Where is the content talking about contemporary software development issues? Like "How to migrate away from GraphQL?", "Maintaining software that was written by a team twice this size", "HTML and CSS for React Engineers", etc?

Some random thoughts from tackling AoC this morning in Elixir, an obscure and slightly odd language I do not know.

  1. Probably a good thing I don’t code for a living anymore, I find my family’s interruptions for things like food extra annoying when it interrupts coding.

Gmail is nearly useless to me. This week I connected with a recruiter for a job I want but only after their third time trying to contact me by email.

I get hundreds of useless emails per day but for some reason gmail filters didn’t pick up on “job interview” or “recruiter for company I got emails from a few days earlier”

My Gmail address is from 2003, so I’m an outlier but if your service can’t figure out which basic messages are important why should anyone use your product?

kellan,
@kellan@fiasco.social avatar

@mathowie agreed it’s falling apart, and it’s very frustrating and it makes me feel like I’m losing my mind (but gmail didn’t launch April 1, 2004)

Pre-graming for in and I'm annoyed that MapSet doesn't support characters.

WeWork could have remained a successful business if stuck to the one city it was developed in, NYC, where it was the killer way to get office space NOW (an impossible thing in NYC).

Reminds me of Kozmo.com, where if they stayed SF-only, they could have been small but still profitable.

Don’t believe the lies VC guys tell you, not every business should take over the planet.

kellan,
@kellan@fiasco.social avatar

@mathowie the point was made in Money Stuff today that getting big and failing was way more profitable than staying small and viable, at least for the founder

There is this important and under appreciated thing in open source where you leave some mess and some low hanging bugs so that your project is inviting in a way a gleaming edifice of architecture never is … some days I think this is my whole management vibe

Kiddo is going to Quaker school this year and hanging out with parents today lots of complaining like, “Can you believe no violent costumes?” “Can you believe they call it ‘Tug-of-Peace’” … and I can tell a lot of you weren’t raised by hippies.

Btw, if you have the core value that the more power and privilege you have the more responsibility and accountability is appropriate, I hate to break this to you, you might either be Spider-Man or an anarchist.

Also has anyone done any work on the how the changing nature of work place norms mean that folks out of academia are often more hierarchical and authoritarian in their impulses than folks out of Corporate America?

    part of work that i didn't understand at first was - if you make a career at companies starting at the <10 people stage - you only know if things work out years and years later. like eight years or more. for all the startups-moving-fast stuff, it's still not really an instant-gratification game.

    in hindsight, i've been pretty lucky (don't jinx it) but it's hard to understate the volatility getting there.

    A challenge we ran into at Dropbox and I’m seeing again at Adobe is there is a compelling ecosystem of developers and modern tools for doing native Apple development but not Windows. Which feels backwards given market size. So many conversations of “Sure it would be great in Swift but then what do we do for Windows?” to justify janky technology

    I've heard three main requests that content creators and platforms want AI companies to adhere to in order to train on their content:

    • Opt-out.
    • Credit.
    • Compensation.

    Unfortunately, copyright law doesn't really do enough to stop an AI company from doing a statistical analysis of your content. And most people aren't gungho to extend copyright law.

    That leaves platforms who can negotiate on your behalf or cut off access.

    kellan,

    DEAR HOT SAUCE/FOOD MASTODON (foodstodon?): Actual Huy Fong rooster-label Sriracha is completely unobtainable this year (chile shortage due to drought, climate change is also coming for your hot sauce). Are there any alternate srirachas that are an OK substitute to fill the gap?

    We are well-stocked for mexican-style and cajun-style hot sauces, it's the rooster sauce we can't replace, and we are running low. Also looking for a sambal olek.
