So that post about most marine life dying in the next 20 years... it really got to me. I already know billionaires won't do shit, so I'm starting to wonder if ANYTHING I do will make any sense. Society will most probably collapse in the next 50 years along with most fauna on Earth... so what use is working in my novel? There won't be anyone left to read it.

Depression is hitting again.

Someone please give me hope 😢

Let's shine another light on this ... (Apart from the DoooooM.)

I'd like my text to be something a reader engages with. Preferably something a reader and I may engage over. Every exchange my text may engender is a good thing. (Yes - even honest criticism. No - I don't count trolls.) This is something I would like to see in my lifetime.

I don't know your age. You can do the math.

But this engagement - it's worth working for.

Don't you think?

    A solid list, thank you.

With a smile, I acknowledge I've read all of them, but I was drawn in first by different books than your selection. Serendipity, I suppose - whatever comes across your way first.

I read Howey's three books when they came out, and I quite liked them. Do you know them? How does the series compare?

Thunderstorms approaching ... bringing long awaited rain, but too little overall, really. ☔ Too much for a short period of time.
    And hail stones. Brrr.

    Reading back to childhood...and compare.

L.Frank Baum's "The Wizard of Oz" vis-á-vis: In 1939, Russian author Alexander Wolkow took Baum's story and, as he stated in the preface, liked it very much, but wanted to rephrase the story, taking what he liked from Baum and doing some stuff of his own, too.

I got the Wolkow books via relatives in the former GDR a long time ago.

The comparison is quite interesting, especially since the differences are not where you would expect them to be.

Cover of Baum: The Wizard of Oz A landscape, yellow brick road below, blue sky above. The adventurers are walking along the road from left to right, almost dancing. The scarecrow. The tin man, whistling, axe over his shoulder. Dorothy in her blue dress and the rose bonnet, pointing her stretched hand to the right. The giant lion in the back.

Was a time when I traveled frequently to the US ...

(Not to miss the point: There are people who have to live there and who can't simply travel away.)

I've been wondering ... what is it about the inspiring banner behind your avatar? What's the story? Why does the astronaut have the helmet on?

    I like it.

We’re back from the botanic gardens, after being blown all over the place. The wind steadfastly refuses to calm down. But, that aside, I went crazy and took, well, probably a couple of hundred photos of peonies. These are one of my favourite flowers because they’re so glorious in colour and variety.

So excuse me over the next few days if I inundate everyone’s time line with a slew of photos.

    Flood Update:

The maintenance guy just turned up (now) to inspect the leak in our bathroom and, is confused. As, apparently, the flood in the corridor is from the apartment opposite us (go figure). But our leak? Is coming from upstairs somewhere. Yeah, honey, like we figured that one out for ourselves.

So he’s gone off to check upstairs. Oh, and the onsite plumber is in the apartment opposite.

How many idiots does it take to solve a leak?

    Yeah, you tell me …

Puh ... hope everything's going to turn out fine. Have my own experience with flat floods and the ensuing damage.

As long as it will not result in this ... :

    Take care. Chins up.

There is still information you only can find "over there", but it's getting worse and worse.

Mastodon is developing nicely, overall, I think.

Did an "experiment" of sorts over the weekend: Visited a place online (Google Maps, etc.) where I spent some time twenty, thirty years back and have fond memories of.

    Seattle, in this case.

I was still able to find my ways - sort of. But most of the places I used to hang out at, streets, shops ... they have either relocated or don't exist anymore. All I have now are fond memories (+ stuff I bought back then).

My advice: Document in time! Photos, diary, scraps.

Two today. 🤓 (Amongst: Aliette de Bodard: The Red Scholar's Wake) Still waiting for the new Stina Leicht "Loki's Ring" to come out over here. Licence problems?)

As we already noticed: Start of the month = replenish the stack.

    Enjoy your day.

Had my regular check-up with my dentist. (Visits I absolutely fear and hate. But I perform them religiously. For reasons.) Everything checked out fine. Thank you.

    Except:

"Maybe you'd want to stop gnashing your teeth."

I look around me, what's going on. And I feel my jaw muscles starting to cramp up again.

(Fortunately, I've learned and trained myself not to growl at the same time.)
