We need laws about labeling AI generated output that is presented to the public.

Whatever else we need to do policy wise will be impossible to get good data about if we don't have rules that allow us to know how AI generated products are showing up in public.

Also AI companies should be advocating for this too, otherwise their products are going to become the go-to explanation for infringement.

@Vrimj also if the AI companies actually care about the quality of their datasets, labeling AI output is important for them too

Their models won’t do too well if they start training on their own output 🤦‍♀️

I’ve been struggling to spend much time on Mastodon lately because my feed is >50% discussion of Bluesky

Seeing them makes me feel a terrible cocktail of:

  • FOMO for not having an invite
  • Confusion over why everyone cares so much all of a sudden
  • Fear that the wonderful community I’ve found here on Masto in the last 6 months will die because everyone will leave
  • Existential dread over the immense difficulty of managing a community-governed social media platform

It’s been tough 😖

The response to my thread / meltdown here has been… incredible.

Mastodon and the Fediverse are alive and well, and there are so many of us weirdos and misfits committed to keeping this place alive and thriving 🥹

I ended up crying multiple times reading your replies, just seeing how much this place means to all of you too

Maybe we don’t need mainstream appeal over here. Stay weird, Mastodon. We love you ❤️

And yes, you’re right. I just get overwhelmed by how much clean up I need to do of my feed, so I don’t clean up the feed, which overwhelms me even more. It’s a vicious cycle!

Out of curiosity, I took a look at the aol.com home page for the first time in many, many years. 3/4 of the page seems devoted to ads; if it's still around in a decade or so I might have to take a gander again.

This is not how the World Wide Web was suppose to work.

@machias the funny thing about sites that are covered with ads like that - they are not good for anyone!

  • Terrible for the user, since the website is unusable without Adblock

  • Terrible for the site itself, since people will leave and not come back after having a bad experience

  • Terrible for most people advertising on it, since with that much noise (and everyone getting annoyed by it), nobody is clicking on ads and buying these products

It’s literally just making everyone’s lives worse
