@rasterweb have you ever used lace as a spray paint stencil? Just curious, have a project where I might try it.

Having upgraded my Ender 3 v2 to its almost final form with a Creality Sonic Pad (I know about the licensing issues, you don’t need to tell me), I’m now debating going from the direct drive extruder upgrade back to a Bowden tube extruder. I’ve had issues with locating a filament dryer box near the printer and then getting the filament to the printer without it going across and entering the extruder stepper at an extreme angle. Any binding causes the print to get ripples.

Has anyone used https://kiwix.org/ ? I’m particularly interested in using it to scrape large websites into an offline “neighborhood server” that can provide some reference without full websites.

Multi-material printing on the Bambu is incredibly wasteful, it turns out. Using a cheaper plain PLA as supports for PLA-CF. I didn’t think about how it needs to change filament every layer and how that’d mean another little bit of each filament in the “waste bucket” and another layer on the “waste tower.”

I’ll measure after but I think I’ll have used just as much waste filament as the mass of the print and the supports.

Is anyone working on a version of ActivityPub that’d allow fediverse servers to communicate with something more efficient than JSON? Just curious.

On the same thread of the question about more efficient serialization between fediverse instances, I think we need: options for low CPU (de)serialization, lower bandwidth protocols, markup that takes less CPU to render.

For networking, I keep thinking of the “polite” wireless networks in Cory Doctorow’s Walkaway that jumped frequencies to avoid current usage and used a mesh to route.

What is the hashtag for live-within-our-means computing rather than the dystopic collapse computing?

Printing a big design for cable organization in my drawers! Both pieces of https://www.printables.com/model/274250-ikea-alex-cable-organizer , which will take about 16 hours on my Bambu printer — a relatively fast printer — at 0.2mm layer height.

In news, there’s someone locally on our Craigslist selling used 315W solar panels for $80 each. They have 30 of them — that’s 9.4kW! I just don’t have the space to store them, nor a vehicle to move them; and we already filled our roof with solar. I don’t think our tiny urban lot can host more large panels, just some small accessory lights.

Big downside of the new Ozlo sleep wireless earbuds (which were spun off the Bose sleep headphones) is that the iOS app eats battery with background processing for no apparent reason. My Battery app says it user 20% of battery in a day. Likely just needs more optimization?

The hardware is great though, and doesn’t need the app once paired with the phone. Two nights now, I’ve used them, and they very comfortable. Most importantly, they actually get quiet — other sleep headphones are too loud.

Sitting in the sun on the back porch (with noise canceling headphones to keep out the city sounds) is one of the real perks of working from home.

Just imagine, I could be sitting under fluorescent lighting in a cubicle instead right now!

Before I go off trying to forge my own path, does anyone know if there’s also a set of projects along the lines of “you have a 3D printer, now you can construct these other tools to build a little makerspace”? I’m thinking in particular of a smaller scale version of Open Source Ecology’s “Construction Sets” idea (from https://www.opensourceecology.org/development/ )

What’s the current state of the art for self-hosted “tools for thought” (knowledge base / notes.) Particularly, looking for the server component and a backup story, that then can work with some frontend mobile app like Logseq/Roam/Obsidian?

I wonder if I tag both and or , if we could get enough people local to Milwaukee together here on the fediverse to arrange a group ride?

I haven’t used Facebook in years and some people used Reddit or Discords in the past, but I’m trying to avoid those completely too. So, who wants to ride?

@bcshort Since you ran the feed reader poll -- do you have a list of RSS feeds worth following? I keep asking but not so many people using RSS feed readers these days, so I don't get a lot of answers.

I don’t know why I keep letting myself get pulled into replying to mostly-beginners on the subreddit, but a lot of people there aren’t patient enough and I am trying to explain things in a non-condescending and thorough way — what I wish other people had done for me when I was starting out. My replies must sometimes help, because I get up votes. Still, I’m tempted to fully block Reddit on my phone.

Re-reading Jeff Tweedy’s How to Write One Song https://openlibrary.org/books/OL30180106M/How_to_Write_One_Song lately, and not only is it fun to hear from one of the musicians that has been in my life for a long time, but I kept coming back to the several times he said if he wrote a song, it was important that he “wasn’t hurting anybody.” And certainly music could be used to hurt. But I think it’s far more important to use it to heal, help others, or share. He’s clearly thought about this and it’s one of his ethical choices in life.

Making software that runs repeatedly or continuously, like CI jobs, more efficient also means less energy. If you’re working on OSS or internal projects at work that you can make similar changes to, please look into it! It’s not exactly but it feels like a tangible computing thing that we all can help with in corporate jobs.
