Hey, friends who are more with it than I am… I finally finished the game that was holding me back from starting , but I already feel choice paralysis about character creation. What classes have you enjoyed playing? Or if something wasn’t fun, what should I avoid?

I’ve played D&D since the 80s, but this will be my first BG game.

Witnessed an for the first time tonight. Magnificent! I commend the magnetosphere for its role in making this possible. A+, would marvel at the cosmos again.

Roughly a month ago we had a total eclipse. Tonight we had an aurora. What celestial wonder awaits me in June?

mpirnat,
@mpirnat@mas.to avatar

Guess I should share a couple of the #aurora photos that my wife took tonight. (In my haste to go outside I forgot my phone.)

The aurora borealis shines with pale green and deep magenta, filling the sky above a tree-filled suburban neighborhood.

Halp - Grammarly's free 'business' accounts for nonprofits just expired, and i didn't realize it would mean all my "Snippets" (a bank of frequently used formatted text accessible via shortcut) would no longer work (and also be deleted 😭 )

Any alternatives out there to Snippets anyone can share?

Having to cut and paste identical answers to a bajillion PyCon sponsors a week out from the event is cracking my already strained sanity 😭

mpirnat,
@mpirnat@mas.to avatar

@bitprophet @lorenipsum I use Alfred for my snippets needs (it’s one of the MANY things it can do, and it’s not subscription-based), but TextExpander is also legit.

It doesn't bode well that the server turned itself off due to overheating when it's not even that hot yet.

mpirnat,
@mpirnat@mas.to avatar

@tek It just needs to run some dirt on it and take a lap.

🤔 My six-year-old just told me that commercials are just people lying to you to get your money, and he is not wrong.

mpirnat,
@mpirnat@mas.to avatar

@webology Hey neat! That’s basically how I explained commercials to my daughter when she was little and didn’t understand why shows got interrupted every few minutes.

Tek Jr texted excitedly that Sisters of Mercy are playing a local show right after my birthday, and that wouldn't it be a delightful treat for me to take my whole family to see them.

Suspicious motives aside, yes, it will be.

mpirnat,
@mpirnat@mas.to avatar

@tek I’m excited to see they’ll be in Cleveland (on a Friday night, no less!) but have some trepidation as they were awful when I saw them at the House of Blues here a number of years ago. Fingers crossed that a different venue might break that curse for me.

mpirnat,
@mpirnat@mas.to avatar

@tek The biggest problems I had were a complete lack of female vocalists, and that their fog machine set off the venue smoke alarms, which meant the house lights were all on and the only amplified sound was from the on-stage monitors/amps.

mpirnat,
@mpirnat@mas.to avatar

@tek Also the little strobe lights on the smoke alarms kept flashing. It was a super bummer no fun evening.

mpirnat,
@mpirnat@mas.to avatar

@tek Of course! I had hopes that it would get fixed. Hahahah.

Glass (2019)

I enjoyed Split last night. Time to see how the 3rd movie works.

mpirnat,
@mpirnat@mas.to avatar

@webology @onelson Given the complete lack of plan for the sequel trilogy, I’d say they were just scrambling to give her an on-screen exit that made even a little sense, since they’d left her alive at the end of Ep8 and now couldn’t film any new material for Ep9.

Slack should have an option to show all the times of things in both local time and UTC so I don't need to think so hard when I look at chats, then look at logs or metrics.

mpirnat,
@mpirnat@mas.to avatar

@onelson I have a UTC clock on my work desk. It’s gradually helped me build a more intuitive sense of UTC.

mpirnat,
@mpirnat@mas.to avatar

@onelson Yup, totally agree. I’d love to have both local and UTC timestamps simultaneously, everywhere.

Ever since getting the 15 Pro last year, I made myself a rule to never buy a device with a lightning port again.

So I am begging Apple to please update the AirPods Max and the Apple Magic Keyboard/Trackpad. 🙏

mpirnat,
@mpirnat@mas.to avatar

@grantmc I saw a thing recently about modding the AirPods Max to use USB-C, but balked when I saw that it involved having to remove adhesive via chemical means.

mpirnat,
@mpirnat@mas.to avatar

@grantmc When it was “unscrew these 4 screws, where two of them have to be unscrewed clockwise” I was like “okay that’s weird but I could do that”. And then they used a solvent to melt some adhesive and I decided it wasn’t for me. 😅

Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace (1999)

Background TV as I wind down my work day.

I'll work my way through the main 9 movies over the next few days, and starting with The Phantom Menace might be sacrilege to some, but who cares.

mpirnat,
@mpirnat@mas.to avatar

@onelson Carrie Fisher died after 8. Her Ep9 footage is from outtakes that didn’t make it into Ep7 that they built a story around. That’s a big part of why it feels off.

Inspired by a thing I saw on Reddit earlier today, I’m going to try listening to more complete albums this year. Maybe daily? We’ll see how it shakes out.

I’m starting off with the 2019 mix of Abbey Road by The Beatles: https://songwhip.com/the-beatles/abbey-road-2019-mix

126/366: The Velvet Machine by Neal Acree

Meant to post this for Sunday. My friends who dig cinematic synthy instrumental stuff will love this, I think. I stumbled onto it by accident—turns out Acree has a TON of cool soundtrack credits (Stargate SG1, Vox Machina, WoW, Diablo 3, more), and this is his first solo album.

128/366: X by The Beloved

Doing this alphabet game with my album picks sometimes pushes me to try artists that I’m completely unfamiliar with; today is one of those days. I’m a couple tracks in and it seems all right — a mid 90s dance sound that I definitely harbor nostalgic affection for.

130/366: Zenyatta Mondatta by The Police

I think “Don’t Stand So Close to Me” is the only thing I’ve ever heard off of this one; it was certainly inescapable on the radio and MTV. Time to see if there’s anything else interesting here…

Oh well, they can’t all be winners.

131/366: The Dimension Gate by Aurora Sutra

I waffled a bit about what to pick today as I get back to alpha-by-artist, but after seeing an actual aurora tonight… Yeah. Had to do it.

I haven’t listened to this in a long time, but I remember I really dug the instrumental elements suite in the back half, and the third track, “The Garden of Temptation”, was on a cool sampler from Cleopatra Records that helped expand my tastes.
