The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) categories are often misunderstood.

Aspartame is categorized in Group 2B, which includes things like pickled vegetables, Gingko and Aloe Vera extract.

Funnily enough, all the above are considered to pose less risk of cancer than Group 2A, which includes mundane things such as red meat and “very hot beverages” .

Do you consider the term "rice" or "ricer" to be racist?

The Wikipedia definition seems to indicate it has origins as a racist term and I’ve never understood why unix users have adopted this terms instead of something benign like “themes” or “theming” which I remember being in use long before I ever heard “rice”. So what gives? Why use “rice” instead of “theme”?

@kabe@lemmy.world avatar

I don’t know but it seems like it’s a 'nix thing.

I was in the Windows customization scene for years and never heard the term “ricing” until I discovered customization on Linux.

The whole point of lemmy.world is that it’s a general, welcome-to-all instance.

If you want server admins who take overtly political stances and actions on behalf of their users, you have instances like lemmy.ml to choose from.

Sounds like you made the right choice for yourself.
I wish you the best.

For those who don’t know, Iannuuci is the guy behind the movie The Death of Stalin, and the political satire series Veep and The Thick of It.

His stuff is always worth a watch.

Thanks, /u/tweak@lemm.ee

Edit: I don’t see a link when using this method on Voyager or Jerboa, whereas @TWeaK does work. It seems Lemmy apps don’t support your way of doing it yet.

I think the @user tag does. If you check your inbox under mentions, you should see a notification for that but not for /u/user@instance.

I wish people would write some descriptions for their communities

I often browse /all, come across a post that looks interesting but I have no clue what’s it about, so I check the sidebar - and all I find is “An unofficial Lemmy community for X”, " A place to discuss everything about X", or the best kind, “A continuation of r/X from Reddit”....

kabe,
@kabe@lemmy.world avatar

In case this is of any use to you or others, here’s what I’ve found to work well:

  1. Summary of what the community is about
  2. Community rules of conduct
  3. Links to related communities that offer similar content
  4. Some additional info/useful links that are related to the topic.

Good formatting also makes it look clean and professional.

Shameless plug: check these out

Depends on how much of a Chris Nolan fan or a movie geek you are, tbh. But if it’s not too much trouble then, yeah definitely. It’s pretty rare to have a film shot on 70mm IMAX, so it’s worth seeing it just to appreciate the full potential of the format.

This article has a good summary about why IMAX 1570 is so special:

Most movies today are shot using digital cameras, or if on film, it’s 35mm. IMAX 15/70 film frames are considerably larger. The number 15 refers to each frame having 15 perforations across – these being the holes that are used to hold the film as it moves through the projector. The 70 refers to the fact that the frame is 70mm tall. This compares with regular 70mm or 35mm film stock, which has only five perforations down. IMAX 15/70 frame is, therefore, 8.3x larger than 35mm and 3.4 times larger than 70mm – and the result is unprecedented quality.

This large frame allows much more fine detail to be captured, delivering richer colors and greater contrast. The highest-resolution digital cinema cameras have 8K sensors, and digital projection maxes out at 4K resolution but some estimate IMAX film stock to have an equivalent resolution of 16K. Let’s leave it to Chris Nolan himself to sum up with his belief that IMAX 15/70 is, “the highest quality imaging format ever devised – [it] gives you an incredible sense of immersion in the image. The clarity, the crispness – it is the gold standard.”

WIP Reddit CSS theme (lemmy.world)

Hey all! So lemmy-ui actually supports custom themes, i.e. Instance owners can drag and drop a css file into an extra_themes folder. I noticed a reddit theme did not exist (at the time of writing), so I’ve begun working on one. I’m gonna keep working on it, but I always like to take a step back and ponder if this is even a...

Check out this custom CSS from /u/frellwit@lemmy.world.

lemmy.world/post/1376086

Not only does it make Lemmy look much better on desktop without turning it into a Reddit clone, it adds some subtle but very cool little features:

  • Uses rounded thumbnails to external links.
  • Uses square thumbnails to internal images.
  • Colored proprietary social media thumbs with their brand colors. (So you don’t accidentally click on a youtube link for example).

I’m no expert on the Council of Foreign Relations, but this article seems to be mostly factual. Your characterization of it as a “shadowy cabal” is much stronger than any claim made in the actual article except perhaps the line right at the end that reads

It was not until the 2016 election that the Council couldn’t, apparently, prevail.

Implying, of course, that Trump was someone whom the group couldn’t (allegedly, at least) influence.

So, as to the claim that the group is “shadowy”, I would say is provably incorrect, seeing as they have a publicly accessible website and even offer membership applications.

As to the extent that they decide US Foreign policy, well that’s a little harder to quantity. Washington has many powerful think-tanks that influence both sides of the political spectrum to varying degrees. The fact that many of the members of these organizations own, or partly own, media conglomerates is also a matter of fact.

“In 2008, CFR member John McCain lost against CFR candidate of choice, Barack Obama” didn’t also catch your eye? No source is cited, nor did some quick googling I did find any evidence. My googlefu is not the best, though.

Yeah, that’s definitely a citation needed moment. All I could find regarding who the CFR endorsed in 2008 were right-wing conspiracy blogs and YouTube videos that contained only insinuations rather than provable facts.

Then Noam Chomsky is cited as a reputable source for commentary on journalism? He’s a linguistics professor.

Chomsky is also a well-regarded intellectual who co-authored the book https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Manufacturing_Consent, which remains a highly influential text on the media and the military-industrial complex even today. His politics clearly lean towards the libertarian socialist/anarchist end of the spectrum, though, so of course he has his critics and detractors.

I haven’t heard of it before, but it seems to be a pretty stereotypical, right-libertarian site with pretensions of being a respectable organization even though it is apparently run by one guy with some highly questionable political views.

Content warning: blatant racism

ISGP’s charming sidebar

I haven’t objectively examined the accuracy of the reporting on this site, but my hunch is that it would be pretty low.

By the way, have you noticed the problem with hover mouse events over links on dark mode?

They disappear: picture of black link on black background

I’ve tried to fix it by sadly my CSS skills aren’t up to the task.

kabe, (edited )
@kabe@lemmy.world avatar

Aha, that was it - I forgot that I had set my Lemmy theme to litely and was relying on the Dark Reader FF extension to automatically switch between night and day with Gnome.

Switching Lemmy to darkly makes your theme display correctly. Now I just have to figure out a different way to get automatic day/night theme working properly 😅

kabe, (edited )
@kabe@lemmy.world avatar

Yeah, on Gnome there is a shell extension that automatically switches between light and dark system themes at a predefined time. The only problem is getting Lemmy to follow suit.

I’ll try the Browser Default setting again and see if that works this time 👍

EDIT: It does. I’m an idiot.

Receive notifications for new posts only within moderated communities

I see there is a setting for Show Notifications for New Posts but I haven’t wanted to select it as at face value I would see that as all posts in any community. Does that setting by chance only apply to communities we moderate? If not is there a setting somewhere for that?

kabe,

Does that setting by chance only apply to communities we moderate?

It does not, sadly.

If not is there a setting somewhere for that?

Not yet. It would be great, though.

Is there any reason NOT to use openSUSE Tumbleweed as a desktop OS?

It seems like its a perfect distro. Rolling release so you get recent packages and dont have huge upgrades every few months, but not so bleeding edge that it breaks often. YaST is pretty cool but you are not forced to use it. Basic installation gives you enough essential stuff, but its not too bloated. The only thing its missing...

Here are a few reasons I can think why some may not take to it. Trigger warning for Suse users

  • Out-of-the-box aesthetics are pretty ugly (why are they still using that godawful default wallpaper?)
  • Yast looks like the Windows 95 control panel (I guess this might be a plus for some people?)
  • Zypper can be sluggish to update and install packages
  • regular package updates are large, even compared to Arch
  • Seems to have more frequent security/password prompts (a good thing for enterprise scenarios, but not always welcome or necessary on a personal PC)

It’s not bad by any means, but I’ve tried it out several times and always ended up abandoning it because of little niggles like the above.

kabe,
@kabe@lemmy.world avatar

Yeah, I can see why that may appeal to some people. Personally, I prefer a more modern look.

If Lemmy.world doesn't defederate from Threads, Meta and all things Zuck within 24 hours, I will shut down my subs and leave.

I didn’t come to a new service just to see it get taken over by the corporate beasts who ruined the internet in general, and I am sure as hell am not going to use an instance that doesn’t care about its users....

kabe,
@kabe@lemmy.world avatar

Nobody is federated with Meta because Threads doesn’t even support ActivityPub yet. People are getting on their soapboxes and high horses when literally nothing has even happened that would merit this level of histrionics.

Some people need to seriously chill the fuck out.

kabe, (edited )
@kabe@lemmy.world avatar

I understand why people have strong opinions on the matter. That’s fine.

However, issuing threats and ultimatums to Lemmy instance admins when 1) nothing has even happened yet, 2) we don’t know what federation with Meta would even look like, or 3) if/when it will even happen, is pure foolishness.

kabe,
@kabe@lemmy.world avatar

Signing up is a piece of cake - this guide just seems to include steps that most users won’t need, for some reason.

Were lemmy.word admins invited by Meta to the P92/Threads "off the record" meeting?

So I saw a recent post on lemmy from admins of another instance, forgive me for not remembering which, where they posted a full transparency update on Meta requesting a meeting with the admins of that instance. The admins declined, and then shared the correspondence with their community via screenshots of the original email from...

kabe, (edited )
@kabe@lemmy.world avatar

I’m sorry, when did everyone start taking conspiracy pills?

The Mastodon admin team said they’ll wait and see what happens, not that they are committed to not defederating no matter what happens.

Ruud is a busy guy - his “silence” is most likely because Threads hasn’t even federated yet (and possibly won’t anyway) and he has other shit to deal with - and people are already conjuring up scenarios involving clandestine NDAs and kickbacks based on no evidence whatsoever? Sheesh.
