lemmyreader,

I have WayDroid running here with Arch Linux and GNOME without VirtualBox or QEMU. For Arch it requires the zen kernel, or compiling the kernel yourself. wiki.archlinux.org/title/Waydroid In the past I had no luck with WayDroid on I think Ubuntu, Debian and what not.

lemmyreader,

Lately I feel more urge to perform more OpenBSD installations. These beautiful images (thank you!) do have its subtle effects :)

And for further man…datory reading : man.openbsd.org/OpenBSD-6.9/sndiod.8

lemmyreader,

It makes sense to install a Desktop Environment during the installation. If you install a really bare-boned Linux installation without DE you might even end up without a graphical display manager to login making things complicated for a new Linux user.

lemmyreader,

Okay, good :) You can try for yourself. Install bare-boned Linux, and then install for example fvwm, a light weight Window Manager. Fair chance that for example on Debian you will have to figure out which more packages (e.g. xinit and xorg and fonts) to install to make the GUI work. I like Debian for reasons, but the software package dependencies are not always on par with the package installations is my experience.

lemmyreader,

Several Linux distributions, like Arch Linux and Debian have so-called meta packages to install or remove a DE. For example on Arch Linux the command pacman -S cinnamon would install the Cinnamon DE. Or on Debian installing the XFCE4 DE : apt install xfce4

Linux 6.10 To Merge NTSYNC Driver For Emulating Windows NT Synchronization Primitives (www.phoronix.com)

Going through my usual scanning of all the “-next” Git subsystem branches of new code set to be introduced for the next Linux kernel merge window, a very notable addition was just queued up… Linux 6.10 is set to merge the NTSYNC driver for emulating the Microsoft Windows NT synchronization primitives within the kernel for...

lemmyreader,

2024, the most memorable year of Linux gaming so far :-)

lemmyreader,

If your real SMTP server is doing fine, nullmailer is possibly the simplest of all smtp relay packages available.

lemmyreader,

Personally I’ve stopped trying to get people to use open source software or Linux if they don’t seem really interested. That saves me time, and that saves them time as well. I’ve seen several people being somewhat interested but going back to Microsoft or Google products after some time. Regardless of that, if they are open to testing Linux on an old laptop, why not show them a few Linux distribution by means of Ventoy ?

The State of Software Supply Chain Security in 2024 | JFrog (jfrog.com)

This blog post was posted two days before the discovery of the XZ utils backdoor. It shows the increasing popularity of Docker and NPM. Rust is not in this preview of their report, but all the crates used for compiling a Rust program bring in dependencies. Years ago, xkcd showed the problem already....

lemmyreader,

Great comic, and text, thank you. And it is not only this. People want happiness and pleasure but not pain, and those two are sides of the same coin. Learning to be content with what you have can bring great joy.

lemmyreader,

Right. After posting this I saw the blog post by jfrog, which seems to do a very good job : jfrog.com/…/xz-backdoor-attack-cve-2024-3094-all-…

lemmyreader,

I still don’t understand how it got through the firewall though.

In the past I have followed howtos on the Internet about blocking a single IP address with iptables or for that matter ufw, and failed :(

lemmyreader,

😀 After seeing the comic for the first time I thought that the “UNIX” ™ person simply could have gone for tar --help or tar --version as valid command to show off their “UNIX” skills and save all.

lemmyreader,

The auto suggestion from Fish shell is something I cannot live without anymore. Saves me so much time and avoiding typos. Not sure if zsh can do the same, maybe with a plugin ? If so, I’d like to hear about it. I use zsh for a few things, besides bash and fish to keep their history apart.

lemmyreader,

Interesting question. No answer, but I’d buy a few of these keys, and see whether they act different.

lemmyreader,

What’s more, swapping MS for Google is probably worse from a privacy point of view :(
