This wasn't my first concern about Replika harming people, but... I guess "encouraging teenagers to assassinate UK royalty" is gonna need to get both added into the bingo card, and immediately punched.
@feoh@spacewizard I want to draw attention to the fact that I specifically referred to
"people who want it to just talk to them, without weirdness" as the segment that got screwed over by its aggressive horniness!
I do not and would not call those people "losers." Although Replika certainly is forcing losses onto them. 😢
Well everyone, it's the first week in July, and #Reddit CEO Steve Huffman is still a lying asshat who treats Redditors as voiceless resources to exploit. So, as promised, I'm off Reddit and out of r/zfs for good.
The good news is, Practical ZFS is up and running as a replacement, with more than 100 registrations in its first day online and more continuing to come in. I hope to see you there soon!
@mcdanlj that is pretty exciting! I'd love to be part of the fediverse eventually. I looked VERY hard at Lemmy/kbin/etc, but reluctantly came to the conclusion that they weren't quite ready yet.
@jimsalter I can't figure out how to say this on social media he participates in without being That Guy, and I think you're likely already aware, but Allan's wrong about Proxmox wanting the VM to be local to its disk.
#Proxmox lets you define storage pools from whatever source you like. I run all my VMs off of my NAS except for a couple of perf intensive cases where I use the local disk and utilize Proxmox's automatic backup if the VM's use case merits it.
@feoh yeah, I'm aware. Not sure whether it just didn't seem like the most important point to push back at on air, or whether I did say something and it got eaten in editing (which definitely happens, frequently for my own good 🙃) or what. In particular, I've seen a lot of proxmox+TrueNAS stories!
Don't worry about being That Guy. We're sysadmins, aren't we?
Community Members and Community Supporters wanted!
I've set up a new home for OpenZFS community news, discussion, and education at https://discourse.practicalzfs.com/ and although it's still new and ugly, it's ready for folks to start kicking the tires.
Patreon supporters can log in to the Discourse using Patreon auth, and get Supporter flair and access to the Supporter's Lounge. Also, you can help patch the hole in my wallet! =)
The app rebuild stuff takes for bloody ever, but so far the actual platform seems pretty snappy. Hopefully it'll still seem that way once traffic ramps up 🙃
@feoh would you mind logging into the Discourse with your Patreon account? I'd like to make sure the automatic stuff works right, and so far I've got several supporters but none seem to have logged into the Discourse using their Patreon. :)
@jimsalter and a gaggle of others have been saying this for years, but it's still super interesting to see an actual analysis of how GOOG is making independent email as close to impossible as it can manage:
@feoh the rate limiting and similar pointless delays drive me insane. That's one of the reasons I do still run my own mailserver: it's a gigantic pain in the ass, but when someone sends me email I know if it didn't get here that the problem isn't on my end. Similarly, when I send email and somebody doesn't get it, I know that it wasn't a problem on my end--because I can see what happened to it in the logs.
Meanwhile, Microsoft is even still emitting BACKSCATTER, the chumps. 😡
Here's an early #ff for you all :) If you're technical and self identify as "sysadmin" even just a little bit, you should be following @jimsalter - He wrote for @arstechnica for quite a while and now drops science on us all every week on the @25admins podcast. I have learned a TON about #ZFS and *NIX in general from him through the years and prize his advice rather highly.
Except for his dislike of #ProxMox which I personally think is a pretty great way to herd VMs for non production use :)
@feoh@arstechnica@25admins I'd probably be one of the Proxmox herd if I hadn't already been doing most of what they do before they started doing it. :)
@feoh oh, you'd better believe I can kick them from my phone. I just use an SSH app and the terminal to do it. virsh shutdown $vm ; virsh start $vm and Bob's your uncle!
