I'm going to be doing a LIVE webinar with Matthias Pfefferle on Weds 24th April at 3pm (UK time). It's all about WordPress and the Fediverse (think Mastodon) and how to turn your website into a member of this growing social network. It'll be at wpbuilds.com/live.
Okay so I'm never going to do anything other than write single sentence prompts and get entire songs back in seconds. My life is now literally over. I shall do nothing expect this, ever again! Listen to "Double U Pee Builds"! "Fulfilling your dreams!" https://suno.com/song/da623b57-4a49-4af3-989f-86b3892fc827
For years, WP Builds header has said "A WordPress podcast packed full of things that you either don’t want to know or are clever enough to work out that we just made up!" I wonder if I should alter that, and if you could help me with it? What is WP Builds? Gosh, that's heavy!
Okay, so this is a bit weird, but someone asked me the other day how I would encapsulate the WordPress community in one word. I came up with "kind". What would you say is the one word to sum up the community, not the software?
So, I'm trying this out... Mastodon only for now! I want to be a part of a "WP Builds" community, but all-the-platforms seem to put themselves first... ads, and ways to monetise. I recently found Discord, and set up a WP Builds server. I'm no expert, and WILL screw things up, but if you're into WordPress and want to try this out with me, here's a link to join our Discord: https://discord.gg/fCrfrvgpv6 I hope that this works!!!! Please let me know if it does not!?!? 😀
Just a thoought... You don't need the Internet-of-things or AI in your fridge, or microwave, or pizza oven, or car etc. Anyone who says that you do is likely not worthy of your business. The more we connect these things, the more likely they sre to break in ways that you and I cannot fix!
@LoneLocust Yeah, that's both compelling and interesting. Mmm... gonna have to dwell on that, but I'm really not that interested in the companies profitting from the data that I'd have to surrender.
@nathan again, just thinking “in an ideal scenario” I don’t see much need for PPI outflow to do this. Things like usage patterns can be reasonably anonymous.
Obviously, the corporate overlords don’t want it to be, and a clever data monkey can reverse engineer a lot of info from usage patterns.
I wonder what you think. Are we capable of having a productive discourse across the internet? There's so many local / regional / national / political differences. Are we capable of ignoring / overcoming those boundaries? Or does the internet exacerbate them? I'm finding it hard to encompass my dilemma, but it's really... are people from where I live able to meaningfully talk about all-the-things with people from all-the-other-places?
@nathan The internet brings us closer together and allows us to experience those things. For some people this is a shock - not everyone is like me‽ And it causes retreat & defensiveness. For others it causes curiosity, intrigue & joy.
There is a developmental theory called Spiral Dynamics which suggests individuals and societies progress through stages, that latter of which are more embracing of other cultures & ideas.
@nathan HOWEVER... Spiral Dynamics is similar to other models of cultural development like Values Modes (http://www.cultdyn.co.uk/valuesmodes3.html), and it also kinda fits with Maslow’s Hierarchy of needs.
I find this stuff FASCINATING (can you tell?) and I think it's really important to understand that different people see the world in such varied ways.
Of course, the fact that you are asking this question puts you in the later stages where you are asking the meta-questions!!

After ruminating on this for quite a while... in terms of the climate and how it's affected by our addition to electricity. Right now you have 2 choices... use less or stop using as much. Everything else is folly. I say this from a laptop uploading photos of my family to the cloud. The dilemma / addition is real!
