What a King's Birthday weekend! (1/10)

mark,

A night spent at the Lake Takapō YHA – amazing views! Cooking noodles beside Lake Pukaki. Quick visits to Aoraki Village and Twizel, surrounded by atmospheric cloud and hoping for the forecast snow to arrive. The vegan pie at Fairlie is overrated. (2/10)

mark,

Chaos on Lindis Pass, where vehicles big and small struggle to gain traction in the snow, and try in vain to pass each other. A very hands-on policeman manages to stop an impatient oncoming campervan from sliding into our car. (3/10)

mark,

Queenstown in winter is beyond beautiful. (4/10)

mark,

Parking in Queenstown is a nightmare. There is a special place reserved in Hell for people who park their fossil fuel guzzler in a spot reserved for EV charging. (5/10)

mark,

At night we drive towards Glenorchy. I rest in the car while my partner and friend get some moon and snowy mountain photos. Rest is important when you're the only driver! (6/10)

Evacuating Nomads Queenstown Hostel at 2:37am is surreal in light of the recent Wellington tragedy. The transition from deep sleep to “I need to leave this building right now” is bizarre. Thankfully, I know where the essentials are and can grab them super fast. I put my trousers and skivvy on in bed, but wait until I'm outside to put on my socks, shoes, jumper, coat, and hat. We realise our car is super close, and warm up there until everyone is given the all-clear to re-enter the building. In the morning, my shower is cold. (7/10)

mark,

The government's underinvestment in EV charging infrastructure is a disgrace. A lovely chap waiting for me to finish charging in Cromwell tells me bureaucratic red tape with the lines companies is the real problem. (8/10)

mark,

An Indian takeaway at Fairlie, running from a food truck at the owner's house, with heaps of vegan-friendly options, is divine! (9/10)

mark,

Sydenham and Christchurch Central at night on King's Birthday feel utterly deserted, especially when you've just come from Queenstown. (10/10)

I thoroughly enjoyed day 1 of the Cross Agency Network in Ōtautahi. Even better, my partner was able to join me because they've been invited to speak on a panel tomorrow. We've met some amazing people and had some amazing exchanges of ideas.

mark,

This is today!

This Facebook post makes me happy so I had to share it here. Running a small, accessible black box theatre that showcases original local works is hard in a conservative city where the established, monopolistic players tend to get all the money, but my friends are still fighting hard to make it happen. #Ōtautahi

Trying to get back into the groove at work but still dealing with the exhaustion of caring for Nana in hospital.

our whole dang new intranet goes live tomorrow. I've done a lot of work on it and I'm not looking forward to the deluge of complaints about it. The organisation is just Not Kind and people seem to jump at any opportunity to tear someone else down 😭.

mark,

@rai Aw. I hope you can take pride in everything you've achieved.

The past week has been full of ups and downs – but one of the ups is I've been provisionally approved for appointment as a JP!

Grateful that I have enough energy to get through what has been quite a difficult and busy week.

Recently something happened to remind me that people can change, minds can open, and toxicity can fade away.

"Other nations such as Norway have lived to regret the introduction of wealth taxes, as the wealthy leave for lower tax jurisdictions and take their money with them."

Really Stuart? Well I've got a message for sociopaths who profit massively from businesses built on top of public resources, then leave the country rather than contribute back to them. Don't let the door hit you in the arse on your way out.

mark,

@billbennett We get a slightly better choice this time. A minority government where and get some modicum of influence. @strypey @lightweight

It's been a long day spent with my Nana at the hospital after she had a fall. makes everything harder 😞

mark,

Every day I need every bit of tact I can muster to convince my Nana in hospital to eat just a little bit of food 😪

We're open for business! We still have some gorgeous blazers and heaps of amazing shoes, so let's make this January amazing! 💖

Yesterday's theft was pretty heartbreaking, but we're gonna bounce back stronger than ever. We're closing in early February, but we'll fight like hell to open again later this year!

It would lift our hearts to welcome you through our doors this week. ❤️🧡💛💚💙💜🤎🖤🤍🏳️‍🌈🏳️‍⚧️

mark,

Wishing for a world where mine and my partner's queer, vegan-friendly fashion business didn't get hammered by thousands of dollars’ worth of thefts from the get-go (with no hope of compensation) and where we had the capital, time, energy, and visa situation to keep it going for a decent length of time. 😔

mark,

@Lundemo The visa situation is all good now thanks ☺️ but it was the reason we could only run a pop-up shop in a less secure location.
