While we wait for better hardware, or better Transformer models, we have : https://arxiv.org/abs/2305.14314 which can let you train a large with less memory

@culurciello 4-bit quantization means they’re using 4-bit floating point numbers for all math, right? How is that not insane? That’s only 16 values…

$20/month isn't a ton of money, but if you use a free UI with the API, you can get away with paying less than $5/month for with relatively heavy usage and it's a lot more stable than the free version

A side effect of following hashtags is that there are some people who consistently post to them and I begin to believe that I follow them, but they seem very one-dimensional

kellogh,
@kellogh@hachyderm.io avatar

@zrail @ljunge yeah, if it wasn’t for Ivory I probably would unfollow all hashtags

It seems like South Carolina is emerging as some sort of cultural center of the Republican Party. Texas used to be it, and Florida, but it seems like they’re revolving around SC now

The endgame of devolving into Truth Social minus Trump is almost complete.

The House GOP still doesn't believe the debt ceiling deadline of June 1 is a real deadline. Conspiracy thinking has just rotted the brain trust there to the point where they are unwilling to see the iceberg coming https://www.cnbc.com/2023/05/23/debt-ceiling-negotiations-latest.html

kellogh,
@kellogh@hachyderm.io avatar

@xgerman @h_thoreson I keep telling myself that, but this one smells different. Seems like they’re staging to burn everything to the ground and then deny everything like they did with Jan 6

kellogh,
@kellogh@hachyderm.io avatar

@h_thoreson @xgerman and they’ve demonstrated that they can deny that the sun is bright, and their base will go along with it

I have my own views but I'll reserve them so as not to put a thumb on the scale.

Is either parmesan or pecorino an ingredient in homemade tomato sauce? Note I am not asking if it is added when plating, this is purely a question as to whether either are an ingredient in the sauce itself.

kellogh,
@kellogh@hachyderm.io avatar

@finserra @andrew obvs we’re taking about the stuff that’s mostly tomatoes and vinegar

kellogh,
@kellogh@hachyderm.io avatar

@finserra @andrew ah, sorry, that was a shitpost, I was describing catsup, but I officially envy the sauce you have in your house

kellogh,
@kellogh@hachyderm.io avatar

@andrew @randulo @finserra I did not grow up in an Italian home, but I did grow up in an Italian town, so I was self-aware enough to realize that the sauce we had at home was actually catsup

Java’s proposition of “compile once, run everywhere” seems very weak in 2023

@sigsegv kind of amazing the marketing was so strong

@katachora and rust and go get most of the “run everywhere” that people actually want, but without the massive layers of indirection

Why is something like Midjourney classified as artificial intelligence? Is anything generative just referred to as AI now because it's what the bandwagon's banner says?

kellogh,
@kellogh@hachyderm.io avatar

Alternately, someone in my mentions once said, “AI is tech that doesn’t quite work, once it starts working they call it something else”, which also seems fitting
