Didn’t know that Misskey forks have this Pages feature. Found this darnell.day/hey-tumblr-and-medium-fediverse-lover… which explains a bit about it. Is Misskey still actively developed ? Is there an overview of the forks ?

Thanks. Nice. Been meaning to try Bedrock Linux before but figured it could be time consuming. Good that you mention Distrobox. Have played with Distrobox a few times, I like it although with one user the usage of the same files in $HOME was a bit confusing at first.

Happened to me as well today. Except that I didn’t wait for that long but opened a new browser tab and saw that the post was posted. Closed the other tab which, slightly surprising, gave no warning.

Easily find program name from context menu/without terminal?

I occasionally need to know the names of programs. I asked here about “Run as Administrator” being added to the context menu (like in Windows), and the response was basically “can’t be easily done”. an example is if I wish to edit a config file it cannot be done without accessing the terminal. Knowing the name...

With ubuntu default options, “Text Editor” (in the GUI menu), is “gedit” for example. “File Browser” is “Nautilus”. These things are actually not easy to learn if you aren’t deep into the Linux world.

Agreed. That is unfortunately the way GNOME Desktop Environment has been going since years. For example Epiphany web browser is now known as “Web”. Not only that, GNOME started to remove window buttons like Maximize. With GNOME tweaks tool these window buttons can be enabled again, but I personally don’t find the GNOME changes a huge improvement.

In the spirit of these kinds of changes, I’d love to hear some honest Linux distribution recommendations. I’m leaning towards Ubuntu because it is the most widely advertised and UX focused from my perspective. But I’ve also heard good things about Arch. Any others I should be considering?

Depends on your needs and preferences. If you want an easy Linux distribution Linux Mint is a good choice. Arch Linux is indeed good but default Arch is not that suitable for new Linux users unless you’re willing to read documentation. You can go for Garuda or EndeavourOS to have Arch with easy installers and GUI.

Go to hell Mozilla. I couldn’t care less if your browser fails at this point.

I share this sentiment to some point. Mozilla taking millions from Google, and making it difficult for users to DeGoogle or remove the sponsored shortcuts from their Firefox browser. But hard forking Firefox will not be a light weight task for a new project to take on for a long time. I hope the stronger pushing of ads by Google in the Chrome/Chromium browser will make some more people switch back to Firefox.

I dont think Mozilla makes degoogling hard. It is very easy to keep track of the changes and simply flip some switches.

Some switched ? Have you checked all the connections a Firefox browser makes ? In case you didn’t know Mozilla push notifications is hosted on a Google server.

Maybe the firefox developers don’t know where to go to, or it would be inconvenient for them to leave. Maybe they just need a new home at a new foundation, that makes it easy and compelling for them to switch. But the death of Mozilla would be a very compelling reason for them to switch.

I sincerely hope you’re right, and we’ll see a new and truly privacy friendly Firefox, and the decay of Google Chrome.

You already answered this in your question description :) With a touchscreen laptop and Linux and WayDroid you can have a Linux tablet. (Unfortunately (?) the choice of a DeGoogle ROM for Android tablets is minimal and you never know when the ROM developer will buy a new phone, change their life priorities and drop the ROM development) Compared to an Android phone you’d have a much larger screen. What do I use WayDroid for personally ? Just to test some programs, to see what’s new in F-Droid, and sometimes use LibreTube.

I keep reading for 2fa or my passwords but that’s not really a reason IMO. Why not just have a copy of your totp seeds (any good android totp manager should let you export) and then use a desktop manager like keepassxc, the same with your passwords.

Well, you know, some people use more than one computer. Having WayDroid + 2FA codes on one laptop, and filling in the codes on a browser on the other laptop does not defeat the idea of strictly using two different devices for 2FA.

No i get people use more than one computer but I don’t understand your point though about using wayDroid specifically vs a desktop totp manager? You can achieve the same by just having your totp seeds on one computer and manually filling it in on the other. Only difference is no android application needed just a standalone desktop totp manager

Right, I see your point. Now, I don’t see myself clicking on a touchscreen laptop with KeePassXC to get TOTP codes. Seems easier to use Aegis app in WayDroid.

As far as I know Signal still requires a phone number to register an account. Since a while you can use usernames to connect with others instead of exchanging phone numbers.
