I podcast over at WP Builds, WP Tavern. I have too much to say, and more than enough mics to say in into!

I'm going to be doing a LIVE webinar with Matthias Pfefferle on Weds 24th April at 3pm (UK time). It's all about WordPress and the Fediverse (think Mastodon) and how to turn your website into a member of this growing social network. It'll be at wpbuilds.com/live.

Okay so I'm never going to do anything other than write single sentence prompts and get entire songs back in seconds. My life is now literally over. I shall do nothing expect this, ever again! Listen to "Double U Pee Builds"! "Fulfilling your dreams!"

For years, WP Builds header has said "A WordPress podcast packed full of things that you either don’t want to know or are clever enough to work out that we just made up!" I wonder if I should alter that, and if you could help me with it? What is WP Builds? Gosh, that's heavy!

Okay, so this is a bit weird, but someone asked me the other day how I would encapsulate the WordPress community in one word. I came up with "kind". What would you say is the one word to sum up the community, not the software?

CSS has gotten so, so good over the last few years. So many things that were really difficult to do are now trivial.

So, I'm trying this out... Mastodon only for now! I want to be a part of a "WP Builds" community, but all-the-platforms seem to put themselves first... ads, and ways to monetise. I recently found Discord, and set up a WP Builds server. I'm no expert, and WILL screw things up, but if you're into WordPress and want to try this out with me, here's a link to join our Discord: https://discord.gg/fCrfrvgpv6 I hope that this works!!!! Please let me know if it does not!?!? 😀

You know how designers get no-code solutions?

Are there any no-design solutions for coders to use?

nathan,
@nathan@wpbuilds.social avatar

@ross I think that online design needs code, but online code does not need design. QED, coders win!!!! 😜

nathan,
@nathan@wpbuilds.social avatar

@ross What I was meaning is that your code does not need to look wonderful! So long as you can read the text, you're good!

nathan,
@nathan@wpbuilds.social avatar

@ross Okay, let me try again, nothing whatsoever needs to look good. I'm living by this motto, and it's working out fine!!!!

nathan,
@nathan@wpbuilds.social avatar

@ross Okay, so the 2nd, or maybe 3rd law of thermodynamics means that it's all going to look pretty ugly in the end, so I'm ending with that!!!!

Here's the thing.

I have spent 4 years working in and on crypto.

When I criticise it, I know what I'm talking about.

I was drawn in by the idea of a new financial system that didn't rely on traditional banks. I was excited by the idea of rebuilding digital ownership in a post-streaming world.

In the end, I came to realise my idealism had blinded me. The philosophy was largely false.

And outweighed by the scams, thefts, fraud and grift.

nathan,
@nathan@wpbuilds.social avatar

@Daojoan I'm curious, in what way were they seeing your work as an asset? I'm ignorant, so I'm genuinely curious. What were they hoping to gain from your work, and how were they hoping to gain it?

Meetup.com has been acquired by Bending Spoons, the company that owns Evernote.

@shawnhooper I'm not too sure that this will turn out in the way that we all (as WordPress users) hope. I hope that I'm wrong about that.

Just a thoought... You don't need the Internet-of-things or AI in your fridge, or microwave, or pizza oven, or car etc. Anyone who says that you do is likely not worthy of your business. The more we connect these things, the more likely they sre to break in ways that you and I cannot fix!

nathan,
@nathan@wpbuilds.social avatar

@LoneLocust Yeah, that's both compelling and interesting. Mmm... gonna have to dwell on that, but I'm really not that interested in the companies profitting from the data that I'd have to surrender.

I wonder what you think. Are we capable of having a productive discourse across the internet? There's so many local / regional / national / political differences. Are we capable of ignoring / overcoming those boundaries? Or does the internet exacerbate them? I'm finding it hard to encompass my dilemma, but it's really... are people from where I live able to meaningfully talk about all-the-things with people from all-the-other-places?

Do any of you knowledgeable people have a favourite WordPress theme that is:

  1. Clean and crisp in appearance.
  2. Has a white background with black text as the default.
  3. Has a sidebar for widgets.
  4. Is still updated and supported.

Edit: Suggestions so far:
Bitácora https://wordpress.com/theme/bitacora

Kadence https://www.kadencewp.com

Libra 2 https://wordpress.com/theme/libre-2

OK. This is for real. This needs to be done.

I gave ChatGPT a prompt and then copied and pasted all the recent school emails, from both schools, into it. And then asked it to summarise what I needed to know about this week and it's frickin' amazing (no personal data was sent as a part of this experiment):

    opinion: it should be forbidden to use the word 'buy' for anything that is a time-limited license.

    If your business model is paying every month/year, the word to use is 'rent'

    You're not buying a domain and you're not buying a software license (that has to be renewed every x time)

    nathan,
    @nathan@wpbuilds.social avatar

    @peturdainn I'm not too sure that I agree. You buy a car or house until you sell it. You buy food and then immediately do all that you can to remove it from the face of the earth. The word buy, in my head, is when you separate me from my money for something, anything. I buy a domain for a year. I see where you're going, but I suspect that buttons labelled 'rent now' would convert at closer to 0%!

    nathan,
    @nathan@wpbuilds.social avatar

    @peturdainn yes. I see what you mean. It's an odd quirk of the language.

    I love how most media use statements like this. It must annoy Musk to no end that the old name will never go away.
