If you see two people together of different ethnicities or races, don’t assume they’re “just friends” and not a couple. And don’t act surprised if your assumption is wrong.

And yes, I’m saying this because a highly unpleasant conversation just occurred.

@atomicpoet my Dad is Chinese and my Mom is Caucasian. When I was a baby, my Mom would take me out places alone and people used to ask her "oh when did you adopt him?" I can't believe this is still happening here in Canada. I'm very sorry you went through that

My brother left some drops of water on the leaves of one of his house plants that he left outside overnight and now these marks are permanently part of the leaves.

I asked him if the sun caused it, but he assured me that the plant was only outside overnight. The marks have been on the leaves for a year now

@MLE_online when I first heard about water lensing on plant leaves, I read a study on it, and it said that low angle sun in the morning and late afternoon caused the most damage. The traditional thought was that it watering at noon would do the most damage but the experiments seemed to disprove it. Would he have taken in the plant inside before the sun came up?

@gsuberland is it common to shorten miles to mls?

@jason @gsuberland same, but I live in a country that uses the metric system, so I was unsure about mls

justinto,
@justinto@mas.to avatar

@gsuberland @jason is they all feel too close to mils for me not to make a mistake

justinto,
@justinto@mas.to avatar

@gsuberland @jason exactly, but if I'm not thinking about if it's small or big, I could make a "huge" mistake. It's bad enough that people will often say "mils" for millimeters here

Dreamt I was looking at an old comic-style drawing of kids playing baseball in a muddy lot in the early 1900s, when I suddenly found myself in the scene itself, which turned out to be a movie about the early life of Babe Ruth, starring a young John Candy as Babe Ruth.

While talking with a young woman about how he didn't have a social life anymore because he was always playing baseball, he threw two baseballs at a teammate who he felt wasn't paying good enough attention on the field.

I walked a short distance to a nearby bridge and watched people walk along a snowy moonlit path that ran the length of the river below the bridge. The snow sparked in the moon light, and I was overcome with emotion by the beauty of the scene, thinking to myself that everything in dreams is always so beautiful. Then I woke up

@MLE_online I'm not sure if you are aware of it, but John Candy played Babe Ruth on SCTV skit https://youtu.be/w-hpRGXclIo

@MLE_online I hope it doesn't ruin your dream! SCTV was a Canadian sketch comedy show, which was pretty funny. There are a lot of episodes of SCTV. The quality varies, but there's usually some good laughs and the cast is some of the best Canadian comedians

The Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission is auditing me at work next week because somehow I became a nuclear energy worker and this is a normal but it is my first evaluation and I have a bit of imposter syndrome because I worked at a college before and now I work with linacs because that is similar to dealing with students and FPGAs and I know what I am doing with the linacs but there is something about having a "radiation safety inspection" that makes me feel like they are going to call me out

Some techy stuff that'll hit all the hashtags…

As a bit of a project, I noticed my old is quite near my 3D printer (basement) and it just runs a server. It has more capacity than that, so I attached an old usb camera, loaded and wrote some to take a pic of the printer and stuff it into both a web page and a home assistant dashboard.

Some innovation though…

In 1988, Echelon came out for DOS – it looked like the future!

I thought, “Wow! This is in actual 3D!”

And from my kid perspective living in the 80s, it was true. It had wireframe graphics and ultra-smooth scrolling. When I piloted the ship, it felt like I was completely in control.

We may snicker now at the EGA graphics but you got to understand that an NES couldn’t do this. Echelon really showed off what PCs at the time were capable of doing. It was revelatory.

Returning to it now, it’s amazing how far we’ve come in the past 36 years. However, playing this game is still fun – if only to stare at those wireframes!

So a total eclipse is an amazing experience and you should do your best to be in the path of totality. I was unconvinced I should bother going to the path of totality (in this case, my sister's house 45 minutes away), but I was truly wrong.

I feel very lucky to have been able to experience the eclipse with my family. My nephews and neice were so excited and I'm sure it was an experience that will stick with them.

A special thanks to @MLE_online for pushing me to go to the path of totality!

I'm completely fine with the signs they have put up in my neighbourhood for bikers to remember that pedestrians have the right of way and that the multi-use trails are shared paths. There are bad bikers who need reminding.

It would be great if we did the same things for cars, because they seem confused about the rules, and that has deadly results. I have never once seen a sign reminding drivers that the road is shared with bikes or that pedestrians have the right of way.

Do people think they are helping by responding to a question with an AI response? I was asking humans! If you as the human don't know the answer to the question, then how do you know if the AI answers you blindly copied & pasted is correct? Why are just sending noise? It makes you seem completely void of humanity and I think it's strange to feverishly try and collect internet points for your plagiarism of a plagiarism machine.

Do you have loose 18650s that need to be recycled? No problem, just drop those off at a store. Do you have an ebike battery, made of 18650s? You need to leave your city and go at least 60 KM to find one of 4 drop off locations in Ontario serving almost 15 million people.

We need to do better. There are an incredible amount of ebikes now and they will all need their batteries properly disposed of eventually.

Any store that sells an ebike must be made accept the batteries back for recycling.

justinto,
@justinto@mas.to avatar

@MLE_online Absolutely! Them money is even there to ensure there is a system for dealing with the batteries, but no cares enough until people start setting garbage trucks on fire when given no other choice for disposal.

For the total eclipse on April 8th, I will be taking the day off of work. Where I live is about 99% eclipse totality. I keep fighting the urge to go to the center line of the eclipse, which is honestly not far at all, but will make an such a small difference.

Make sure your viewing glasses are ISO 2312-2 certified!

The ground is warm, so there's no accumulation of snow and no ice, but there's a ton of sidewalk salt already. This really needs to stop. It's supposed to be a tablespoon of salt per meter square but people put so much down that you could slip on the salt. I really hope this habit stops
