Space — in a two-bedroom apartment, at least — is finite, and shelf space even more so. Author Lewis Buzbee writes about the difficulty of getting rid of books, keeping what is only essential. "I don’t get rid of them, per se; rather, I set them afloat, in search of new homes," he says. What's your philosophy on keeping, or liberating, your library?

yzh,

@CultureDesk I try to hold onto favorites, reference books, and books I haven't gotten around to yet. The lie I tell myself is that one day I'll get to them. Consequently, there are many books I have yet to get to 😅

So why is English-only? Simple: the admins only speak one language.So other languages are "a problem".

FFS, get off that instance, it's fediblock-fodder. Fascist instances should be defederated.

Exchange between @mairin and the admin, @kev: "@kev @victorvicpal This is an issue of humannes. A person's language is a core piece of their identity. @mairin so. Leave. Then. FFS. @vistorvicpal"

yzh,
@yzh@fosstodon.org avatar

@acousticmirror I'm on fosstodon, but I don't really have any attachment apart from that. I'm wondering if this is just an overreaction to admins honestly having to deal with the very real problem of moderating content on a popular site. Or am I being naive believing that argument from them? I just really don't feel like migrating again...

Got home after being out of town and promptly fried my backup hard drive by accidentally plugging it back into the wrong power source. The plug area of the enclosure smells like burned rubber. Hopeful that it's just the enclosure and I can open it up and save the actual hard drive.

@hybridhavoc My current favorites are ReadEra https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.readera and Librera https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.foobnix.pdf.reader.

Librera can use ODPS libraries and is also available on F-Droid.

Both apps offer a paid "pro" version with more features.

yzh,
@yzh@fosstodon.org avatar

@sekenre @chrisjrob I'm not an expert at all in how the Perl interpreter works, but I do work with Perl a lot. I think the sigils are what makes what's going on in code like that pretty much unambiguous. One of the reasons I like Perl, and the use of sigils, a lot.

I think if you understand enough Perl, and how the sigils change to indicate the type of data, you'll think it's pretty straightforward.

The word for 'knife' in some languages. Interestingly, the Germanic word appears in Catalan, from Germanic languages of the early middle ages (Frankish?) - and has at some point been loaned into Basque as well.

I was watching "The Subtle Knife" when I made this - obviously, the name of "Mrs. Coulter" was no coincidence.

Cue puns about Latvian knives now.

yzh,
@yzh@fosstodon.org avatar

@oysteib Fascinating, thanks for that! I just spent far longer than I should have going down this rabbit hole with very much amateur linguist skills. It's interesting that the original author outright dismisses the possible Latin origin of "falx", and there's no explanation offered in the excerpt. My guess is that the word most likely originated from the same place the word for axe in Spanish "hacha" came from and settled in Portuguese as "faca".

yzh,
@yzh@fosstodon.org avatar

@oysteib of course, I'm basing that on a combined total of about 3 hours of Googling...
