#FrenchPolice reinforcements have started arriving in New Caledonia as part of a massive operation to regain control of the capital #Noumea.
#Rioters angry with an #ElectoralReform have burnt businesses, torched cars, looted shops and set up road barricades over three days, cutting off access to medicine and food, authorities said.
This may explain Labours insistence on rejecting any ‘restricted’ movement of younger people between Europe and the Disunited Kingdom. The prejeduices and xenophobia of a minority who will not be effected dominate the futures of many in these islands. A way to win an election maybe, a way to run a country no.
From the article Insiders said that “pensioner hero voters” – those who backed the Tories last time but who may switch to Labour – compared the move to Truss’s doomed plan for £45bn in unfunded tax cuts during her brief prime ministership.
Hero voters? Xenophobic eejits who resent the young and have little idea about the real world.

Big news: Maine joins the National Popular Vote Interstate Compact! The inter-state agreement now includes states with 209 electoral votes, and will come into effect when enough states join that include 270 votes. Making progress!
"He was vowing to replace Canada’s electoral system, which tended to give parties power disproportionate to their level of support"
PR advocates believe that each party should have a number of MPs proportionate to the votes that party has received; but the relationship between power and proportion of MPs is inherently nonlinear.
(Those models neglect that in some matters an assembly may require an enhanced majority, say 2/3 or unanimity. Also members of an assembly need not vote en bloc.)
#ProportionalRepresentation necessarily leads to party power disproportionate to level of popular support. As a consequence, we must evaluate the merits of electoral systems on other criteria.
There’s an urgent need for a fairer electoral system – and if politicians won’t make it happen, the people will.
Monbiot is far too optimistic. Neither #Conservative or #Labour parties have any interest in change. They will fight tooth and nail to prevent reform and their friend in the media will help them, misinformation where lies don't work.
Electoral spending caps, transparency and candidate funding caps are all well and good. With on-going tweaking, major political party ‘capture’ might even be curtailed, in time. To be sure, tighter regulatory machinery covering electioneering and socially responsible updates to electoral law should be welcomed. But I have an alternative which would fix most issues: limit the number of ‘terms’ a candidate can ‘serve’ as an elected official. Two or three terms sounds about right… no? #auspol#electoralreform
"Maine votes to join multi-state agreement to elect the president by popular vote"
It's not passed into law yet, but seems likely at this point.
This map shows a credible path to achieving 270 votes before the 2028 election. If you're in one of the blue states on this map, please write to your state legislators and governor!
Tory donor’s Diane Abbott remarks were racist and wrong, says Sunak
At the same tie and with his fingers crossed behind is back, he was heard to whisper ‘but he money is bloody useful, just as well we gave him those NHS contracts’
“Galloway’s win will also embolden other independent groups supporting prospective candidates. It’s going to be vicious and feel as though Labour has lost its grip, which simply isn’t true. We just need to strengthen our messaging.” Compass, said Labour could be facing a slow collapse in support like that seen in the “red wall” and Scotland.
@nusher One of the problems to put it mildly is money. Galloway has enough funds (from god knows where) and notoriety to give him a little boost. Most independents worth their salt would not. Labour and the Conservatives have got the donations for influence market sewn up.
Labour MPs received just £1,100 from channel in same period, as concern mounts over its impact.
And one assumes everyone eslse gets nowt. But the Guardian only cares about them (in England natch). A tiny watchership, but it is quoted and reported on by all the MSM and represented as an authentic source of news.
