lemmefixdat4u,

The problem is not that Trump is under felony indictment. It’s not that he’s a liar, a cheater, a misogynist, narcissist, and elitist. It’s that, knowing this, a lot of people STILL support him for our nation’s top office. That’s how screwed up our populace has become. That’s the problem.

FTC bans most noncompete agreements between employers and workers (www.npr.org)

The FTC estimates about 30 million people, or one in five American workers, from minimum wage earners to CEOs, are bound by noncompetes. It says the policy change could lead to increased wages totaling nearly $300 billion per year by encouraging people to swap jobs freely.

lemmefixdat4u,

This might get voted down, but y’all should hear the counterpoint. My friend requires new hires to sign a NC that expires after 2 years. It basically says the employee may not work for another company using the same equipment unless they pay him the $3000 it costs him to get them certified. Before he did that, some employees would jump to a competitor shortly after completing the training. Now he’s wondering if he can make the $3000 an employee loan that will be forgiven after 2 years of employment.

And no, he doesn’t do the NC if the new employee was already certified. He just wants to protect his investment in their training.

This change in the law will have consequences in businesses where employees require special certifications or training for a high demand specialty. Will an auto repair shop be willing to train an employee to service EVs if they can’t guarantee the employee will remain with the shop?

lemmefixdat4u,

I understand there’s a lot of abuse, but for some specialties there just aren’t enough trained workers. This change is going to make employers think hard about things like diesel mechanic certifications and IT certifications. And like my friend, they’ll turn to making workplace loans for the cost.

lemmefixdat4u,

I wonder if Khamenei senses the end is near and is clearing the path for succession of his son, Mojtaba. Raisi was the other likely candidate to become Supreme Leader.

lemmefixdat4u,

But it’s OK. God told them to do it. God is OK with genocide against enemies of the faith. Says so in the Bible. 1 Samuel 15, Ezekiel 9, Numbers 31, Deuteronomy 20 /s

How to intentionally get terminated from a job without sacrificing unemployment benefits?

My friend is a customer service rep who is ready to retire. Her company is talking about layoffs with 13+ weeks of severance, but when she asked (anonymously) if they were accepting volunteers, they said no. In case she’s not one of the ones told to clean out her desk, what are the ways she could get terminated while...

Do you leave a tip for housekeeping if you're only staying one night in a hotel?

Is it a ‘thank you for prepping my room’ or ‘please clean my room today’? If you tip post cleaning, it’s likely going to someone else the next day. Many hotels now only do housekeeping on demand. How do employees feel about this - do they miss the tips or are they happy for a less stressful workday?...

lemmefixdat4u,

On multi-night stays I tip if I want anything special, like extra coffee, or when my drunk friend destroyed the toilet. The only time I tip when leaving the hotel is if the housekeeper did something above and beyond normal expectations. Like when my wife started early and soiled the sheets. Left a note apologizing, a $20, and just expected fresh sheets. Nope. She replaced all the bedding and the mattress too. Left her another $20 and a thank you note when we checked out.

Thinking about buying more storage. Warn me of the lemons!

Anyone got any recommendations or warnings about specific hdd / ssd / storage brands or models at the moment? Thinking about buying another drive instead of being smart and cleaning up my files. I've been pretty happy with Samsung but I've heard they had a clunker of a drive with high failure rates lately. HDD, SSD and I think I...

lemmefixdat4u,

If data reliability is high on your list, but speed is not, use a NAS running RAID 1 (mirrored drives), so one drive can fail without compromising the data.

I used to do RAID 5 on an 8 drive array, but had a failure of the NAS motherboard. And wouldn’t you know it, they didn’t make that model anymore. No easy way to get the data back out of the RAID. I finally paid to recover the data, but learned my lesson. It’s MUCH cheaper to buy duplicate drives than it is to recover data later. If the RAID motherboard failed tomorrow, I would pop the working drive in my computer and it would just work.

Using drive mirroring pretty much eliminates the concern over premature drive failure. If it’s in warranty, pop out the bad drive and send it in for repair/replacement. The NAS will still work. Buy another drive or wait with sweaty palms until the faulty drive is fixed. Rebuild the array.

lemmefixdat4u,

I bought a 22KW propane generator. It’s supposed to be plumbed to a large tank, but due to the pandemic I could not get the 500 gallon tank plumbing installed (county permit office was issuing for “emergencies only”). So I tried a 20# cylinder. It iced up after 6 minutes and the generator stalled shortly after. So I bought a 100# tank. That ran for 5 hours until the generator stalled. The tank was still 1/3 full.

What’s happening is that there’s insufficient area for heat transfer. The propane has to vaporize, so it draws heat from the part of the tank in contact with the liquid. The environment provides that heat, but in a small 20# tank there’s not enough surface area to transfer the amount of heat needed to vaporize the quantity of propane required by the generator. The propane stops vaporizing once its temperature drops below the boiling point, and the generator starves. The 100# tank has the same problem when the propane level drops, reducing the surface area in contact with the liquid propane. In the large horizontal tanks, the propane is in contact with a large surface area, and the tank is supported off the ground to provide good air circulation.

Your options are to buy a bigger tank or provide more heat to the small tank. What worked for me was an old washtub filled with water. I put the tank in it, then left the garden hose trickling water into the tub to keep the water from freezing.

If you do opt for a large tank, buy a reconditioned one. They’re half the price of new and last about as long because older tanks were made with thicker steel. Buying will save you money because you’re free to buy from the cheapest supplier. Buy your propane in the summer when the price is low. Get a tank big enough enough to last the whole year. When you lease a tank, the leasing company is the only one that can fill it, so you won’t be able to shop around for the cheapest price. Mine paid for itself in 2 fills (compared my bills with my neighbor who leases their tank).

lemmefixdat4u,

If you can get your doctor to prescribe noise cancelling earphones to help you sleep, they can be bought using money from an FSA or HSA.

lemmefixdat4u,

Clean the contacts inside the case or maybe adjust them with a pin. Make sure the buds fit snugly in the case. Had a pair of bluetooth buds that had a similar problem, and it was because one contact was barely touching when the buds were in the case. Any jiggling of the case would make the bud think it was being removed.

Why does Sync not display some comments?

I’ve posted something today and somehow Sync gives me notifications in my inbox for replies to that post, but when I open the post, it can’t find any. I can interact with them just fine in the inbox and in the browser. But in Sync on the post, the number of replies is shown to be 4, while the comment section states that no...

lemmefixdat4u,

I also see this. The only way I can see the missing comments is by sharing the link to a web browser. Then the missing comments can be read in the browser.

Another variation of this issue is when a comment has collapsed replies. For instance, I see “3 replies” beneath a comment. When I tap it, it disappears, but no replies are shown. Again, I can read them if I share the link to the thread to a browser.

Rescuers struggle to find helicopter carrying Iranian president (live updates) (www.washingtonpost.com)

A helicopter carrying Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi** **crashed in foggy weather Sunday, according to state-run media, which said Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian and other officials were also on board. Their condition is not yet known, and the helicopter has not been found.

lemmefixdat4u,

Looks like Iran’s Supreme Leader, Khamenei, wants to make sure only his son, Mojtaba, will succeed him. Raisi was the other likely candidate. Took a page out of Putin’s playbook.

lemmefixdat4u,

One independent source of true random numbers with timestamps:

csrc.nist.gov/Projects/…/beacon-20

lemmefixdat4u,

If the random number comes from an event beyond the control of the group or server, why not? For example, many Keno games post results online. It is agreed by all parties that when the server says, “flip”, the next number generated by the Keno game will have modulus 2 applied to it (even or odd), resulting in the coin flip - 0 for tails and 1 for heads. Everyone can see the source of the number independent of the server and no party has control over the source of the number.

Alternately, any independent source of true random numbers that are time stamped can be used. The agreement is that the server will specify a time in the future and the number generated closest to that time will be used. The number is independently verifiable and out of the control of all parties.

lemmefixdat4u,

It’s $210 a month plus $30 in taxes and fees for 400 mbit internet with a 1.2 TB usage cap and a mid-tier programming package renting one cable box (required) and one cablecard for the Tivo box. Some months I exceed my internet cap and have to pay $10 for every 50 GB over the limit. Welcome to California living.

lemmefixdat4u,

No gold. It’s what they charge us privileged Californians.

lemmefixdat4u,

Remember when TV used to be free, except that you had to watch commercials? I pay $2800 a year to this company for Internet and TV - and I still have to watch commercials. What’s wrong with this picture?

lemmefixdat4u,

Covering my cough or sneeze with my shirt collar.

lemmefixdat4u,

Sandwich bag full of shit placed in your shorts 2-6 hours from now. Then sit down firmly.

Or talk to the homeless guy in Walmart. He seems to have this one down pat.

lemmefixdat4u,

This. Absolute game changer. If my job gave me the money they spend on my behalf for the crappy health insurance they provide, it would likely result in an actual increase in my net pay after the increased taxes to pay for the program. Cut out hundreds of thousands of parasitic middlemen, like insurers and pharmacy benefit managers. Throw out the crazy quilt of non-doctors who decide what medications and procedures are are covered. Reduce billing staff because of the major paperwork reduction (don’t need to deal with hundreds of different insurance plans). And do away with coding - the letters and numbers on a bill that can drastically change a procedure’s cost to the patient.

lemmefixdat4u,

You mean like the way sweeping swiping figures out the words? And what do you do when trying to type out a password? Does it revert to a normal keyboard or function like T9 keyboard with multiple presses to select the right character?

lemmefixdat4u,

Give it to a retirement home. Seriously. Us old farts still like playing those old games. I was not happy when my granddaughter used my Mario Cart disk for a teething ring.

lemmefixdat4u,

If only I could pay for my groceries/gas/utilities/taxes/loans with crypto. Alas! I have to convert it back into fiat currency first.
