I have a really weird network issue and if anyone has any ideas, I'm all ears:

• I have four ESP32s connected to wifi, all identical boards (Adafruit's HUZZAH32), and three of them are dropping off the wifi network at the exact same time, exactly every half hour. The fourth has been connected solidly for days.
• It's not ON the half hour, but every 30 minutes, the last disconnections recorded by our Ubiquiti Dream Router have been 11:39, 12:09, 12:39, 13:09, 13:39, etc.
• They're all running the exact same code, they DO have a different set of sensors attached (and the one that isn't dropping out only has one sensor attached), but I can't see how that would affect it, and especially not across multiple boards.
• The ESP32s connect to Mosquitto running on a Raspberry Pi and it doesn't report any conflicts in clientIds, only that the boards have disconnected when the wifi drops off and reconnected when they reconnect.
• They're set to use DHCP but always get the same "static" address each time.

My next step is going to be to physically swap the non-dropping one out for one of the dropping ones and see if that makes a difference, but beyond that I'm completely flummoxed.

@virtualwolf@aus.social avatar

@jpm I'll have to check, but interestingly it's not actually crashing, it just... disconnects from the wifi and reconnects. And all three boards are doing it at the same time which is the bit that's REALLY confusing me, haha.

virtualwolf,
@virtualwolf@aus.social avatar

The plot thickens! I disconnected BOTH of the sensors from the board in the office, so it has nothing attached at all apart from power, and it STILL disconnected at exactly the same time with the rest of them. 🤔

virtualwolf,
@virtualwolf@aus.social avatar

Okay I think it's time to break out tcpdump.

virtualwolf,
@virtualwolf@aus.social avatar

Mystery solved: It was nothing to do with networking or power supply or the sensors that were attached to the ESP32s.

What happened was that the mosquitto.db persistence file on the Raspberry Pi that runs Mosquitto had ballooned to 375MB (I still need to investigate what this was) and Mosquitto auto-saves its in-memory database to that file every 30 minutes. Mosquitto blocks while it's writing the file, and that file was big enough — and the SD card slow enough — that the MQTT library on the ESP32s was taking that lack of response to mean that the broker and wifi was down and so disconnected and reconnected.

(I discovered this by enabling full debug logging in Mosquitto and saw that everything ground to a halt as soon as the persistence file started being written to.)

Many thanks to @stibbons @cthulhu @cefiar @ausfestivus @jpm @mathi_gwithyas @aussiegeek @s0 for all the suggestions!

Nobody ‘earns’ a billion dollars. There’s a quality difference between someone like Gina Rinehart who inherited her fortune and Mike Cannon-Brookes who founded a successful firm, but Cannon-Brookes now simply extracts a rent from the business. They’re different but not that different.

(Context: https://www.smh.com.au/money/saving/australia-has-more-billionaires-than-ever-that-s-nothing-to-celebrate-20240322-p5fej7.html)

virtualwolf,
@virtualwolf@aus.social avatar

@liamvhogan The best comparison I've ever read, and it will stick with me forever, is comparing a million seconds, which is around 12 days or so, to a billion seconds, which is over thirty-two YEARS.

Dogs aren’t usually allowed in public pools for health reasons but on the last day before they close for the season a pool near me invites all the local dogs for a swim. It’s the happiest thing imaginable

A happy looking brown corgi in a green life jacket stands on the edge of a pool
Two large wet black dogs at the edge of a pool
An orange and cream chow chow dog lies in a shallow pool

I posted that no Pakistani American has ever been elected to Congress & I’d be the first ever.

A not insignificant number of people responded upset that I ignored Rashida Tlaib—the first Palestinian American in Congress.🤔

So—to clarify—Palestine & Pakistan are 2 different nations.

Cheers!

I've been quiet for the past week because I've been on the road. I'll talk about where I'm going later, but I've decided to leave the US because my growing disgust with this country has been a dominant theme for the last few months.

I lived overseas a few years ago, and that experience really put how despicable the US is in sharp focus. When I came back to deal with family issues, I knew I wouldn't stay, but I decided to live in Cali for a bit and got comfortable.

This past year has made it clear that I need to escape the US for a while. Between the absurdity of finding employment, unprovoked violence from law enforcement, and now, white vigilantes carrying hate crimes every other day, I need to get back to my plan of leaving the US for good.

I love traveling, so being back out on the road has been refreshing, but the larger context is that I can't ignore my growing repugnance with the place of my birth.

So I'm making some changes.

virtualwolf,
@virtualwolf@aus.social avatar

@grrrr_shark @Are0h Yep my wife renounced her US citizenship a few years ago and had much the same experience. She also had to fill out a ton of paperwork and pay about AU$4000 for the privilege.

And what's completely ridiculous is you never get any confirmation from the IRS everything has gone through successfully, it's just a case of "If you don't hear anything, it's fine", without even any timeframe for when you might hear something if it WASN'T fine. >_<

:farnsworth: GOOD NEWS EVERYBODY: According to @AltTextHealthCheck our wonderful Mastodon instance is one of the most actively "ALT TEXT" posting instances in the fediverse (14th on this list).... with more than 60% of our media containing alt text as far as this shows.

This is lovely to see, and congratulations to mastodon.nz for smashing it!

apparently, Indigenous people posting on Mastodon means we have to politely accept annoying reply guys, with their annoying comments, in our notifications. Even when our posts specifically asks them not to reply.

Fuck right off with that respectability bullshit. If you don't like it when staunch Indigenous people speak their truth and assert online boundaries, then go ahead and block me. Or, just stay out of my notifications.

virtualwolf,
@virtualwolf@aus.social avatar

@KarenWyld "just stay out of my notifications"

I don't understand how or why this is so fucking difficult for some people, ugh.

geordie, to random

In one of the very mainstream normy Facebook groups I'm in someone decided to post "there are two genders."

I replied "That's like saying there's two temperatures, hot, and cold. I mean it's sort of like that if you put the least conceivable amount of thought into it, but for a whole bunch of people it doesn't work and they need to go into detail, and that's fine. For most people, it's a hot day or it's a cold day, but then some people are like it's 17 degrees which exists kinda inbetween."

And this Facebook group that has never ever had gender discourse, nor will it ever again, gave me like 160 likes and a few comments like "Huh..." then the OP deleted their post lol.

First job of the long weekend was a VERY overdue mowing of the lawn. It was so long that the bin was completely full from the clippings in the back yard and so I didn't even bother doing the front. Also mowed/whippersnipped the horrendous mess of weeds that's at the side of the house where the hot water system and air conditioning compressor are, where we never go.

I started an "Outdoor Walk" workout on my Apple Watch and when I finished it had registered about 1750 active kilojoules after an hour and a half. For comparison my 45 minute workouts on the elliptical are typically around 2000 active kilojoules, so that was a decent effort. ::collapses in a heap::

A photo of our back yard, covered in calf-high long grass and weeds. Part of the patio is visible also has a bunch of weeds growing from in between the bricks.
