today I am reading about standardised data message formats and slowly losing the will to live.

jpm,
@jpm@aus.social avatar

@Kels_316 that’s the great thing about standards, there’s so many to choose from, and if you don’t like any of them you can just write your own

Here’s a question: what would you say is the most culturally-significant item for Australians?

(note: auspol-style answers will get an instant block)

jpm,
@jpm@aus.social avatar

@ThermiteBeGiants I think it would depend on where in Australia you are, there would definitely be regional variations.

But.

Why didn’t someone tell me you can add the same schematic sheet to kicad more than once and then any changes are applied to all copies. This is exactly what I was after. Currently splitting up my whole project in to pages, and it feels good

jpm,
@jpm@aus.social avatar

@vk3xe I discovered that, uh, not very long ago? It’s pretty neat

jpm,
@jpm@aus.social avatar

@vk3xe the pin helpers are pretty neat. Select pins on an IC, helper can create either labels or wires from the ones you’ve selected.

Also, the pin alternate mode selection function is nice.

Best iOS app for Mastodon? Anyone? Bueller?
Balance of ease of use, cleverness, cost, etc.

@trib if you used TweetBot on the hell bird app web site, you’ll feel right at home with Ivory. Is it worth $2/month? I say yes, with the balance of what I would be giving to Elon going to @shlee instead

Shit pitch: public sector engaged consultancies should apply a standardised framework of employment level codes to their employees, so that all the rank dorks in the APS and State public services know who they’re allowed to tell to fuck off and who they can’t bully

@neoluddite @nickzoic @liamvhogan … you’re basically describing Home Affairs

I have a really weird network issue and if anyone has any ideas, I'm all ears:

• I have four ESP32s connected to wifi, all identical boards (Adafruit's HUZZAH32), and three of them are dropping off the wifi network at the exact same time, exactly every half hour. The fourth has been connected solidly for days.
• It's not ON the half hour, but every 30 minutes, the last disconnections recorded by our Ubiquiti Dream Router have been 11:39, 12:09, 12:39, 13:09, 13:39, etc.
• They're all running the exact same code, they DO have a different set of sensors attached (and the one that isn't dropping out only has one sensor attached), but I can't see how that would affect it, and especially not across multiple boards.
• The ESP32s connect to Mosquitto running on a Raspberry Pi and it doesn't report any conflicts in clientIds, only that the boards have disconnected when the wifi drops off and reconnected when they reconnect.
• They're set to use DHCP but always get the same "static" address each time.

aliensguy.jpg

My next step is going to be to physically swap the non-dropping one out for one of the dropping ones and see if that makes a difference, but beyond that I'm completely flummoxed.

jpm,
@jpm@aus.social avatar

@virtualwolf the different set of sensors makes different behavior is a big clue here. Sounds like the power supply on the ESP32 is shitting itself under a transient load spike.

jpm,
@jpm@aus.social avatar

@virtualwolf the other obvious possibility of “it crashes with this sensor but not without it” is that the code handling that sensor has an issue and is crashing the MCU. I’m not too familiar with the ESP32 because I normally design for ultra-low-power using tiny ARM MCUs, but is there a way to get “last reset reason” out of the ESP32 like most ARM MCUs have?

They used to teach first aiders to leave a crush injury because removing a crushing force could release trapped body chemistry problems to flow around the body. Now they recommend get the piano off the dude, which always sort of made more sense to me. Continuing to be crushed is worse than any problems stopping it causes.

jpm,
@jpm@aus.social avatar

@geordie I believe @Kels_316 has been recently reviewing first aid courses. I remember when that advice changed, it’s not that the blood chemistry stuff has gone away, it was noted “just be prepared to start CPR pretty much straight away”

So I arrived at the house today to find a couple of gas workers removing my gas line.

Which, ok, I do want that. But!! I didn't book it in.

In fact, I called CovAU and to ask about the price, but they couldn't give me a price in advance, and their estimate was 2-4x more than the government rate information, so I explicitly told them not to book. And followed it up with an email saying the same, which they replied to in confirmation.

Has anyone else had this happen?

#GetOffGas #Renovation #Melbourne

jpm,
@jpm@aus.social avatar

@keira_reckons nope, we just “moved out” according to the gas retailer, line and meter stayed in place, and all we had to pay was an extra meter read charge same as you’d normally get charged when you move out

jpm,
@jpm@aus.social avatar

@keira_reckons strangely enough it’s what the retailer suggested we do

There's a new business kicking around that I should contact in some way. I looked up their website, saw their The Team page and the profiles listed and experienced genuine dread and a feeling of falling into an abyss. Closed the window and crossed that one off the list.

I think I've become sensitized to corporate bullshit. Or perhaps radicalized against.
