I'm super excited to announce Comfort Zone, a new podcast with me, @nileane, and @ChrisLawley!

Each week we'll talk about new things that take us outside our comfort zone a little.

The trailer is out today and episode 1 drops on Thursday.

I'm so excited about this!

Yup, this is the issue. It's a high-trust sort of app, and it doesn't take too much to lose that trust. I just uninstalled the app myself.

Fortunately, I made a video about Hidden Bar a few months ago so I just opened that again and am back in business. https://apps.apple.com/us/app/hidden-bar/id1452453066

I've also been told Ice is good (and open source) but I haven't used it yet myself. https://github.com/jordanbaird/Ice

truly are the new lock in for password managers. I'm trying to be a good citizen and use passkeys wherever I can, but now I can't properly try other password managers without needing to create dozens of new keys. I'm trying Proton Pass now, and it's a major pain.

Extrapolate this out to a world where passkeys are the norm and effectively all of my accounts authenticate this way, and moving your data becomes impossible. :dumpster:

I know the FIDO Alliance and passkey enthusiasts will say that the passkey standard isn't built to lock users in, and migrating them should be possible.

That's well and good, but we're several years into this and zero of the major players support this. Whether you use Apple, Google, 1Password, or anything else, your passkeys are locked to those accounts today. maybe you can move in a few years, but you can't now. Yay.

Man,Nilay is just so good. He asked Google CEO Sundar Pichai how he felt when he learned OpenAI had trained their Sora video generation tool on YouTube without asking permission. Nilay then perfectly shifts to making him comment on how others might feel the same as him when Google trains on their data without approval.

Good stuff.

Did you know that you can drag the items around in that iMessage…thing?

Pixelmator has been doing features like this for years and they always called them "ML" features (like "ML Super Resolution", "ML Enhance", "ML Denoise"). Now they've shifted their wording to "AI".

Good reminder that "AI" is a buzzword, and not AI things are LLM-related.

That’s a weird one.

Bartender was sold to someone new and neither party proactively told their users.

I have Bartender installed on 2 Macs and had no idea. I double checked my email and didn’t have anything from them either 🤷🏻‍♂️

Oh damn, the folks over at Ship of Harkinian are back with a PC-native port of Majora’s Mask.

I haven’t played it yet, but given the remarkable quality of their Ocarina of Time port, I’m pretty confident in saying this will be amazing too.

(Yes it does work on macOS)

(You do need to bring your own ROM, this includes zero Nintendo assets)

Back in August I started what I called "season 2" of A Better Computer. I've published 39 videos since then, and I'm planning episode 40 right now. Odds are that will be the season finale and I'm going to take another break over the summer.

A couple winners from this season were:

ChatGPT's Mac app https://youtu.be/yfRJ5G-iNHY

Things 3 pro tips https://youtu.be/XITnx_KFwIo

How to make your own "better computer" https://youtu.be/hX4KUkM0vVI

The nanotexture iPad is definitely something people have diverse opinions about. Nate loved the look of it, and I know others who like it as well, but when I used it in person I instantly knew it wasn’t for me.

Glad it’s there for those who dig it, but also happy it’s optional. https://wandering.shop/@NateBarham/112509762661478738
