That urge that people have to reply with “actually it’s ok to mock drug addiction and mental health issues” is really something.

@thomasfuchs I swear these is something on social media that breaks people's ability to understand nuanced discussion.

OK, new thing to address in the Heat Pump Chronicles:

HVAC pros know a lot of stuff and have pretty elaborate mental frameworks of how things "should" be designed. And usually they're correct at least on a basic level.

For instance, you don't want to size a heat pump for heating load if you also plan to use it for cooling. If the heating load is bigger than the cooling load, this would result in short-cycling in the summer.

This is still true! But only with single-stage equipment.

@mikey_p@mas.to avatar

@TechConnectify I can't help but wonder why consumers aren't demanding these. I do notice more modern, mini-split head pumps in dense urban areas, think Downtowns, New York, Philly, Chicago, vs. typical suburbs. Not sure if it's an issue of cost, legislation, incentives, refit costs, contractor awareness, consumer awareness, maybe it's a weird classist thing? who knows, but it really baffles me

@mph To be fair I think even Terminal.app needs similar permissions. It bugs me that even after granting full disk access permission, photos and other 'special' items aren't included

👨‍💻 When setting up network-related cron jobs, do your fellow system admins a favor and maybe shoot for 12:05 and 12:35 instead of 12:00 and 12:30.

Not only will you help avoid pilling on to the very popular time slots but you probably have a better chance of getting a positive response too!

@ksenzee @thomasfuchs What's wild to me is that people like my parents, who lived through the polio scare and introduction of the vaccine are all about personal choice and complain about masks and social distancing constantly.

I kinda want to run my own Mastodon server (if so, would use a hosted service) but I also kind of don't want to.

The way Mastodon is federated with mostly "special interest" servers is just striking me as weird as I have, you know, more than one interest? But I also don't really care all that much about the big "everything" servers. ¯_(ツ)_/¯

Why is this so hard (not a comment about Mastodon, more about my brain).

The LLM thing and people believing it will replace people reminds me so much of the "visual programming" hype in the 80s/90s, when companies promised that everyone could write complex applications with a few clicks and drawing on the screen.

    Turns out, no, you can’t.

It would certainly be nice if things could easily be binary.

Some of the businesses with the the most questionable practices are also hubs for the marginalized or disadvantaged.

The disability community, for a single example, thrives on Facebook. It has provided connection and answers for countless people.

That’s not to say that alternatives couldn’t exist and provide that, but simply burning things down—no matter how much it feels like it could improve some things—would harm many others.
