Yeah that’s true in my little milieu, to be sure. I thought maybe it was a byproduct of being raised by sarcastic people and everyone else was using it earnestly.

When defenders try to explain to me that it isn't about being pro-slavery, I'm still left wondering why you would want monuments to a team that came in second in a contest of two?

It'd be as if baseball stadiums flew pennants for years where they came in dead last. What are we commemorating?

You’d think Microsoft would have negotiated for some kind of exclusivity for search with Bing.

It just became semi relevant and it’s going to be relegated to third banana again. https://mastodon.social/@ricmac/112416562753787073

andrew,

@JoeStewart @icymi_law @ricmac

Just tried the same prompt and got the same results.

I would assume the way these LLMs are working for search is they're answering based on what they "know" and then backsolving from that to find something to cite to.

Right? I would expect actually performing a search and dumping the results of that search into a prompt and running it through the model would be too resource intensive.

Okay well look, if you’re going to have sensible answers that explain things … I mean … is this even the internet anymore?!

I kid of course. You’re right, though the worm thing seems so nuts I wonder if it would be believed if leaked. Sounds more like a rushed playground rumor.

In my column this week I discuss the general idea of injecting progressivity into the property tax regime.

When property values go up, income doesn’t always follow suit. This gives rise to myriad breaks from the FMV—assessment paradigm, which brings with it … problems.

Key it to income. (Property) tax the rich. Full stop.

For some reason, is cutting property taxes.

We live in irresponsible, selfish, moronic times.

andrew,
@andrew@esq.social avatar

@MarvinFreeman

Property tax has long been the least popular tax regime—for good reason, tbh. The policies are almost always a mess and create all kinds of inequities.

Not defending the general slashing of property taxes, but merely pointing out that it’s political chum. Bipartisan political chum.

Interesting! Thanks for the insight. I work with MA attorneys on the civil side (sales tax reassessment defense) pretty regularly but the stuff I work on doesn't go to trial all that often.

I am somewhat skeptical of the notion that we can yet know if there is truly no prejudicial effect -- seems like something we will only know with more data.

Every once in a while this happens, and I'm definitely not complaining, but over the last 3 days the daily downloads of Minimum Competence have been 4-5x the usual.

I often wonder if we're getting mentioned somewhere or something. The page views aren't up appreciably, so it seems like the listeners are coming in straight via the audio RSS feed.

Some aggregator featuring us maybe?

I don’t — I think my folks have to get it, right? I have to look into it formally. It’s been on my arms length todo list for a decade.
