I've finally managed to get through the whole playlist (72 songs, pant pant...). I was quite impressed with the quality, since I was expecting something more amateur-ish on average (like my crummy contribution).

Eventually, I took some notes and came up with a list of 11 tracks in particular that I liked more than the others, and so candidates for my three votes this week (I won't vote for myself).

So, without further ado... 🧵

"Federation" by @Synchro [TCRE]

https://fedivision.party/#TCRE

I love the atmosphere of the track: especially at the beginning it has some middle eastern vibes that are exactly my cup of tea! I'm also impressed by the quality of the Synth V generated voice: I used it myself for a track, some time ago, and this is much more realistic (initially I thought it was a real singer).

"GeoGuessr Song" by @Wolfseule and @ScottHuehnerkrisp [EAPO]

https://fedivision.party/#EAPO

There's a vintage vibe to the song and vocals that I can't place exactly, but I like it a lot. Maybe a bit of Supertramp? Whatever it is, it works for me!

"In the wind" by @bittersweetdb [ODTH]

https://fedivision.party/#ODTH

Another song with a vaguely middle eastern vibe to it, so me likey! I like the repetitiveness of the song, and how it builds up to something more drone/industrial as it progresses

@lminiero@fosstodon.org avatar

"The funniest thing" by @MyLoFy and @convolution [FOSS]

https://fedivision.party/#FOSS

I'm a sucker for 80's music, I liked this pretty much immediately, since it has exactly the right sounds. It's also one of the very few tracks with a guitar solo, so I had to give them a shout-out, since they made me feel less alone!

lminiero,
@lminiero@fosstodon.org avatar

"Crimson tide" by @brindy [THRO]

https://fedivision.party/#THRO

Definitely one of my favourites, this year. I absolutely love the folk/pagan/medieval mood of the song, and the fact it ships some traditional instruments (a mandolin in this case) is a plus (it was my criteria for Eurovision as well... go Norway, Greece, Armenia and Estonia!)

lminiero,
@lminiero@fosstodon.org avatar

"Oasis" by @whoosh [EATW]

https://fedivision.party/#EATW

A really cool mix of ethereal singing, beautiful arpeggios and gothic influences. It reminds me a lot of gothic bands with female vocalists from the 90's, and that's great.

lminiero,
@lminiero@fosstodon.org avatar

"Maudit" by @faustivache [WCFA]

https://fedivision.party/#WCFA

This is probably the "weirdest" in the bunch of songs I highlighted so far, but it's exactly the quirkiness of it that I liked. It has a very oblique structure and vocals, and there's some chord changes that work great in the refrain when framed that way!

lminiero,
@lminiero@fosstodon.org avatar

"Mare" by @stephan and @MyLoFy [RAIL]

https://fedivision.party/#RAIL

The tracks starts sounding a bit like a Blackfield song (which is excellent), and I like it a lot when piano and cello come in to paint the scenario. The build-up is really cool as well, and shout-out to one of the other few guitar solos in this Fedivision, and a great one at that!

@lminiero@fosstodon.org avatar

"The Optically Pumped Rubidium Maser" by @robcorp55 [TPSB]

https://fedivision.party/#TPSB

A song with a title like that pretty much had to be a progressive rock song, and I think as a definitio it's quite appropriate! A beautiful chord progression, with a simple yet tasteful guitar melody painting the picture

lminiero,
@lminiero@fosstodon.org avatar

"Landwaves" by @toroidalcore [TDRC]

https://fedivision.party/#TDRC

This is a fantastic light jazz piece. The beginning reminded me a bit of some tracks from Pat Metheny's "Still life (talking)" and "Secret Story" (which seems to be in line with the "driving around the country" mood set by the author). The bass solo is quite cool too!

lminiero,
@lminiero@fosstodon.org avatar

"Misaligned Aardvarks" by @keefmarshall [NOTH]

https://fedivision.party/#NOTH

The synth/samples intro is quite amazing, and very atmospheric. The song itself is a fantastic homage to 70s/80s: it reminded me a lot of Aviary, one of my favourite bands ever. Definitely another serious candidate for my vote!

@lminiero@fosstodon.org avatar

That's all! If you contributed something to and I didn't mention you, don't feel discouraged: there's good chances I did like your song! But I had to make a shortlist of those I liked the most, as I'll have to come up with those 3 codes by the end of the week 😂

While I'm listening to the whole #Fedivision2024 playlist (more thoughts on that later!) I uploaded my "BBB (Big Boomer Bænd)" song (code [DEEP] on the #Fedivision website) on my #Faircamp instance. It's free to download in all its FLAC glory 😁

There's not many left, apparently, so let's share them while they last...

I recently shared a long rock/orchestral song on Cleopatra as an EP, so I'd love if you listened to it 🎶

If you like that, there's more where it came from 😁 Boosts and feedback welcome!

@bagder that's great news! But did they provide any info on what caused this to happen in the first place?

20 years after the first themes came to me, I finally did it... My 27 minutes rock opera song on Cleopatra is now done! It's an appetizer to my upcoming "Musae" album, where it will be one of the tracks: in this EP I decided to split it in different parts for easier listening.

Bandcamp: https://lminiero.bandcamp.com/album/cleopatra
Mirlo: https://mirlo.space/lminiero/release/cleopatra-(ep)
Faircamp: https://music.lminiero.it/cleopatra/

Will soon be on Spotify/Apple Music/iTunes/etc. too.

I'd love to hear what you think, boosts welcome!

ambergrey, to guitar
@ambergrey@mastodon.social avatar

What are some of your favorite alt guitar tunings?

lminiero,
@lminiero@fosstodon.org avatar

@ambergrey to be honest I think I never changed the tuning of my guitar, except maybe the very rare occasion when I went drop D for some specific heavier song. I'm just too used to the standard tuning (with its advantages and its challenges) to feel comfortable learning new fingerings and positions that are pretty much muscular memory for me by now. I've struggled with the ukulele for the same reason 😂

lminiero,
@lminiero@fosstodon.org avatar

@ambergrey oh piano is a different beast... I took piano lessons for a while and still couldn't do it! 😅 Too hard for me to have different brains in the two hands, which is something that's much easier to go around on guitar instead. If you can play both I'm really envious!

Today we give the possibility of customizing our characters in whatever vaguely-RPG influenced title for granted.
In 1984, that possibility was basically absent from non-RPG titles. Skool Daze is an interesting, if rare, exception. The 1984 Spectrum (and C64) title gave players the possibilty of re-naming all the major characters in the game (teachers, the nerd, the bully, etc), thus giving many a first glimpse of immersion...

lminiero,
@lminiero@fosstodon.org avatar

@damianogerli as a kid, I remember loving the times I bumped into a game that would apparently give me more freedom than all other games did. On my MSX, for instance, games like Gunfright or Jack the Nipper were basically old school "open world" sandbox games in a handful of bytes!

I've started adding some of the accepted speakers on the website: not a complete list yet (still waiting for confirmation from others and there's more content from ourselves too), but it will give you a taste!
