Been at a conference in Baden-Baden in Germany this week. I travelled by train from the UK, and everyone thought I was mad. It’s not very much slower than flying and heck of a lot nicer (not to mention vastly less CO2). But it’s riskier: need to take five trains to get home.

kentindell,
@kentindell@mastodon.social avatar

2/5 trains done, about to do the third. A big shoutout to the Trainline app developers who think that they should store ticket details on the cloud where you have to have internet access to read them. Brilliant design decision, guys. Just brilliant. 👏

Also a shout out to the engineers who added the “forever spinner” mode to the vending machine. Did it take payment? Or not? Who knows? Check with your bank to find out! Special prizes* to be won!

*No actual prizes to be won. Other Terms and Conditions apply.

5/5 trains. The system worked!

No need to look up from your phone. Apple is trying to cure your motion sickness. - https://mashable.com/article/apple-vehicle-motion-sickness-settings "The dots move along with the motion of the phone or vehicle to reduce the aforementioned sensory conflict, shifting across the screen as a vehicle turns right or left or suddenly stops"

The 18th International CAN Conference on is over. It’s been a fantastic crunchy conference, with the very first talk on signal changes due to impedance mismatching - including a live explanation with cables being unplugged.

kentindell,
@kentindell@mastodon.social avatar

The discussions on the upcoming CAN XL were fascinating too. A talk by VW explained how for manufacturing reasons the bus has to work electrically with missing ECUs: during assembly a half built vehicle has to be partially operational. And yet still have low-cost cabling. This rules out a whole bunch of topologies.

kentindell,
@kentindell@mastodon.social avatar

There was also a talk from VW on CAN XL support in Linux, showing upstream Wireshark already has pcap and dissector support - including an impromptu live demo (I did say the conference was crunchy!).

kentindell,
@kentindell@mastodon.social avatar

@jerry507 Yep, stubs are a huge thing - I’ve seen some topologies where a “stub” is so long it should be called a bus!

Has anyone else had a spurious “Thanks for your request to cancel your Amazon account” notification? When you’ve got a unique password and 2FA set up, it’s hard to see how a request to delete could be raised. Could a rogue center operator at Amazon generate that request?

kentindell,
@kentindell@mastodon.social avatar

Also: Amazon account deletion nukes history, invoices, gift cards, music, e-books, audiobook purchases, everything. And there’s no ability to cancel an account deletion request: replying to the email confirms the request!

If you want to send a message to forensic investigators looking at why a car crashed, leave a message in the CAN bus. 32 bytes. In binary.

@pcawdron I read Rendezvous With Rama as a kid and loved it (wooden characters don’t matter much to kids, I think). Really looking forward to the movie.

This is following on the heels of GM’s announcement about Cruise. I think we are seeing the beginning of the end for the robotaxi autonomous vehicles bubble. https://www.reuters.com/business/autos-transportation/aptiv-beats-quarterly-profit-estimates-strong-demand-auto-parts-2024-01-31/

    @mintynet Based on who is advising the regime, I think that’s a legislative feature and not a bug.

    As you contemplate going home for the holidays, especially if you have any vocal MAGA relations, remember this coping strategy: Hear everything they say for what it is: from a brainwashed cult of millions who have been misled and manipulated. Do not attempt to deprogram, or you become just another enemy. Listen with patience, and try to find common things you both enjoy to talk about. Remind them of your humanity, and do things that let them remind you of theirs. That is how love ultimately prevails.

    @kentindell@mastodon.social avatar

    @georgetakei Or you could save a lot of time and effort and just cough in their unvaxxed faces.

    Just learned what the user interfaces in the SpaceX capsules run.

    The capsules that provide life support for people traveling into space and have to be absolutely reliable.

    The user interface that controls an explosion.

    Arrg!
    Never a good start to the day when your slow acting insulin decides it will not be slow, and drops your blood sugar to 2 in ten minutes flat.
    It is a good job I had not gone for my morning walk straight away as I’d be collapsed somewhere in Castle Meadows now.
    All good now, but it will mess up my levels all day I bet.
    Rare, but it has happened a couple of times before. My diabetic clinic did not seem to know of it being a thing. Anyone else had this? Ordinary glargine insulin.

    kentindell,
    @kentindell@mastodon.social avatar

    @revk Have you tried boiling your blood by reading crap from keyboard warriors who think “insulin” is a single thing?
