In talking to a lot of people about their food habits and preferences I’ve realized that I don’t really have any element of disgust for any foods. Not sure if it’s a function of my cultural upbringing or exposure. Everything is interesting to me, very few things are disgusting. I also feel I can be uninterested in eating something without being disgusted by it.

All to say, I will defend the Cheetos burrito at Aguachiles El Tamarindo, and the grasshopper tacos at La Oaxaqueña with my last breath

@Fury @skinnylatte I eat vegan at least 1-2 times every week. I practice the Teochew Taoist dietary cleansing for folks who are omnivores. Taoists don't throw anyone out for not being perfect. True Taoists never put any harsh judgments on anyone. I'm not quite there yet because I'm VERY harsh on judgements against authoritarian governments.

@skinnylatte These are same folks who are disgusted by fact many ppl in my family happily eat up fish eyeballs, chicken feet, deep fried fish fins, fried insects & pig intestines but don't blink at buying select meat cuts, eat only fish fillets & think eating insects is absolutely disgusting.

@skinnylatte @Fury In fact, I remember when my youngest Aunt was accepted into the Shaolin temple school in Swatow. She went in as omnivore. She had to go on full restrictive vegan diet for 6 months for her probationary time. Another 24 months after.

The writer isn't Chinese. There's always been heavy censorship of information in China. It's not a new phenomenon. It's been happening since before my grandparents were born.

(In today’s illiberal China, by contrast, we see what happens when the preservation of information for the public is less important than protecting the ruling system. The Chinese government is determined to prove it can be made to disappear at the snap of its fingers.)

Mom's opted for afternoon forest walk & is taking a post lunch nap now.

We had Vietnamese style bun rieu ; crab/seafood tomato soup. Mom used some frozen soft shell crabs, this time, because we don't have any dungeness right now.
