I wear too many hats. I love theatre, data, science, and connecting people. Let's make a sustainable future that isn't built on the assumptions of the past.

He/him. I live in Ōtautahi, Aotearoa.

My posts reflect no opinion but my own.

When I share other people's posts, it's an interesting perspective worth reflecting on, but I don't necessarily agree.

That's right, if you want an invite code for calckey.social, I'm only giving out a few of them per day. Message me if you want one. They're available on a first come, first serve basis.

If you don't want an invite code and just want to join a server, visit here:

mark,

@atomicpoet I would be very keen to migrate to calckey.social. I've been thinking about starting my own instance, but I don't think I have the time, money, or technical nous, so better to join someone else's instance for now. I'm keen to be somewhere with a light touch on fediblocking, compared with the very heavy touch of my current (Mastodon) instance.

mark,

@atomicpoet Yes please! 😊

I'm ten pages into Jesus, Interrupted by @bartehrman and it's already brilliant!

The word has finally appeared in the vocabulary of my local Robert Harris in the form of a cinnamon scroll.

Just bought the domain notmeta.social.

It will likely run as a server.

As the domain implies, it will not federate with .

mark,

@atomicpoet I really like that you're not religious about this. You're in favour of creating spaces that work for users and recognise that different users have different needs, values, and desires.

So much procrastination in recent weeks. So much governance stuff to catch up on. The joys of committing to lots on top of my day job!

It's days like this that I hate the Fediverse.

I don't hate ActivityPub. I don't hate the many devs and admins that make the Fediverse happen. I don't hate the average person who's just going about their business on Mastodon, Pixelfed, Kbin, etc.

I hate the fact that, all day today, I've been constantly pinged regarding some sort of Fedi drama that I only slightly understand because I'm trying really, really hard to pay attention to my wife and kid on a day they want to celebrate with me.

The Fediverse is an important part of my life, but it is not my life.

As important as Meta joining the Fediverse is, it's not more important than my family.

Sadly, more than once today, i had to clear up confusion because if I didn't nip it in the bud, certain people -- who exist purely to drum up drama -- would continue spreading rumours and outright lies that are blatantly untrue.

Shame on anyone who can't handle the fact I don't live the entirety of my life on the Internet.

Some of you should turn off your phones and touch grass.

mark,

@atomicpoet I'm sorry you had to put up with that. Well done for knowing your priorities.

Starting tomorrow, all my Fediverse discussion will be moving back to calckey.social.

There’s been substantial improvements to calckey.social, and I can’t wait to put it through its paces.

mark,

@atomicpoet That sounds exciting! I look forward to hearing more another day 😊

Sometimes I get the impression New World needs to do a bit more work on their targeted marketing to vegans and vegetarians:

mark,

@thomasbeagle I'm told my local New World is owned by vegans, but it doesn't really feel like it. I guess rich vegans are a different breed altogether.

Well, well, well. Look what arrived to New Zealand. 🤔
What could it be?

mark,

@KiwiEV Ah yes, flight, the most carbon-friendly way to get a truck into the country.

Just saw a seagull that sounded like a flying sheep.

  • mark,

@evan Heavily dependent on the purpose and process, but I think it would be ethical to perform research about the influenza pandemic 100 years ago that involved temporary exhumation of bodies, as long as appropriate ethics approval processes were followed.

I am considering getting an electric car, but I cannot have home charging (No off road parking)

I live in Reading, and commute (drive) back and forth to London a couple of times a week, round trip of ~85 miles.

Is it still absolute madness to be 100% reliant on public charging points?

(Bearing in mind that in 7 years time, you’ll no longer be able to buy brand new petrol vehicles)

    mark,

@spoonrefuter I live in an apartment with no carpark. I use a car share company in New Zealand called Zilch. They have a subscription option where you get a car outside of business hours, you can charge and park for free at their carparks, plus use public charging points for free. It's not widespread, but could be a nice model for reducing car ownership, increasing car sharing, and addressing the issue of not having off-street parking with a charger.

I took Friday off to catch up on admin. Then I decided to wait until Saturday. Now I'm waiting for Sunday.

Moment of realisation – I don't find Mastodon great for content discovery, but Kbin or Lemmy could be perfect for this!

This week I read the Justice of the Peace manual and did the online training modules. Now I'm waiting for the paper version to arrive, to see if it's any different. In-person training is less than two weeks away. A few short months and I should be all sworn in. Exciting!

We bought a white mechanical keyboard with rainbow lights and I'm in love! We also bought a mismatched gaming mouse which is kinda cool.

    mark,

I swear I'm just typing lots of toots because I love the new keyboard.

    mark,

Months ago I read someone with neurodivergence saying they need their mechanical keyboard to motivate them to work, stay focused, and enjoy it. I now fully understand!

"Google should have a software service in the Fediverse."

@evan Strongly agree. Protocols are for everyone – not just for the niche and not just for the mainstream.

I've been enjoying looking through everyone's photos from last night (on various platforms). I couldn't be bothered going out, but I reckon I've got a good chance of catching one on Monday night and had already been planning to go out then.

    mark,

Darn it, with all the clouds, I definitely won't be catching an aurora tonight! I should have made the most of the chance on Friday 😂

    mark,

@yojimbo Ooh, an aurora in the snow, now that would be fun!

    mark,

@yojimbo At the very least some pretty colours!
