Update available! This version is very old.

Xscreensaver has apparently been checking for updates and is disappointed that it hasn't had one for 14 months because Debian is too stable. Can anyone recommend a linux screensaver which would work with xfce and can be trusted to never do that?

lemmyreader,

Well, if you read some more of jwz’s blog posts about the horrible security bugs that others have added while creating derivatives of Xscreensaver you might think twice before doing so. www.jwz.org/blog/…/i-told-you-so-2021-edition For me a screensaver is no longer about trying to prevent dead pixels (or something like that) but being able to safely lock the screen when being away from it for a while.

    The fediverse is amazing!

I can’t get over how cool it is to view my posts from any server. I’m definitely going to use activitypub for my social media I’m planning on making. I was going to use @Discourse , but considering it’s like where you are only able to self host and each instance of discourse can’t interconnect makes me kinda sad. But activitypub seems like the only way I feel happy in both ways.

    lemmyreader,

The OP posted from Mastodon (check their profile) hence the hashtags.

    lemmyreader,

    Hi @InternetIsScary

Also, do most people know of this on fediverse? Jw

Some people noticed earlier posts from Mastodon to Lemmy and thought it was cool. Guess it is a matter of getting used to for others 🙂

    👍 Yeah, I missed that 😐

Decided to test some browser fingerprinting this morning via the Cover Your Tracks tool by @eff. @brave, @librewolf, and (no surprise) @torproject all performed (or appeard to perform) better than @mullvadnet.

    lemmyreader,

Thanks for sharing CreepJS. Agreed on JavaScript. I’m a fan of LibreJS filling in a gap after uMatrix was discontinued.

    lemmyreader,

Dunno. I like uBlock Origin a lot but disabling scripts per site is not something that feels very comfortable for me. With LibreJS it can be quite a hassle but I’m already quite used to that, and on the way I kind of learn things. Like that blocking scripts about Apple and Google logins at Twitter with LibreJS helps with clutter free reading and not being asked to login.

I’m trying @librewolf browser and it might seem like a small thing to you all, but they went out of their way to preserve accessibility features for disabled users like myself, whereas other privacy solutions remove accessibility features completely, and their efforts to make sure disabled users have a private focused but accessible browser is more welcome than you can imagine because disabled people need privacy as well. I would argue that disabled people need privacy more. I wish more advocates took accessibility and disability into account the way they have currently. I hope this remains a core mission of theirs

    lemmyreader,

    Cool!

What should I add to my '90s website?

So I'm currently toying around with NeoCities, and decided to trial it by building your classic mid '90s Geocities/Tripod/Angelfire pastiche website.

Some of the most important elements are already in place.

Tile background? Large font? Heading in bright pink with a shadow? Unusual colour choices? Random cat gifs? Under construction gif? Check! Check! Check!

In the true spirit of the '90s DIY web, some more pages (including the links page) are coming soon.

(I'm thinking of adding a page dedicated to either Britney or a nu-metal band.)

You can see the page so far here: https://that90ssite.neocities.org/

There are a few things that I want to add to make it complete, and I'm looking for suggestions.

The first, is to embed a midi file that plays automatically. Any suggestions on the best way of doing this?

Second, it's just not going to be complete without a guestbook.

    Third, any webring suggestions?

Fourth, what's the best way of adding a java chat room in 2024?

Finally, anything else that really needs to be a part of a great '90s website?

UPDATE: Thanks for all the feedback! I've added more annoying GIFs, a guestbook, a links page, and a cyber cat hangout.

UPDATE 2: And added even more gifs, an amazing Amiga demo, and a ton of links.

    @asklemmy

    lemmyreader,

    😀

    lemmyreader,

Nice project. I like the nostalgia. 👍

After some searching I learned that Tripod and Angelfire still exist today as web hosting providers. Your page could have a few more Under construction signs here and there.

Apparently my love language is installing @linux on the laptops of people I really care about.

    lemmyreader,

These days installing Linux and upgrading it is easier than it was years ago. Installing Linux can be a good deed indeed :)
