For the past few days I’ve just felt exhausted every morning… besides my bike ride and short walk over the weekend I haven’t had any energy to got out and do anything. I did yard work Sunday and that exhausted me. Maybe I should see my doctor…

mzyw,
@mzyw@edumasto.org avatar

@rasterweb Yes, you should consult with a doc. I hope it's not serious and that you have more energy soon!

I have some good news to share. Monday I'm starting at the Philadelphia Airport as Director of IT Infrastructure and Operations. The Airport is another City department, and because this is all happening before my last official day with OIT, I can do this as a transfer and maintain my vacation/sick time as well as service credit towards pension.

I'd like to thank everyone who's reached out over the last couple of weeks to help me during this strange time of transition. It meant a lot to me.

Congratulations to @cplong who has been named provost and senior vice president at University of Oregon! https://around.uoregon.edu/content/chris-long-named-uo-provost-and-senior-vice-president

Chris was my favorite dean at MSU. He is thoughtful, fair, and honest. UO chose an amazing new provost!

I'm realizing this morning that one of the (very few) benefits of being unemployed is that there are no Mondays. This morning I had my yogurt/granola/m&ms concoction that I usually do on Saturdays. I'm going to go for a walk later this morning like I do on Sundays. I'm going to read and probably watch a movie later, which I usually do on Tuesdays when my spouse is with her knitting group.

Days have no meaning and time is a construct.

My forge is up and running!

The list of folks who want to learn a little about blacksmithing is growing at the same time as my to-do list of things I want to set up for the forge is stacking up.

But today I got out and hammered out a couple of tapers in 1/2 stock and tested out my mobile forge cart and anvil stand setup.

Now for more work holding options, hardy hole tools (they sit in the square hole on the anvil), and some twist wrenches. And learning how to set up my welder...

@davidseidl Very cool!

@lauren@mastodon.laurenweinstein.org avatar

OK, I think this is cool. Was just watching an old original early 60s "The Outer Limits" on , and noticed the opening shot was looking down on a building with a barely visible heliport in a wooded area. Since the series shot everything here in L.A., and I've located other exterior building shots from the series previously (and visited some over the years), I wanted to locate this one, which I'd never really paid attention to before despite uncountable past viewings (in the plot of the episode, it's a research facility in New Mexico).

Their other exteriors were almost always in the Hollywood Hills. So, I searched for heliports in that area. I quickly found a reference to fire engine company 108. Using Google Maps, it took about two minutes to confirm that this was indeed the location of that opening shot, and that it was almost entirely unchanged today, even down to the location of electrical utility poles.

You probably think this is silly, but I'm easily amused by stuff like this.

mzyw,
@mzyw@edumasto.org avatar

@lauren It's pretty cool that you figured that out!

I tore a finger nail at work today and had to trim it with a pair of scissors. Came out pretty good. I’m adding that to my list of post-apocalyptic skills.

The list now has one item on it.

I like metal 🤘but I've not found anything new I've liked for ages.

Any recommendations? I'm not too fussy about specific subgenres, as long as it's loud I'll give it a try. If I can sing along, even better.

It's "there's an article about it" official - I've been named to the EDUCAUSE Board.

That means that I'll be spending time over the next four years working with amazing folks from across higher education IT and other fields as we work to support EDUCAUSE and our community. It's a huge honor, and I'm excited to get to serve with some really amazing folks!

We had to say goodbye to our sweet Happy. She was the very best girl & we had so many adventures together. Happy hiked mountains in Colorado, camped with us in Texas, ran across California’s beaches & pranced through the Michigan snow.

She named herself Happy & loved every person she ever met. We have always felt extremely lucky to find her on Congress Ave & came to call her our Austin terrier since she was a little bit of every breed. We will miss her every day.

My reaction to the COVID booster was consistent with my previous experiences. 10am shot, felt not great by 5pm, extreme shivering for five hours at bed (helped some by two blankets), then three more hours of sweating. Got up, showered, slept four more hours. My arm is still sore, but that's the last of the effects.
