My number one tip for people is to boost more!

Discovery sucks on Mastodon, which is partially by design, but it also means it’s hard to find new and interesting people here. If you see something cool, reach for that boost button as well!

One narrative I have simply no patience for anymore are people who see apps like Apollo, Tweetbot, or Twitterrific get screwed over by the platform they’re using and say something like, “well, this is what happens when you build a business on someone else’s platform. You gotta be smart.”

Friends, it is so hard to find success as a business, so if you find something that puts food on your table and makes you & your customers happy, you run with it.

I've updated my post to more clearly explain what this change will do.

  1. It does not prevent you from using hashtags inline, as some are worried it would do.

  2. It is entirely a UI change, and each Mastodon interface can choose what to do here.

  3. This only impacts hashtags at the bottom of a post, and attempts to make them more pleasant.

Here's a mock up of how I believe this new setting would change the appearance of posts…

I love how so many people are like “these reviewers are paid off” and this guy’s like, “nah, it’s malpractice for a reviewer to actually give a bad review.”

A historically bad tech take that should be put in a museum.

My wife: do you know anything about this NameDrop thing? I keep seeing posts online about it just giving my info to random people on the street? This sounds crazy.

The FUD around NameDrop this past week has been wild. My wife is a teacher and there’s apparently a far that this will give students their teachers’ home address just by being in the same room. Truly embarrassing coverage on this one.

More Birchtree is a way to:

  • Get exclusive, more personal posts
  • Remove ads from the blog
  • Support indie blogging

I'd like to do more with this, but it's brand new and I don't want to commit to too much too soon. It would mean the world to me if you subscribed ❤️

Here's the announcement post https://birchtree.me/blog/introducing-more-birchtree/

Random font appreciation post:

MonoLisa is my favorite monospace font and I use it everywhere https://www.monolisa.dev/

Futura Now is a modernized version of the classic and comes with tons of variants. This is the official font for ABC as well as headings on Birchtree https://www.monotype.com/fonts/futura-now

Atkinson Hyperlegible is a very legible and beautiful font I use on Birchtree for all body text https://brailleinstitute.org/freefont

SimpleBits has some great ones, but I love Cartridge https://simplebits.shop/collections/fonts/products/cartridge

So Wired has retracted that article about Google manipulating your searches to be able to show you more ads. The piece didn’t meet their editorial standards because it seems the author kinda just guessed that was happening 🙃

Person A: hey, I like this thing!

Person B: ugh, here are 5 reasons why that thing kinda sucks…

When I was younger, I appreciated Person B a lot more. Nowadays I’m much more like “my dude, why would you see someone expressing joy for something and try to bring it down?”

Lots of comments recently on my channel from people immediately NOPEing on an app with a subscription.

I'm starting to feel like the App Store wrecked people's expectations for what software they can use with basically zero cost. When everything was like $1-5, you could buy every single cool app that people talked about, and not really feel the pain.

Downside is companies could not sustain themselves on that little revenue, so many didn't make it.

I can't believe this has to be said, but I'm going to say it plainly: conservatives in the US who are hellbent on cancelling companies who say anything at all about LGBTQ people and passing legislation to push these people out of society are spreading hate, and backing down is absolutely not what anyone should be doing in the face of these hateful actions.

They want small government for them, but big government to attack an already marginalized group.

Guess who found Shapeshifter on their G4 iMac from 2002?

Amora was for the Star Wars fan who wanted their OS to look dope as hell.

Milk was for the classy gentleman who wanted that 2020s look 2 decades early.

Niqu was for a flatter look with total color customization.

And Royale Inspiriat was for sickos who wanted Mac OS to look like Windows XP.

And yes, photos were the easiest way to get screenshots of this today.
