CSSDay was so incredibly amazing last year that it's killing me that I can't attend this year.

✏️ New post: "Old Dogs, new CSS Tricks"

Lots of new features have shipped in the last few years, but real-world usage is still low. What are the things holding us back, and how can we break out of our old habits to learn new ways of writing CSS?

@mxbck I was already waiting for your yearly blog post 😁

I've decided to update my monthly contributions to @eleventy, now supporting them with $50 instead of $5 monthly. ❤️

If you can, support them, too! They need your help.

I made a little website for my book. Before I publish it, is there any feedback you have? Does it answer all your questions? Are there bugs? Is anything missing? Thank you! ❤️

Assuming the premise that us CSS developers aren't reaching for container queries as much as well all thought we would is true...

Why do you think that is?

matuzo,
@matuzo@front-end.social avatar

@chriscoyier with container queries a lot more can go wrong: container-type creates a new stacking context which can (and likely will) become a big issue, not naming containers can yield unexpected results, and using container queries means more maintenance because you're not just managing one but multiple containers.

Still, I love them and I'm looking forward to using them in production more.

All my old slides contain dead links to my old Twitter account. To avoid that in the future I got myself a dedicated domain that points to whichever social media I'm using primarily at the moment.

I just used float: left; on an image and the following section looked funky. I realised that I had to use clear. For some reason, I immediately felt dirty. 😁

I know it's a privileged thing to say but web dev isn't fun for me at the moment. I'm annoyed and bored. I guess it's because after every high (interop) comes a low, and most importantly I'm just really annoyed by how terrible the condition of most websites is. Not just in terms of accessibility. Ed Zitron's “Better Offline” summarises well what I mean. (https://www.betteroffline.com/).

Also AI is claiming it's share of annoying me.

I don't know. Maybe I'm just tired.

As developers, we deal with practical challenges every day. Often, we’re so focused on the technical part of development that we forget the real purpose of our jobs. It’s not solving technical issues; it’s building products for human beings. What we do is very technical at its core, but the consequences of our decisions are very human: they strongly affect people’s lives, their access to information, and their participation in society.

“13.3% of home pages had a "skip" link present, down from 17.2% in 2023. One out of every 10 "skip" links were broken”.

That's a massive drop. Interesting!

There are two conferences in the UK I had to cancel again this year, which is fine because family comes first, but I really hope that it's going to work out next year. There are so many people I'd love to meet in person (again). ☺️

It's a miracle to me how my partner gets anything done with 2 babies and a little kid at home. She cooks every day, takes care of the twins, plays with our 3 year old, cleans, does the groceries... She's an effin' machine! For example, the other day she casually made this cake for her goddaughter. 🙃

I know it's May, but I'll send out the CFP for the HTMHell advent calendar 2024 in a couple of weeks. You can start to think about topics now, if you want to participate. 😊

Also, now is a good time to propose topics, even if you don't want to write yourself. What's something about HTML you'd love to learn?

Here's last year's calendar:

WOW! The second night in a row in which one of the babies wakes up every 20-30 minutes, screams and only calms down when you stand up and walk around with her.
At least, it's only one and not both. 🙃

@sophie yeah totally. At 3am in the morning I was like “omg we got it, gurl, just stahp" and she was like "wah wah weh weh". Ice-cold!

It's 7AM and I've already confused margin-block-end with margin-inline-end.

matuzo,

@matthiasott Yeah, kinda. I'm working on a no class reset and base stylesheet that uses modern CSS. I'll use this as a basis for my personal website when I finish it in 2032.

I'm currently replying to mails I've received a year ago.

I'm so bad at replying to messages via email, social media, and messengers. That's one of my worst personal traits and I absolutely hate that about me.
