This... is a horrible idea. Vendors mark classes final for good reasons: removing that means you're exposing yourself to breakage when you update.

It is just crazy that when you test positive for COVID, an airline says "you'll still have to fly. if you want to change anything it'll be a voluntary change to your booking and you'll be charged accordingly"

mwop,
@mwop@phpc.social avatar

@Skoop ugh. Sorry to hear, Stefan. And it's asinine that these are the policies - hell, even last year, friends of mine went to Scotland, and tested positive before they were to fly to Iceland... and had to get permission from their consulate before resuming travel. Ridiculous that they've relaxed them so much in a year.

Live NHL games on ESPN+ are unwatchable with the same 4 commercials over and over and over.

How do people deal with this? it's maddening.

mwop,
@mwop@phpc.social avatar

@heiglandreas @Skoop @joepferguson @grmpyprogrammer Ironically, those "safety precautions" end up making the players feel invincible, leading to a greater incidence of injury, particularly head trauma.

Around two years ago, I decided to reduce from 2 monitors to 1; having a second monitor was distracting, and causing neck tension due to how I positioned them.

This week, I've had some tasks that could benefit from the second screen, so I hooked it up.

I kept one screen directly in front of me, and the other is off to one side, at an angle. This solved both issues; I only look at the 2nd screen when needed.

Better: I realized I can go into settings and... disable it when I'm not using it. 🤯

mwop,
@mwop@phpc.social avatar

@alessandrolai I've done this at times (e.g. when doing webinars or remote presentations). The issue I have is that my monitor stand is not quite high enough to fit my laptop under when the screen is open. It also means that I have a LOT less desk space (depth).

One monitor is generally enough; it keeps the distractions down, and encourages me to focus on one thing.

Which book are you thinking of the most?

Douglas Adams "Mostly Harmless"

Each and every morning when prepping the kids lunchbox

Not because of the awesome plot or some great search engine turning evil.

Because making Sandwiches indeed carries a certain satisfaction and I can understand and feel the perfecrionism.

mwop,

@heiglandreas The narrative around that has stuck with me since I first read it. Something profound in taking time and effort in perfecting the most mundane things, and the joy found in doing so.

What’s the oldest domain name that you personally own? Mine is littlehart.net, which I believe I registered sometime in 1998

mwop,
@mwop@phpc.social avatar

@grmpyprogrammer weierophinney.net, registered in 2000. Redirects to mwop.net currently, but I use the MX record for family email domain.

    @manchuck @heiglandreasTry having two words in your last name. And one with punctuation. And that combined, they're over 12 characters.

    I cannot tell you how many permutations of my name are out there because different systems allow different characters and character counts. And this is WITHOUT Unicode!

    What happened to OStatus.org? It looks like the domain lapsed and someone else is now squatting on it.

    Does anyone know where those specs live now? I’m trying to find the list of relations (i.e., “rel”) defined by OStatus.

    Current injury status — toe is stiff and sore, still looks mangled, couldn’t put on a shoe today when I ventured out for lunch at a local place.

    Ribs have gotten more sore as I have transitioned from sleeping in my recliner (I broke it 😩) to sleeping in a bed. I snore if I sleep on my back so I trained myself to sleep on my side. But I can’t sleep on my side :(

    Again, things fucking suck.

    mwop,
    @mwop@phpc.social avatar

    @grmpyprogrammer I had a similar situation with my shoulder - slept for a week or two in a recliner, moved to the bed but had to put pillows in place to prevent rolling onto my side, which lasted for another 6 weeks. Absolutely miserable.

    The good news: it's temporary. It's just likely hard to see that or feel it right now.

    💜

    mwop,
    @mwop@phpc.social avatar

    @grmpyprogrammer The fact I use a CPAP meant I was at least getting okay-ish sleep. But that inability to roll on either side... uggggghhhh is right.

    It was easy to get in a funk this summer. PT was the thing that got me through it, though, because every week, I could point to something I was doing that I'd not been able to do before, even if it was something as seemingly trivial as "I can button my pants and do my belt buckle myself!"

    You'll get through it. May not always be fun, tho.

    "Did you know Fight Club, The Matrix, and American Beauty all came out in 1999?"

    This is how the conversation this morning started.

    We had no idea how far the rabbit hole would go.

    Because - apparently - 1999 was a watershed moment for cinema.

    Just check off that to-do you’re never going to do. It’s a relief.

    mwop,
    @mwop@phpc.social avatar

    @rands I started doing that this year. The PKM I use allows me to mark them as cancelled, which means I can still find them, but they no longer show up in my backlog.

    Makes the weekly prioritization so much less daunting, as stuff doesn't keep surfacing and making me feel guilty.

    mwop,

    @preinheimer I said keychain... but it's a not really one. I have a "utility" key (box cutter, wrench, screw drivers, etc.), a USB stick, and my yubikey on it. I keep this with me at all times.

    Car/house keys I grab on my way out the door, and only carry them if I need them. :)
