She/her :blobcatheartlesbian: ex-software dev now writing words for money, fun, and/or survival. I like new people but may be too busy to follow back.

Republicans have campaigned on killing me and mine my whole life, so "Democrats are just as bad" crap gets a fuck off and an unfollow.

I write long-form on my Federated blog at @solarbird. If you want to support me or this instance, have my patreon: http://patreon.com/solarbird

Reading Seattle 1921-1940: From Boom to Bust.

On streetcars & General Motors:

As to the main line of negotiations, [public power proponent Guy C.] Myers reported to [Seattle Superintendent of Lighting J.D.] Ross in late July that it was tough going trying to sell the street railway bonds because, in his opinion, General Motors wanted the street railway to be sold to a private company with which it could make a deal in selling its buses without competitive bidding. These would be gas buses. [Seattle Mayor] Dore favored gas buses, and ruled out trackless trolleys, despite the mounting evidence nationwide that trackless trolleys were making such profits that investment houses were entering a field they had been avoiding.

(Despite this, I'm not mad about Dore - I even built out his wikipedia article a bit. He was decent about labour, serving two terms, one before and one after a Republican who was... not so much. And the streetcar system had been a financial issue for a while, since Seattle sat out the Post-WWI boom and in fact kind of had a depression.)
