Tried to send a message to the IETF's mailing list with some feedback from @feditest. Tried three different sender e-mail addresses. None of them went through. Not sure what else to try.

jimfenton,
@jimfenton@mastodon.social avatar

@J12t First try sending a message to webfinger-join@ietf.org to subscribe and then try sending to the list. IETF just changed its list management tools so maybe it forgot you.

jimfenton,
@jimfenton@mastodon.social avatar

@J12t One of the area directors recently posted that she plans to close the webfinger list in a few weeks due to inactivity. https://mailarchive.ietf.org/arch/browse/webfinger/

@J12t It might also help to create an account at https://datatracker.ietf.org. Let me know if you continue to have problems and I’ll escalate it to the tools team.

Status: "broadband" connection is smoking.

I put "broadband" in quotes because in the middle of this technology desert called Silicon Valley, I have a choice of exactly two broadband providers, and the one that has the less-horrible privacy policy has date rates that were last acceptable maybe last century.

jimfenton,
@jimfenton@mastodon.social avatar

@J12t @jamesmarshall Service to our house is underground and there’s a string they can use to pull additional cables. I imagine they do the same elsewhere.

Apple telling employees in San Diego that the only way they could keep their jobs was to move to Austin was tantamount to firing most of them, and disgusting beyond measure, especially for female employees for whom moving to Austin could potentially be a death sentence in a complicated pregnancy under horrific Texas laws.

jimfenton,
@jimfenton@mastodon.social avatar

@lauren Requiring employees to transfer to some other city used to be routine: remember when IBM was called "Ive Been Moved"? But the situation in Texas is horrific. Short-sided of Apple to build an expansive campus there, except maybe that decision was made well before current political situation.

Seriously: who decides what "best practice(s)" is/are for incident response? And how is that determination made?

A law professor reportedly informed a student news outlet it was “best practice” to limit information about a breach claimed by threat actors until there was information on the full scope of the breach and the network was secure.

“Institutions do not want to get into a drip situation where they notify people of a breach, then later learn the breach was worse than understood, and then have to give more and more notices,” he wrote.

So "best practice" is defined as what is most convenient or in the entity's best interests instead of in the best interests of those whose data were stolen? I can understand the wanting to secure the network part, but it is not acceptable in the World According to Dissent to delay disclosure of a breach until you know the full scope if data are already being leaked on the internet or appear to be at plausible risk of imminent misuse.

Calling delays like this "best practices" seems to confer some legitimacy on delays that I don't think are all legitimate reasons.

(Wanders off in search of coffee..)

@campuscodi @amvinfe @brett @douglevin @PogoWasRight @funnymonkey Calling something a “best practice” is often just a way to assert something without having to justify it. “Why do I have to change my password every 3 months? A: It’s a ‘best practice.’”

    The most confident statement from the Apple Event I heard that won't come true was "AirPlay for Hotels". Imagine every hotel chain you stay in soon will let you play your music and video on their TVs, effectively helping their PPV revenue go to zero.

    I'm sure hotels are clamoring for that!

    (Google pushed for "Cast to a TV" support a few years ago that maybe I got to work once or twice ever, but now doesn't seem to exist in any Marriott or Hilton places I stay)

    jimfenton,
    @jimfenton@mastodon.social avatar

    @mathowie I can HDMI connect to the TVs at most hotels, so they aren’t getting any revenue from me anyway. The bigger question is how much more internet bandwidth they’d need if more guests were doing this or AirPlay.

    Lots of noisy supersonic planes in the air in the bay area. That is very unusual. What is going on?
