windows 11 is putting ads in the start menu

no, not like, the preinstalled apps that windows 10 and 11 already have. literally just, advertisements

may i remind you that the expected, official way to obtain a legitimate official windows license is via an oem or paying microsoft $140 directly

i know you can buy shady keys online or pirate it trivially, but the EXPECTED METHOD of activating windows is either you or the oem pay microsoft for a license

despite that, ads. wow this is just cable tv!

fedi please either convince me to replace my Windows 11 SSD with Nobara Linux entirely or convince me to stay on Windows at all

@oracle why nobara and not ultramarine?

nano,
@nano@fedi.nano.lgbt avatar

@oracle well suit yourself i guess

nano,
@nano@fedi.nano.lgbt avatar

@oracle the whole point of ultramarine is ease of use, being perfectly set up out of the box with media codecs and nvidia drivers, and not requiring terminal usage. theyre also working on big stuff like a whole new installer and chromebook, arm, and mac support

@SuperDicq tbf i think theyre slowly phasing out the "k" motif, most modern apps don't have a k in the name (like elisa, dolphin, spectacle, etc). similar to how gnome tells people to not use the "g" prefix anymore

nano,
@nano@fedi.nano.lgbt avatar

@SuperDicq its nostalgic but i also think its getting really old tbh. it really limits how creative you can get with the name. i mean some of them really use the k well, like falkon and ark, but some are just shoved in there like kwrite and its kind of ugly

nano,
@nano@fedi.nano.lgbt avatar

@SuperDicq kate is supposed to be a development environment and kwrite is supposed to be graphical nano, i think

Discord on my old Mac just updated itself to a version my computer can't run 🙃

nano,
@nano@fedi.nano.lgbt avatar

@Tijn this sucks and you should probably look into using the website or a third party client, but you can also upgrade to catalina with dosdude1's patcher: http://dosdude1.com/catalina/

nano,
@nano@fedi.nano.lgbt avatar

@Tijn you can also go beyond catalina with opencore legacy patcher, but ymmv depending on what mac you have (iirc 2012 and higher have the best results)

so you know how nvidia has their own variable refresh rate technology called g-sync? well the modern industry standard for variable refresh rate on computer monitors (freesync/hdmi vrr/vesa adaptive-sync) is really great and it’s royalty free and works really well and is cheap to implement even on $200 monitors. obviously nvidia didn’t like this because they want their proprietary vrr solution to be the Number 1, and they didn’t want amd to be able to put all the freesync branding on the majority of monitors

so what did nvidia do? they started supporting freesync on their graphics cards, but instead of saying that geforce cards can support freesync (because that would give amd way too much credit!), they called it something stupid like “g-sync compatible”, which makes people think that the royalty free industry standard for vrr is bad and that the best way to get good variable refresh rate is by putting a REAL g-sync module in the back of the monitor. which is, yknow, a $300 proprietary fpga board from nvidia that needs to be actively cooled and casually sucks back 15 to 25w when the monitor is powered off and only works with select geforce cards

i’ve seen enough people say a monitor is “only g-sync compatible“ like it’s a bad thing to get pissed off by this. a g-sync module is worse in every way to the standard modern vrr implementation

i fucking hate nvidia
