how to unfuck fedora:

for some reason the fedora project chooses to edge perfection and have a few things that you have to manually do once you install. this shouldnt take more than 10 minutes and you only have to do it once, but its annoying either way

  1. make sure you’re completely up to date by checking gnome software or kde discover for updates
  2. dont use an nvidia gpu (but if you do, open gnome software or kde discover and search for “nvidia linux graphics driver”. install it and reboot)
  3. go to https://rpmfusion.org/Configuration and get the .rpm file for your version of fedora. open the downloaded rpm file to install it
  4. run sudo dnf install @multimedia @sound-and-video ffmpeg-libs gstreamer1-plugins-{bad-*,good-*,base} gstreamer1-plugin-openh264 gstreamer1-libav lame* on the command line
  5. open gnome software or kde discover, open settings, and remove “fedora flatpaks”
  6. download https://dl.flathub.org/repo/flathub.flatpakrepo and open it (if you’re on kde, set “flathub” to the default in kde discover settings)

all of this stuff should really really just be done for you, but that should be enough

again i reiterate how frustrating it is that this stuff isnt done by default. no user should have to install fucking media codecs, or switch out their flatpak repository. its kind of a joke >:/

ubuntu’s downfall is such a sad story. over a decade ago we HAD a flagship distro that anyone, advanced or novice, could point to and say “use that one”. but we lost it, and we no longer have a definitive linux distro that anyone can use without at least SOME hassle. even the easiest and most user-friendly distros have SOME caveat. for a long time, ubuntu had basically none, aside from the normal linux problems of the era (like sound, graphics, and wifi being problematic)

canonical had, and still does have, the resources to make a genuinely user-friendly and modern linux desktop distro. but theyre way too focused on shoehorning snap into everything, even the most critical system-level components, because they want a monopoly on software distribution on linux

to give you an idea on how absolutely insane canonical is, for the uninitiated. cups is the printer system that almost all unix systems use. cups does not work with snap apps! so what did canonical do to solve this? well, they ported cups to snap. problem solved right? well, no, not really, because the gnome and kde printer settings didnt work with their new cups snap. easy to solve for vanilla ubuntu, since canonical already has a customised version of gnome, but its not so easy to solve for flavours like kubuntu or xubuntu. so what did they do? they hard forked gnome settings and ripped out everything that wasnt the printer settings, and then forced every flavour maintainer to include it... just so they could have a cups snap. this is the kind of shit canonical is willing to do to make snap viable. what a horrible horrible mess
