i'm honestly a bit too obsessed with making things or fixing things myself sometimes

@astrid Oh. Those are typically entirely unprotected cells.

I'm somewhat concerned you've been using that thing at all without protection circuitry.

@astrid Fair, though that's one of the failure modes, the others are messier.

Imagine using at least two completely incompatible screw standards in the same device.

I hate subcontracted part assemblies. Stuck waiting on new drivers now...

lispi314,
@lispi314@mastodon.top avatar

@jbqueru Not quite, no, those are just different sizes of standard philips crosses, usually.

I mean the difference between Philips & JIS, for example (although there are also various niche standards even in America).

Just a shout out to everyone still running the tech rat race. Belts are tightening everywhere, which means stricter performance reviews and more people being chewed up and spat out of companies everywhere.

Capitalism has no humanity by design, and that can make things fkn ROUGH for the people who have to live through it.

Take good care of yourselves, and recognize that there is no shame in looking to make a change for a happier and less stressful life if you can find it.

lispi314,
@lispi314@mastodon.top avatar

@feoh Not sure what you're suggesting there?

There are few jobs doable remotely that are going to be any better. And on-site jobs are very incompatible with some of us.

A timely reminder that “punishable by fine” means “legal for the rich.”

lispi314,
@lispi314@mastodon.top avatar

@aral Asset-proportional fines would fix that.

@martinpallmann @jwildeboer @kkarhan That does make me wonder whether there's any Javascript-less means of storing such things client-side & under the control of the user.

"LocalStorage" technically can do it but... that requires Javascript, unlike something that could be sent through extended headers.

@thingsiplay @BrodieOnLinux As I've been saying since the start, but for different reasons, is what should've been used anyway.

lispi314, to random
@lispi314@mastodon.top avatar

@ahribellah I'm not sure that'd work.

The thing is that normies drive a lot of the industry motion now and they simply don't care to question what corporate propaganda spews at them.

"Your device is old and obsolete, buy a new one". No, they should be bothering to actually do quality engineering. There is nothing which the average mobile phone with 8GB of memory does nowadays that shouldn't be feasible on a pentium 4.

@lauren @SocialistStan @Shachihoko @HistoPol @eff @team Are people really stupid enough to still buy that line?

They're stereotypes (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Four_Horsemen_of_the_Infocalypse) for a reason.

lispi314, to fediverse
@lispi314@mastodon.top avatar

@SocialistStan @lauren @Shachihoko @HistoPol @eff @team Even if they try to ban instances from doing that, #ActivityPub relays work and there's no reason instances can't be moved to #Tor, #I2P or other #AnonymizationNetworks & #mixnets

You could also add full #AsynchronousCommunication support to relays including #sneakernet

@runefar @fskornia @annaleen Right, that is part of it yes, I didn't quite express my thoughts properly.

The unwillingness to accept such limits in others (on top of oneself) is weird.

I'll much sooner trust someone who admits they don't know the answer to a question (or aren't certain about it), than one who confidently bullshits and barely apologizes when called out.

I'll note that some cultures have enough of such a relation to information certainty they have specific grammar for it.

@Reiddragon @ezio @ksk Names being for locations/places and not values is a pretty fundamental aspect of dynamic languages (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dynamic_programming_language), although unlike & doesn't reify those as first-class values like Symbols.

Once name ⇏ specific value, attaching types to anything but the values themselves doesn't make sense.

Type as part of value can also benefit from hardware acceleration in tagged-memory architectures (which are unfortunately rare now).

lispi314, to javascript
@lispi314@mastodon.top avatar

@dalias @blakereid Yep.

All those who can should be hosting nodes for #anonymization networks. The network is stronger and safer the larger it is.

This goes for #I2P and for #Tor.

Sites also should actively support use of those networks, without #Javascript which can be used for deanonymization and thus has no place on them.

Sadly that's still not as good as proper #AsynchronousCommunication like #Usenet or #NNCP nodes for resilience, but it's a start.

Fun thing about People of the Phone vs desktop & .

After watching , long before I got a , I was deeply disappointed when the one I acquired had no ability to code anything on it.

None of the that would be very feasible to implement on them.

Post by @siderea that brought this to mind. https://universeodon.com/@siderea/109938645057405956

@EggKnees Or at least, that's the reasoning that was used to sell the idea.

The thing is that the inherent assumption of https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heroic_theory_of_invention_and_scientific_development being correct (when it demonstrably isn't) already breaks it.

Before any consideration of the expiration delays being themselves problematic.

It also much like the legal system assumes you can somehow instantly become aware of & memorize any new elements and penalizes you despite the very simple impossibility of doing so for a human.

lispi314,
@lispi314@mastodon.top avatar

@EggKnees Under the system you are not allowed to reinvent anything from which someone else somewhere might have already patented, regardless of your practical incapacity to ever know that.

And I honestly cannot see how it can be considered acceptable for someone to monopolize an idea in such a fashion, particularly if someone else can come up with it.

@glyph It's mostly a degradation of , was and remains a more coercive & limited space.

It harms an escape we used to have from a world that has otherwise been entirely compromised.
