    I get you.

    I'm more a let's-get-this-over-with-soonest person.

    But, again, I get you.

    Almost over ...

    Big heap of laundry and some cleaning stuff. Way too much doom scrolling while the machines were running.

    Bought a new lens. So far, only in-house testing and "fingering" . Waiting for a bit of time and better weather.

    Catching up on "Critical Role" who I neglected over past weeks.

    New lens: Voigtländer Color-Skopar 18mm / F2.8 for my Fujifilm X-Pro 3. I was building a two-lens set for "normal" excursions which is now complete together with a Voigtländer Nokton 35mm / F1.2.

    Light, compact, good quality. And lots of fun, which encourages going out. 😉

    Oh, re: Doomscrolling ...

    Among so much else, this weekend, we host the Munich Security Conference. Fairly important. I try to keep up about the main speeches and panels.

    Did something similar in the past. Long time ago: Schlepping my Nikon D800 with f/2.8 zoom lenses. Heavy!

    Then my Olympus Pen E-P1/3/5 with zooms or lens set.

    These days, my set is getting smaller and lighter.

    That's one reason why I watch and read. Too often, there is doom without chances and options for proper re-action. Read up! Takes time, though.

    Some topics are sliding down painfully for the time being, though. (e.g. trans rights)

    Fortunately, there are options out there for anybody. No need for G.A.S., no need for continuous upgrade. Just get comfortable with your stuff and update when necessary (i.e. good arguments).

    I suppose it has to do in the first place with distinguishing between a public and a private space. The internet - fora, social spaces - is a public space, usually limited in the space you can use to express yourself. Anybody can chime in. Anybody can - wilfully or not - misunderstand. And misconstrue. So you remain careful, considerate, on your toes ...

    ... until you move to more private spaces, i.e. email or other closed channels. Or meeting in person.

    Bad experience.

    @ehqo @alexandra

    Doesn't always work, I fear. Context can be complex and lengthy - hard to get right over just a handful of short messages, which aren't always easily connectable, even for people doing a deep dive into my collected words.

    Also: How often do misunderstandings happen even in the immediate "physical world", even where you have a chance to put things right when you sense a failure in comms?

    Just saying: It's complicated.

    Bad AI. Bad pattern recognition. Bad, bad autobots,

    (But, then - it's serious and no laughing matter if you think this through ... 😠 )

    France for vacation?

    I'm sure you won't need any tips from me. Suffice to say, France has so much to offer, you will find new impressions wherever you go. (I second your sentiment re: Paris.)

    So: Great idea. 😎

    Pristine.

    I know, this is not an Edelweiss. But would you believe that I heard the song "Edelweiss" for the first time only a couple of weeks ago? "Sound of Music" simply isn't a thing in Germany / Austria.

    The internet is buzzing like a nest of angry hornets - concerning the release of the successor to the much hyped Fuji X100V (disclaimer: I own one) and to the X-Pro 3 (disclaimer: I own one). Not much reliable info is out yet, but many posts that - in fine print - advertise info but deliver only wishes. Wild ones, in part. A feeding frenzy.

    My take: I made a list with features which I like and which may be a deal or die for me. And I found there's not much why I should upgrade.

    kiwi2002,
    @kiwi2002@mstdn.social avatar

    @alexandra

    So true.

    But in the master's hand, when the eye has seen, the fine tool may give the extra boost.

    Well, as far as am concerned, I know my skills and my limits and my outlooks and I am happy with what I got. 🙂

    And: To everyone their thing. You just shouldn't let yourself be fooled over by artificial trends and clickbait. (That was my original thought when I had a look around at the interwebs. Not necessarily real life, though.)

    kiwi2002,
    @kiwi2002@mstdn.social avatar

    That. And one shouldn‘t let oneself be fooled otherwise.

    It's the standard signature for "Be right back." and "Other bird seed thiefs - back off!". 😏

    Plenty time to have some bird seed at hand by then.

    My mom used to put out whole nuts - uncracked, inside their shells. Unfortunately, the squirrels - after intense scrutiny of the nuts on offer - grabbed their selection and scaled down the walls again. Not much to see there ... munching their loot in splendid privacy.

    Squirrels manage. Birds usually don't. (Of course, there's the "drop 'em trick". But most birds don't know that one.)

    kiwi2002, to books
    @kiwi2002@mstdn.social avatar

    As I notice things ...

    Books don't stay available for buying forever. And, yes - this also applies for ebooks (less so, but it happens; especially in self-publishing).

    So, the point in time when to buy a certain book may become important.

    Then, in case of ebooks, we find more often the mode of "bundle offers". Another incentive to buy quickly and unplanned.

    What this comes down to: Budgeting for my own book buying is becoming a more ... "movable" quality.
