QR codes are nice as an addition to URLs on conference presentation slides, but they're not great as a replacement. If you're using a QR code to link to a website, please share human-readable URLs on your slides as well.
@jonafato We're going all digital on our handouts this year and hadn't fully considered this. At the moment the QR Code takes them directly to the handout for that session, the displayed URL takes them to the general handout site and then they have to navigate to the appropriate session (there are 500+ sessions over 7 days). Might reconsider and come up with a short domain/session pattern for the URLs.
@box464 Update-able short urls are nice for this. I know a bunch of people that use linktree and similar tools for this sort of info, too. My main issue here was QR codes displayed without any sort of URL, so I have no way of seeing the content at all without holding up my phone in the middle of a conference presentation.
Periodic reminder that https://github.com/python-organizers/conferences/ exists as a community-maintained list of Python conferences to help speakers, sponsors, and attendees keep track of events. If you know of a Python conference with published dates (and perhaps other details) that is not already tracked in that repository, pull requests are always welcome.
There are still a ton of Python folks who I tend to describe as "people I've definitely been in the same room with but not actually met". Hoping to actually say hello to many of them this week at PyCon US. Feel free to ping me if you'd like to make sure we find a time to meet each other.
I'll be at PyCon US next week. Looking forward to seeing old friends and new. And looking forward to meeting a bunch of my friends that I've known for years now, in-person for the first time.
Conference Chats (https://www.conferencechats.org) Wednesday call starts in 2.5 hours. We've had excellent discussions and welcomed some new people to the group in recent months, which is a trend that I'm excited to see continue. Discord link on the website for those that would like to join. No conference organizing experience necessary, just an interest in building community spaces and events.
Questions like "does anyone know what this video connector is?" will completely derail me and consume my attention until a series of adapters is assembled. Every time.
@jonafato My Home Assistant box has been broken for four months because I'm missing a micro or mini HDMI adapter, which I own at least two of. Some day...
Conference Chats (https://www.conferencechats.org) Friday call starts in 10 minutes. Looking forward to seeing some new and familiar faces! Discord link on the website.
Are there any anti-"people search" / personal data removal services that are open source and / or operate as a non-profit (i.e. are less incentivized to act against their customers' best interests)?
@mpirnat Media quality is a big factor. The other is access, i.e. who knows when my favorite movie or TV show may just disappear from a streaming service and never show up again. I'm hoping (but not holding my breath) that this means there will be some room to thrive for smaller specialty retailers.
It's probably about time I wrote a review of my framework laptop. TL;DR preview: love the concept, quality hardware, but it currently feels like a tough sell for anyone that might need to use their warranty and is not comfortable swapping laptop parts on their own.
Their target market is obviously folks who are likely to tinker and swap parts, but there's a lot of value in e.g. being able to go into an Apple store and get your hardware issues fixed without needing to DIY. It'd be super cool to see some sort of "find a local indie repair shop that will swap your board for you" directory on the website.
My new SofaBaton X1S remote isn't perfect, but it has some cool features and is significantly better than having three different remotes. I never owned a Logitech Harmony, but I'm told this is one of the closest alternatives that's being made today.
@jonafato We've got three Harmony remotes in active service right now, and I was unfortunately too slow to pick up extras as they were being discontinued. It'll be a sad day when we can't use them any more. They were really nice.
