lemmyreader,

Cool. Good suggestion.

lemmyreader,

That one is maybe the easiest to do :

express your gratitude to the maintainers

Besides that there is the possibility to donate. And since the xz backdoor incident I would say it makes sense to keep an eye on end users trying to bully or overload developers. If I remember well I read that the developer of uMatrix stopped with that project because of annoying users filing bug reports with unfriendly and demanding discourse, which can be exhausting for a sole developer.

Google Podcasts is gone — and so is my faith in Google (www.theverge.com)

The Podcasts app is just the latest product to go through a process I’ve come to call The Google Cycle. It always goes the same way: the company launches a new service with grandiose language about how this fits its mission of organizing and making accessible the world’s information, quickly updates it with a couple of neat...

lemmyreader,

I fear it is like with WhatsApp : “But all my friends are on Discord so I have no choice!”.

Emma Thompson and Greta Thunberg among critics of Shell’s Greenpeace case (www.theguardian.com)

More than 30 public figures including Emma Thompson, Imelda Staunton and Greta Thunberg have written to Shell criticising its “callous and vindictive” lawsuit against Greenpeace after activists occupied a moving oil platform last year....

lemmyreader,

There is a difference between making money to survive as a human being and going for profit at all costs. After Shell and Exxon ignored the risks in Groningen for years, they recently wanted money from the Dutch government. reuters.com/…/dutch-govt-shell-exxon-ignored-gron…

lemmyreader,

OMG. Is money the only thing that Shell has on their mind ?

lemmyreader,

This seems rather harmless. In the past people have been posting photos of Windows running on ATM cash machines 🫣

lemmyreader,

That mail client, lttrs, made by the developer of XMMP app Conversations, looks like a proof of concept to me rather than a full fledged email client. I’ve tested it with stalw.art mail server, which supports JMAP and it was not a piece of cake to make it all work together. Stalwart is more difficult to install and configure than Yunohost but it is expected to have an admin interface in a few months time. I have the impression that it would be possible to run Yunohost and Stalwart on the same server if you use non default ports for Stalwart.

lemmyreader,

With uBlock Origin you can go Easy Medium and Hard mode github.com/gorhill/uBlock/wiki/Blocking-mode and also set your blocking preferences per site.

Apples4Ceasefire: Apple Employees Request Ceasefire Recognition (www.apples4ceasefire.com)

"We, current and previous employees of Apple Inc., wish to express our disappointment and shock at the lack of care and understanding this company has given the Palestinian community, not only abroad suffering in Gaza, but also towards our own team members and anyone who supports them within our stores and offices. "

lemmyreader,

Really ? You did do your part a while back when Linus had to stay home for a few days during the snow storm, right ? Right ? :D

lemmyreader,

Daisuke fixed a 22-year old bug and we now prevent passwords in URLs from being saved in history!

Interesting.

Tried Arch for the first time | My experience and impressions (lemmy.ml)

I used linux intermittently in the last 15 or so years, migrating from early Ubuntu versions, to Manjaro, Pop!_OS, Debian, etc. And decided to give Arch a try just recently; with all the memes around its high entry point, I was really expecting to struggle for a long time to set it up just as I want....

lemmyreader,

PS. “but what about GIMP, or Krita, or Inkscape, or OpenOffice, or using rsync for cloud storage, or <YOUR_FAVORITE_TOOL>?” you may ask. Trust me, I tried it all. Every last presentation, raster/vector graphics software out there. Regardless of how much I hate Adobe, their software is top tier, and until GIMP becomes the Blender of graphic design, I can’t really rely use it for most of my purposes :(

The Trust me, I tried it all. and mentioning OpenOffice in one paragraph doesn’t feel quite right. OpenOffice is obsolete. Instead there is ONLYOFFICE and LibreOffice as open source choices for Linux users, available as Flatpak, Snap and probably AppImage.

lemmyreader,

Actually, one other thing I should have mentioned, is that I also transited from using Premiere Pro to Kdenlive (and sometimes even Blender for very light video editing). Kdenlive is an amazing success story for KDE, hope that happens to Krita as well.

Awesome.

lemmyreader,

Okay. Your Arch Linux review ends with naming your favorite options which include Proton, Microsoft and Adobe. As you don’t seem to mind using closed source software, did you have a look at WPS Office (Some Linux distributions include this), SoftMaker Office (Available for Linux and Android), Zoho Office ?

As for The GIMP (People have complained about its project name, but developers refused any changes) : From what I read Krita and Inkscape seem more promising. Krita has David Revoy as open source advocate, vocal on Mastodon : www.davidrevoy.com

lemmyreader,

Hmmm, I’m increasingly wary of FOSS software as well.

Depends on the license a project uses. GPL should be fine to prevent corporate exploitation.

sfconservancy.org/news/2022/…/vizio-remand-win/

The Software Freedom Conservancy lawsuit alleges that Vizio’s TV products, built on its SmartCast system, contain software that Vizio unfairly appropriated from a community of developers who intended consumers to have very specific rights to modify, improve, share, and reinstall modified versions of the software.

According to the lawsuit, a consumer of a product such as this has the right to access the source code so that it can be modified, studied, and redistributed (under the appropriate license conditions).
