The Gates belt drive is a fantastic invention, but I sure wish someone would make at least a partial enclosure for it.

Literally the only thing that breaks these is gravel, so would make a lot of sense to at least have the option of, like, just maybe… stopping gravel getting in the drive?

Learned today about the VSCode integration for Adobe scripting.

It is actually pretty nifty, and better than the sunsetted ExtendScript toolkit that I always found to be fairly terrible.

Still missing Scriptographer though!

Again stuff that makes you go 2010s indie album art or 1920s children’s book?

Also, a sad story. Some would have it that people are ”overly sensitive” these days with regard to mental health, and yet, how things were dealt with back then…

Vietnamese ”Bird’s Nest, White Fungus” soft drink, gifted to me by a friend. Contains homeopathic amounts of bird’s nest (1.2mg/l).
Tastes sweet and like… basically the dusty and not necessarily unpleasant smell of an old attic in a wooden house. Not sure what the cloudy chunks are, but I assume them to be the fungus (20.9g/l).
Overall impression 2/5, ok to try once, would not buy.

Wait what:
”However, limblessness has been suggested (Bjork, 1975) for at least one fossil mammal, the extinct hedgehog Proterix. No complete skeleton is known, so we cannot be certain, but Proterix has very peculiar vertebrae, with lengthened lumbars flanked by lateral plates. Bjork saw resemblances to whales and hypothesized that Proterix may have been fossorial and used a similar mode of locomotion as amphisbaenians (a group of legless lizards).”

On the topic of differences in discourse, here’s a very interesting paper on regional variation in climate change attitudes in Germany.

The authors note, that previously similar research has been done only in the US and that there are many reasons to assume that the findings there may not be widely representative. E.g. the two-party system uniquely collapses topics along the partisan divide.

The current covid discourse in the US vs. e.g. Europe is a curious thing. Concerning the updated CDC isolation rules, I checked, and several countries are less strict about isolation recommendations. E.g. Denmark, Finland, Italy. Yet I don’t see much debate around that. Arguably these countries have better support for calling in sick. New Zealand (unsurprisingly) remains strict. Also, it doesn’t seem that just-in-case self-testing is done much or expected at least in Finland.

First time 9yo told about a meme I had never heard of:
Smurf Cat. There is no substance to it,
apparently it is an image originally created in 2014, now trending on TikTok,
”…almost always paired with the Alan Walker song “The Spectre”, particularly with the lyrics: “We live. We Love. We Lie.””
Aoomer memes…

When constructing alt texts with lists, avoid en dashes and slashes, instead use a semicolon or a comma (tested on macOS):

"Käsikirjoitusapuraha; Scriptwriting grant: 3,5 %"
(good, is read with a pause)

"Käsikirjoitusapuraha / Scriptwriting grant: 3,5 %"
(terrible, slash is read out, merged with the following letter "slash S")

NB: you can actually mix English and Finnish, if the reader language is Finnish. It will just result in Rally English :D

Older kid wondering about epicanthic folds, I tell her how they are more common in some populations.

She notes that the classmates that have folds have East Asian roots. I say to look if someone else has them too, since it is not that rare in Finland (both my kids have them, curiously I don’t, and neither does their mother, but her sister has).

Will have to discuss it more with her, because a google search turns up a worrying amount of references to ”normal eyes” and plastic surgery… 😞

But please don’t confuse Album-oriented rock with with Adult-oriented rock.

Cool that Adobe includes the different regional versions of their applications in the Creative Cloud subscription, but they should really do something about the ridiculously unintuitive management. I want to see which versions I have installed WITHOUT switching language settings, damn it.
