The whole server migration from past night turned out a little different then I wanted, in total I could only cut about 30-50 euros per month from the main server cost

I did had to upgrade since it does seem like we need the power :blobcatgiggle:

But.... it wasn't for nothing!

Currently we are "future proof" with the latest software, both front and backend. The previous server was literal 4 years old :catblush:

So a little costs cut plus a huge software improvement

Truly, I think I'm the luckiest person alive. Today's #WeblogPoMo2024 post is about how a chance meeting saved my life.

So happy to report that after receiving treatment, including x-rays, a CT scan and stitches to her nose, my mother in law was released from hospital and is recovering quietly at home this morning. As you can imagine, this fall gave us all a bit of a scare, so I’m leased to hear she hasn’t lost her sense of humour joking about slipping on a bar of soap. Which, by the way, she didn’t.

It’ll be a few days of recovery and, hopefully, no ... https://alexink.micro.blog/2024/05/17/so-happy-to.html

In an effort to lighten my mood today (worrying about the MiL) I've written a bit of a silly post today.

I just got a panicked call from my OH to tell me the mother in law has been rushed into hospital. It seems she had a terrible tumble while getting out of the bath, this morning, hit her head and broke her nose. She’s in her 80s. This is not good on any level. The poor woman managed to crawl to the phone and call my sister in law, who in turn called for an ambulance and then, rushed from her place of work not 10 minutes away (she works in ... https://alexink.micro.blog/2024/05/16/i-just-got.html

I gotta say.. it’s fucking scary to see the far right rise so fast in so many countries with such extremes

We have had 2 world wars with so many deaths that also started with such β€˜ideas’ and β€˜thoughts’, we cannot and may not let that happen ever again

Unfortunately I don’t have the answers but I really much wish we could find some common ground and cool down things before it gets even further out of hand

kiwi2002,
@kiwi2002@mstdn.social avatar

@stux

Just a random thought ... wars start when states fight against each other.

Today's rise of the far right appears rather to be about fighting the own population and those considered outsiders. (Exceptions apply.)

Thesis: No state would have fought against the Third Reich and their crimes against their own population if the Reich hadn't waged war against their neighbours and victims abroad.

Else: You're right, of course.

Enjoying a Life of Crime!
Ah, I love Monday evening TV which, tonight, consists of:

Brokenwood Mysteries β€” a police series set in New Zealand
The Vanishing Triangle β€” a true story of a serial killer set in Ireland
Harry Wild β€” a PI series also set in Ireland

I love Acorn TV for the choice of shows offered from all over the world. Which includes lots of murder-mysteries, police dramas, and all things crime. https://acorn.tv/brokenwoodmysteries

Intriguing analysis of Asimov’s Foundation trilogy and its central flaw.

From M. Keith Booker’s Monsters, Mushroom Clouds, and the Cold War: American Science Fiction and the Roots of Postmodernism, 1946-1964 (2001)

kiwi2002,
@kiwi2002@mstdn.social avatar

@SFRuminations

I'm not so sure ...

Certainly, SF is a play with "what if?", not what will be. In service to this question, it might even stretch theory a bit - it makes you think. It does not need to be true in the strictest sense.

Second, I am also not sure that "historical process" as mentioned in the critique is as clear cut as it's made out to be. We are still learning about variants from the past which would not fit models of, say, twenty years ago.

Third, I enjoyed reading Asimov. πŸ™‚

kiwi2002,
@kiwi2002@mstdn.social avatar

@SFRuminations

Precisely that's the "what if".

Together with the (not to be dismissed) disturbance by the "mule factor".

I’m sorry there was no Marginalia post yesterday, as promised, as I was as sick as a dog.

I’m inconsolable at the moment, as it seems most of the third party apps on my iPhone 4 have stopped working or, at least, they’re not opening and I don’t know why. I mean come on …

I’m especially bummed because I can’t access my faithful app, Pocket Money, which I use to keep track of day to day expenditure. It’s so frustrating. It worked perfectly last weekend and now?

Any suggestions anyone?

kiwi2002,
@kiwi2002@mstdn.social avatar

@alexandra

There's a note about an update to the app and incompatibility with older versions / iOS versions. That an issue? (The new version is still supported in the AppStore.) Contact to developer? Possibly restore from backup?

Trick of an old physicist: Power down completely. Start cold.

My two cents from far, far away.

kiwi2002,
@kiwi2002@mstdn.social avatar

@alexandra

There may be an issue if you had updated the app recently > incompatibility risk which I mentioned.

kiwi2002,
@kiwi2002@mstdn.social avatar

@alexandra

Understandably.

Did power down / up help?

Is restoring from a backup an option for you? (It might not if the last backup is too old because: data) What is your iOS version?

Can you download your old app version (which version is it?) from the AppStore, or is it not available anymore?

Do you by any chance have a current backup of just the Pocket Money data?

Had snow today. Didn't survive contact with the ground, though, although 1Β°C.

Too many green leaves and blossoms out there already to deal with the mechanics of heavy loads of wet snow.

I’ve been looking for another post to write over on my Marginalia micro.blog and then saw over on Michael Burkhardt’s blog that he was thinking of participating in Anne Sturdivant upcoming Weblog Posting Month. And ping, I had an ah-ha moment. Here was my opportunity, I thought, to pick a theme or topic and commit to writing a post a day throughout the month of May.

Of course, the question then becomes, what theme, what topic, ... https://marginalia.micro.blog/2024/04/22/ive-been-looking.html
