lemmyreader,

Unlike Microsoft, Apple doesn’t use software activation and things like “The OEM license is married to the motherboard”. If you have an Apple computer, you can wipe MacOS, install Linux, and then download MacOS for free from Apple into your emulator software on Linux and Apple would have no reason to bother you. And OS updates are for free. Things are different when you use non Apple hardware and install MacOS.

VMWare black screen after installing all updates with Fedora Linux

So I’m trying to play around with Fedora in a VM with VMWare Workstation Player (v17.5.1) but I’m running into a problem I don’t know how to solve. I use the Fedora 39 1.5 ISO file which is the most current version that’s available for download and after installing it in the VM everything works fine. I setup the install...

What should I add to my '90s website?

So I'm currently toying around with NeoCities, and decided to trial it by building your classic mid '90s Geocities/Tripod/Angelfire pastiche website.

Some of the most important elements are already in place.

Tile background? Large font? Heading in bright pink with a shadow? Unusual colour choices? Random cat gifs? Under construction gif? Check! Check! Check!

In the true spirit of the '90s DIY web, some more pages (including the links page) are coming soon.

(I'm thinking of adding a page dedicated to either Britney or a nu-metal band.)

You can see the page so far here: https://that90ssite.neocities.org/

There are a few things that I want to add to make it complete, and I'm looking for suggestions.

The first, is to embed a midi file that plays automatically. Any suggestions on the best way of doing this?

Second, it's just not going to be complete without a guestbook.

Third, any webring suggestions?

Fourth, what's the best way of adding a java chat room in 2024?

Finally, anything else that really needs to be a part of a great '90s website?

UPDATE: Thanks for all the feedback! I've added more annoying GIFs, a guestbook, a links page, and a cyber cat hangout.

UPDATE 2: And added even more gifs, an amazing Amiga demo, and a ton of links.

lemmyreader,

😀

lemmyreader,

Nice project. I like the nostalgia. 👍

After some searching I learned that Tripod and Angelfire still exist today as web hosting providers. Your page could have a few more Under construction signs here and there.

lemmyreader,

Thanks OP, good job. Upvoted and bookmarked.

FOSS alternatives to document scanner

I need help finding an alternative for a tool like Adobe scan to scan documents and make PDFs out of them. I’ve tried out OpenScan, while it is decent, the scanner doesn’t recognize the page boundaries that well, and adding new pages requires quite a few clicks, which makes scanning long documents cumbersome. Any help is...

Simple-scan does scanning to PDF out of the box. Scan in ten pages and you have them saved all in one PDF file. It can rotate pages as well. Installable as package for Ubuntu, Debian and Arch and probably more.

Get yourself an ssh account somewhere, maybe here : sdf.org or here tildeverse.org and use screen or tmux to keep your IRC client session alive, so you can scroll back to older messages. Make sure to adjust the screen scroll back buffer if needed : baeldung.com/…/scrollback-buffer-screen-session

    lemmyreader,

Every software started with 0 reviews, by a no-name developer, with only 1 installs.

    Apple (slrpnk.net)

I don’t care if anyone has a Xiaomi, Oneplus, Samsung, etc. Each brand is using a modified version of Android, and they chose to be compatible with each other. But for example the “blue vs green bubble” drama is a thing specifically because of Apple locking their unsuspecting users into a closed ecosystem. And it sure...

    lemmyreader,

the smaller projects such as Fairphone simply aren’t good enough yet

What is not good enough with Fairphone ?

    lemmyreader,

Yes, I believe humans and animals have a soul. Certainly believe so after reading books by Elisabeth Kübler-Ross.

    lemmyreader,

The book that inspired me a lot was a translation of On Life after Death by Elisabeth Kübler-Ross first published 1984. I’ve got another book by her but that is very different and more focused on research.

Better Live ISO Booter than Ventoy?

So over the years (decade?) I’ve used Ventoy a lot. For those not aware, it is basically a live USB that you can add other ISOs to to boot into those. Usually overkill but incredibly useful for those days when you need diagnostics, a simple terminal, and then to install something what you actually want....

    lemmyreader,

Also… I am not the most comfortable with downloading anything from Sourceforge these days.

Fair enough. You can download the iso from Github.

You can try for yourself with wget or curl or your preferred download software :

    lemmyreader,

I had myself a question for the maintainers. I was planning to use the discussions and to do so, create an account :'( But it seem that Microsoft really doesn’t like Tor:

Once you have signed up with Github, and enable 2FA, it will be fine with Tor browser. No more nagging or errors.

    lemmyreader,

Have you tried a signup via a VPS provider or thought about going to your local library or some bar to use the public WiFi there with an obscure browser running in a VM that you will delete later ? It is years ago that I signed up with Github so I could press star or follow some issues of projects. I thought it was nice to find out that after enabling 2FA it was worry free using it with Tor browser.

    lemmyreader,

Gotta admin the Arch Linux wiki is an impressive piece of work since long.
