@nanode@calckey.consummatetinkerer.net

Currently tinkering with stuff on the sunny South Coast of the UK.

By day I am one of those people that 'does something with computers', usually around data visualisation.

By night I'm usually wandering around #NoMansSky or #ElderScrollsOnline building stupid stuff in both.

#EFF and #ORG supporter.

Been using #PGP since 2000 and no-one has ever mailed me.

This profile is from a federated server and may be incomplete. Browse more on the original instance.

Right, so you're seeing this and wondering what happened and why are you seeing a new account.

I bricked my fedi.maikel.dev instance of Calckey trying to migrate to Firefish using the obsolete and broken ubuntu.sh script on their repo.

After getting annoyed, I went to sleep, woke up today and tried again but with a fresh install. The script is still pretty much broken even for that so I'm taking charge of my online presence by forking Firefish and ensuring this never happens again, there's plenty in the repo I had already changed on my instance like what comes out when I use a search box.

I've lost ALL of my social graph so lots of people won't even figure out where the F did I go unless you boost this and might think I died 😇. So please, for their sake, do boost: I was before @maikel now I am here in @maikel

Thanks you all for helping.

EDIT: Note that I'm adding some changes to the code so expect my instance today to fall a few times before it runs stable.

nanode,

@maikel @maikel

haha, I'm in the process of borking mine.

Currently:

firefish 1 : me 0

I've already had to roll back to Calckey 13.1 so I can bungle it again.

nanode,

@maikel @maikel

FYI you can chose a Branch to roll back to in the Ubuntu script:

if [ $method != "docker_hub" ]; then
        echo "Repository url where you want to install:"
        read -r -p "> " -e -i "https://codeberg.org/firefish/firefish.git" repository;
        echo "The name of a new directory to clone:"
        read -r -p "> " -e -i "calckey" calckey_directory;
        echo "Branch or Tag (main or beta)"
        read -r -p "> " -e -i "v13.1.4" branch;

nanode,

@maikel

I'm currently wondering what will happen if I put Calckey on one user, one db, one port and one sub-domain.

Then firefish on a completely different set.

Then migrate ?

It's only time I'm wasting, right ?

😆

nanode,

@maikel

It's the migrating bit I'm unsure of.

There was a thing a while ago where I had to mgrate in and out of Calckey to change username.

nanode,

@u0421793 @maikel

Oh my.

😆

nanode,

@u0421793 @maikel

I'm getting close to 'apt purging' the lot and starting again.

I was orgainised this time, I kept notes and everything.

😃

nanode,

@maikel @u0421793

That bit always gets me.

😆

nanode,

@u0421793 @maikel

I WILL NOT BE BEATEN !

nanode,

@u0421793 @maikel

K, so I purged Calckey and installed on port 2000, db name calkey blah blah.

Started installing firefish, seperate domain, port, user, db, etc...

No joy, there is a weird nginx.conf cache conflict.

I'm going to try and update / migrate now that I know I can get back to this point ok.

And if that fails again, tomorrow, jump my followers to calckey.social, install a clean firefish and jump back.

Happy Days!

nanode,

@maikel @u0421793

lool, good point.

I'll jump to the nice and stable Masto.

Never thought of that.

🤔

nanode,

@u0421793 @maikel

I'm giving up for the night too.

It was building but then it wasn't.

🤷

I think I'll wait for a script to follow.

😆

nanode, to random

I wrote a few scripts to backup and restore my database.

Why ?

Because I'm paranoid.

Because I tinker with stuff until it breaks.

Because I'm curious.

Any Calckey folks having trouble viewing your own profile?

⬇️
Screen grab of calckey pwa on Android, attempting to view my profile. Black screen. Doest populate. Refreshed. Cleared browser history. Logged out and back on. Disconnected Wi-Fi and reconnected. Sat and waited. Ate a sandwich. Made coffee. Nothing seems to fix? 🥺🤔

nanode,
nanode,

@maikel @riversidebryan @kainoa

I think it was Codeberg being unavailable related.

I dunno tho tbh.

🤷

nanode,

@maikel @riversidebryan

Yeah, honestly, I'm not entirely sure why a repo would have an effect on an installation.

It looks as if there are calls back to Codeberg for the Patron badges or something.

🤷

I'm self hosting, so, no Patrons, so "it works on my machine".

😆

nanode,

@maikel @riversidebryan

Oh, well, I was assuming that because I have no Patrons I never got to see the failure, or that it failed gracefully.

But then assumptions are the mother of all fuckups ?

It does seem very odd that an unrelated instance (like ours) would make a Codeberg call though.

Surely the Patron info should be at the instance level?

i.e. if my instance had Patrons the info would be called from my sever.

Or am I missing something obvious?

nanode, to mastodon

OK, so I took the leap and spun up my own instance.

I was deliberating whether to go with or .

Calckey won.

Why?

Because the Mastodon install was "follow these quick 45 steps in a Terminal".

Which breaks at step 44.
(I am not interested in advice as to how to resolve this, thanks.)

Calckey was "run this one script and answer a couple of questions"

Right now, it's just me, all on my lonesome.

I might open it later but at the moment I'm enjoying my own company.

I would appreciate boost to help with federation tho.

Have a great day everyone.

nanode,

@Uraael

Well this is on a Raspi4 with 3GB.

Ubuntu Server 22.04

It all seems OK right now, the CPU spikes occasionally but it's not running hot (never gets above 40-ish degrees).

Importing my followers made the job queue go a bit crackers but that has settled down now.

nanode,

@Uraael

Yep, I already had the server set up and hosting a few WordPress sites so it was a no-brainer to add a Calckey sub-domain.

😆

nanode,

@emurphy42

Well there are significant UI differences between the two.

imo Calckey is a lot prettier than Masto.

It also has more toys, like a Drive to store files, Chats between accounts, Channels and User Pages (and more stuff that I forget).

At the end of the day tho, we are all here using a Fediverse, and tbh I'm pretty software agnostic.

(The name may be changing soon anyway 😆)

nanode,

@menelion @MariaTheMartian

oooh, lots of toys, like:

Antennas that tell you when something you follow has been posted.

Markup for funky posts

MFM for funky graphic posts

Chat between accounts

User pages

Generally, a better UI, all round prettier and a lot more customisable.

nanode,

@lori

I noticed the CPU going a bit crackers too.

It seems to have settled down after federation has quietened.

And yeah, I'm slowly moving my code over to Codeberg.
