In November 2022, we disabled the :verified: emoji on mastodon.world, to avoid confusion for all the new users that came from Twitter.
Now that people have had time to get used to how the Fediverse works, we re-enabled the emoji.

But for new users: please remember there’s no such thing as official/verified accounts indicated by checkmarks… The only verification you have on Mastodon is that of the links to websites in your Bio. All other checkmarks/badges you see in usernames are just for fun.

@cpekruhn @designthinkingcomic It’s possible the image was deleted by the scanner, falsely detected as positive. I can check this later, but can’t restore the image unfortunately.

In order to fight CSAM (child pornography) material being uploaded to our instances (either directly, of via caching from other instances), we have deployed a tool that scans our S3 buckets (where we store the media).

We have tested it, and we do expect some ‘false positives’, eg. Images that aren’t CSAM but get removed anyway. It’s a very small percentage, and we think it’s worth it.

Currently it’s scanning the existing files and after that will keep real-time scanning.

It’s now being used for mastodon.world, lemmy.world, calckey.world, sharkey.world and photofed.world

Update: The images are working again!

We worked with Wasabi in getting the illegal content removed, and they re-instated our account.

We will work with them in getting better procedures for preventing this issue. Also we will get Premium support to get quicker responses in the future. (Donations are welcome :-), see https://lemmy.world/post/12531572)

So, while waiting for Wasabi to respond, we already have some lessons learnt:

  • Have Wasabi e-mails go to the team instead of just 1 admin
  • Get premium support for Wasabi to get issues like this resolved sooner
  • We need to agree on a better method for dealing with this kind of content, with Wasabi. And if they won’t cooperate, we’ll need to look into other options. (Just disabling our account without warning doesn’t work for us)

Status update: Our Wasabi account (where we store the images) has been disabled because they detected csam content. I am working with Wasabi on getting the account enabled again and deleting the illegal content.

This also impacts lemmy.world / sharkey.world / Calckey.world

FYI there is a spam wave going on, signing up accounts with 10 random character usernames, posting something in Japanese with a link to Discord, mentioning random users.
If you see these please report. They are created on many different instances.

They also tried creating 150 accounts on :mw: but we caught them in time.
