehkä vähän liian alhaalla, hmm. Kieltämättä Fletcher Hanks, Cowboy Henk ja Pirisen jutut olisi enemmän ylähyllykamaa kuten myös Woodringin Frank.

6-vuotias on kiinnostunut Aku Ankoista. 10v. piirtää itse sarjakuvia, mutta jostain ihmeen syystä ei niitä lue.

Kirjoja lukee nyt enemmän ja jopa mielellään, voittivat luokalla jonkun lukuhaasteen.

May have mentioned this, but goodness, read_html is such a saver. Any properly formatted table from a webpage directly into usable tabular data, without copypasting into Excel or Numbers (as yours truly used to).

E.g. to get the formatted timezonedb table:

pd.read_html('[https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_tz_database_time_zones](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_tz_database_time_zones)')[0]

Not sure, but feels like one thing about genes that is generally not popular knowledge is that it is all about interacting chemical gradients over time. So uhh if trying an analogy here… more like building sounds with a synth than blueprints of a building. Maybe someone actually expert in this has a better popularization? #genetics #biology

”What signals guide segment formation? The process begins with the gradients of messenger RNA (mRNA) that the mother deposited in her egg before it was fertilized. Shortly after fertilization, these are translated into their proteins with a gradient of bicoid diminishing from anterior to posterior and a gradient of nanos diminishing from posterior to anterior.”

I haven’t read it, but I dare recommend it based on having followed Ball’s writing over the years.

Started reading Solaris to the 10yo. Wonder if it was a mistake?

It is a while since I read it, don’t remember how bad it gets in the specifics… might also just be too obstruse.

jhilden,
@jhilden@vis.social avatar

We got finished with Captain Nemo and she asked if there are some other classics in the shelf. Happened to have Solaris in Swedish.

I don’t really know what this looks like but the type sure doesn’t look 1956. Pretty cool.

"Here’s where it gets interesting — GCJ-02 is based on WGS-84, but with a deliberate obfuscation algorithm applied to it. The effect of this is that there are random offsets added to both latitude and longitude, ranging from as little as 50m to as much as 500m
(...)
it’s against the law in China to convert GCJ-02 (obfuscated coordinates) into WGS-84"

@Saint_loup @MoritzBrouhaha This is very interesting. Wonder what the situation with is? Seems like it would depend – some coordinates that are accurate, because they are based on satellite images, but others that are offset, if the person placing an amenity happens to have obfuscated position information.

jhilden,
@jhilden@vis.social avatar

@Saint_loup @MoritzBrouhaha Someone did a visualization of the GCJ-02 distortion

https://github.com/leifgehrmann/gcj02-distortion-map

jhilden,
@jhilden@vis.social avatar

@Saint_loup @MoritzBrouhaha According to Wikipedia OSM is mostly accurate?
”Satellite imagery and user-contributed street map data sets, such as those from OpenStreetMap also display correctly because they have been collected using GPS devices (albeit technically illegally – see Legislation).”

jhilden, to ebikes
@jhilden@vis.social avatar

Right, wrong or ”it depends”?

From the perspective of a non-technical user, an e-bike that is built and designed to use a motor will generally be superior to a regular bike turned into an e-bike with a conversion set.

At least in Finland conversion sets are fairly rare. Arguably there are obvious issues with the vendor lock-in that major brands like Bosch push on their users, but the reliability is okay and there are certified maintenance shops. #ebikes

jhilden,
@jhilden@vis.social avatar

By ”non-technical” I’m here thinking of someone who rather leaves anything more advanced than fixing a flat or changing brake pads to the bike shop.

We got a cool new bike tunnel in #Helsinki, just did a test ride! A huge improvement, replaces a very fraught and annoying route in front of the railway station.

Article in Finnish, but includes video.

@kowry Saatat muuten ehkä kiinnostua tästä leftfield soca -soittolistasta jonka väsäsin joskus kun olin yrittänyt perehtyä genreeseen. Spotify, mutta luultavasti kappaleet löytyy myös muualla
