I see a bunch of people are demanding a "pause" in AI development and deployment

Ethically speaking, not wrong

But that assumes the people running the firms developing these tools have any notion of what's right and wrong, and understand the dangers of what they're doing

My impression is they don't, and political decision makers are too weak and in thrall to Silicon Valley

So chances a pause happens? Close to zero, I'd wager

OK, so I have a spare few hours during a trip to Barcelona 1 June (am giving a speech on 2 June)

I have heard there are some old Renfe Talgo night trains parked up and rusting on the north edge of Barcelona - I think that must be about here https://www.google.de/maps/place/41%C2%B026'31.5%22N+2%C2%B011'45.8%22E/@41.442078,2.1953914,260m/data=!3m2!1e3!4b1!4m4!3m3!8m2!3d41.442078!4d2.196054

And it looks like (within the general rules of course not flying over roads, live railways etc.) that drone flying there ought to be possible...

Can anyone confirm that is indeed where these trains are?

@rabc The satellite pic is from 2023. So I think there is a chance the trains are still there?

@rabc Thank you! If the trains are anywhere there it'll be on the eastern side of the tracks. And if you want to come along on 1 June for some odd investigative journalism then you're very welcome (if you judge there is indeed something to find!)

Heartbroken to confirm that my train-based travelling workshop ‘Jože Plečnik at ground level’, offered as part of Umeå School of Architecture’s summer course, has been cancelled.

Why? We planned to depart Umeå on 12 June, twenty days from now. Trafikverket (the Swedish Transport Agency) has STILL not confirmed timetables for daytime trains Umeå - Stockholm and Stockholm - Hamburg. It’s impossible for us to wait for them to confirm engineering plans and to allow SJ to open ticket sales.

@jamesbenedictbrown Damn! That'd be an excellent combination, but that Trafikverket messes things up in the summer is inevitable... And a Plečnik tour by rail would be @samy 's sort of thing - she was the one who introduced me to his work...

@sinnundverstand Das ist Jirikov - Ebersbach

Es gibt weniger als 1km zwischen den Bahnhöfen - die haben die Schienen in Jirikov abgebaut weil tschische Bürger könnte nach 1990 Ebersbach verwenden. Und dann haben die alle Züge dann gestrichen!

Mal angenommen, ich möchte mit der vogtlandbahn von Zwickau nach Cheb fahren.

Auf Deutscher Seite habe ich ein BC100/Deutschland Ticket.
Wo/Wie kaufe ich da am besten eine Fahrkarte für den Rest der Strecke?

Ganze Strecke (mit oder ohne Discount für DE Anteil) bei bahn.de sowie bei cd.cz lässt sich nicht online kaufen.

Teilstücke der Strecke (letzter Bahnhof in DE - Cheb) lassen sich bei cd.cz kaufen, jedoch ist das Stückeln und das findet die Länderbahn ja nicht so geil.

Es gibt noch das Touren-Ticket beim ZuB wohl direkt im Zug, aber das kostet 11,50 € für die ganze Strecke.

Was mache ich denn da am besten?

@f2k1de Ich mache genau das gleiche am Freitag. Ich kaufe einfach ein Ticket von den letzten Deutschen Bahnhof bis Cheb. Warum hat Die Länderbahn etwas gegen Stückeln?

In a few days, I'll go from Strasbourg to City by .

For the first part of the travel (Strasbourg — Metz), I'll have, as usual, an e-ticket on my (official SNCF) app. But for the second part (Metz — Luxembourg), I'll have to use a code I received to print (in a train station only, I can't do it at home) the ticket. As Luxembourgian trains are free (yeah 🇱🇺🇱🇺) I fail to understand why I can't have a “normal” ticket.

It's not the worst piece I have read, but also does not get to the heart of the issues really.

And DB is comparatively good - DE to AT, CH, CZ, BE, NL all work OK.

It's basically anything to FR that's always a nightmare, and there DB is not the one to blame...

@rainerklute Agree. Actually this is one of the few things France does better than Germany at rail travel - you can book further ahead.

If nothing else, Mastodon seems to be pretty convincing evidence that an edit button can work. I'm not seeing many cases of it being abused the way many worried it would be.

Bad actors are the problem, not the tools. Get rid of the bad faith people, and we can have nice things.

@Yakkafo Compulsory reservation can also be a nightmare. Indeed for the sake of the number of passengers transported it is a nightmare. And reliability, sure. But if you have 3 trains a day that are reliable that’s no good as you’ll transport too few people.
